The first thing I remembered was the water.

Cold.

Dark.

Endless.

It pressed against my body as though the ocean wanted to drag me into its depths and keep me there forever.

I tried to scream.

Nothing came out.

My lungs burned.

My fingers searched desperately through the darkness for something—anything—to hold on to.

Then I remembered Adrian.

His hand.

His voice.

His eyes looking at me through the smoke.

If we get out of here, I’m going to tell you everything.

I reached toward the surface.

But the darkness pulled me down.

Then someone grabbed my wrist.

A strong hand.

A man’s voice whispered beside me.

“Don’t die yet, Mrs. Kingsley.”

My eyes flew open.

I gasped.

Air rushed into my lungs so violently that I began coughing.

Someone immediately pressed a mask over my face.

“Easy.”

I tried to sit up.

Pain exploded through my head.

I cried out and fell back against the pillow.

“Where am I?”

My voice sounded broken.

A man stepped into view.

He was in his late forties, wearing a dark shirt beneath a medical coat. His expression was calm, but his eyes watched me carefully.

“You’re safe.”

“Where is Adrian?”

The man’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“Where is my husband?”

“You need to rest.”

“Where is he?”

I tried to pull the oxygen mask away.

The doctor stopped me.

“You nearly drowned. You have a serious head injury and several broken ribs. If you keep moving like this, you’ll make things worse.”

“I don’t care.”

My voice cracked.

“My husband was on the yacht.”

The doctor exchanged a look with the man standing behind him.

My heart began pounding.

“What happened to Adrian?”

Neither answered.

I pushed myself upright again.

Pain shot through my side.

“Tell me!”

The doctor finally spoke.

“The yacht sank.”

My stomach dropped.

“And Adrian?”

Silence.

That silence was worse than any answer.

I stared at him.

“Is he alive?”

“We don’t know.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You’re lying.”

“We searched the area.”

“No.”

“Mrs. Kingsley—”

“No!”

Tears flooded my eyes.

“I saw him.”

My breathing became uneven.

“He was there. He was holding my hand.”

The memory returned with horrifying clarity.

Adrian standing across the fallen beam.

Blood running down his face.

Fire surrounding him.

His voice begging me to leave.

Aurora, please.

I covered my mouth.

“He was still there when I fell.”

The doctor looked away.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

The man in the dark shirt finally spoke.

“Everyone believes you’re dead.”

I stared at him.

The room became completely silent.

“What?”

“The official search ended without finding your body.”

My heart stopped.

“They held your funeral three days ago.”

For several seconds, I couldn’t understand the words.

Then I laughed.

A small, broken sound.

“My funeral?”

The man nodded.

“Your husband buried an empty coffin.”

I stared at him.

“No.”

“He believes you’re dead.”

My hands began trembling.

Adrian.

I pictured him standing beside that coffin.

I pictured his face.

The photograph of us.

The wedding ring.

The way he had looked at me before the explosion.

Something inside my chest cracked.

“He wouldn’t…”

I whispered.

“He wouldn’t believe that.”

The doctor remained silent.

I looked toward the window.

Rain streaked the glass.

The world outside continued moving as though nothing had happened.

People were going to work.

Cars were moving through streets.

Children were probably going to school.

And somewhere in that world, my husband believed I was lying beneath the sea.

I closed my eyes.

A tear slipped down my cheek.

“He thinks I’m dead.”

“Yes.”

I swallowed.

“Does he know who did this?”

The man in the dark shirt didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Gabriel.”

My entire body went cold.

“Gabriel…”

“Gabriel Vale.”

The name from my letter.

The name I had written down for Adrian.

The name I never got the chance to explain.

“You.”

Gabriel nodded.

“I pulled you from the water.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“That is a complicated question.”

“I don’t care how complicated it is.”

My voice became sharper.

“Why did you save me?”

Gabriel looked at me for a long moment.

“Because your father once saved my life.”

My breath caught.

“My father?”

He nodded.

“Edward Ashford.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“You knew my father?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Gabriel pulled a chair closer and sat down.

“Your father was investigating something five years ago.”

“What?”

“A financial network.”

My heartbeat quickened.

“The same thing I discovered before the explosion?”

His eyes narrowed.

“You found the files.”

It wasn’t a question.

I slowly nodded.

Gabriel’s expression darkened.

“Then they were watching you.”

“Who?”

“People who have spent years making sure your father’s investigation never reaches the public.”

I remembered the strange photographs.

The person following me.

Someone entering my office.

The unexplained transactions.

The anonymous messages.

And then Adrian.

The divorce papers.

His accusations.

The photographs of me with Lucas.

Everything suddenly felt connected.

I looked at Gabriel.

“Was Adrian involved?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation hurt.

“Tell me.”

“I don’t know.”

“You saved me.”

“Yes.”

“Then you must know something.”

“I know someone wanted everyone on that yacht dead.”

“Everyone?”

Gabriel nodded.

“The explosion wasn’t meant only for you.”

My blood ran cold.

“Then who was the target?”

“That’s what I’m trying to discover.”

I looked down at my hands.

They were still trembling.

Then something strange happened.

A wave of nausea hit me.

I covered my mouth.

Gabriel stood immediately.

“Doctor.”

“I’ll handle it.”

The doctor approached me.

“When did you last eat?”

“I don’t know.”

“Have you been feeling sick recently?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

The nausea came again.

I rushed toward the small basin beside the bed.

The doctor followed.

After several minutes, I leaned weakly against the wall.

He watched me carefully.

“Mrs. Kingsley…”

“What?”

“I need to run some tests.”

“Why?”

“Your symptoms.”

I frowned.

“What symptoms?”

“Nausea. Dizziness. Fainting.”

“I almost drowned.”

“Yes.”

He hesitated.

“But there’s another possibility.”

My stomach tightened.

“What possibility?”

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he asked quietly,

“When was your last menstrual period?”

I stared at him.

The question seemed completely unrelated.

“I…”

My mind went blank.

Then I remembered.

The date.

The missed period.

The exhaustion I’d blamed on stress.

The nausea I’d dismissed.

My hand instinctively moved toward my stomach.

“No.”

The doctor looked at me.

“Is there a chance you’re pregnant?”

I couldn’t speak.

Pregnant.

The word echoed inside my head.

Pregnant.

I looked at Gabriel.

Then at the doctor.

“Test me.”

Twenty minutes later, the doctor returned with the results.

He closed the door behind him.

Gabriel was no longer in the room.

The doctor held a small medical file.

His expression was different now.

Softer.

“Mrs. Kingsley…”

I gripped the bedsheet.

“Tell me.”

“You’re pregnant.”

Everything stopped.

I stared at him.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“How far?”

“Approximately seven weeks.”

Seven weeks.

I closed my eyes.

Seven weeks.

That meant the baby had been conceived before everything between Adrian and me had fallen apart.

Before the divorce papers.

Before the accusations.

Before the Black Swan.

A sob escaped my throat.

I placed both hands over my stomach.

There was nothing to feel yet.

No movement.

No tiny kick.

Nothing that proved there was truly a life growing inside me.

But I knew.

My child.

Adrian’s child.

A child neither of us knew existed.

Tears rolled down my cheeks.

For a moment, happiness pushed through the fear.

I imagined Adrian’s face if I told him.

His eyes widening.

His hands touching my stomach.

The way he might smile.

Then reality returned.

Someone had tried to kill us.

They had planted explosives on his yacht.

They had erased the security footage.

They had buried me without a body.

And now I was carrying Adrian Kingsley’s child.

If the people behind the attack discovered I had survived…

They would come for the baby.

My hands tightened around my stomach.

“No one can know.”

The doctor frowned.

“Mrs. Kingsley—”

“No one.”

“You need proper medical care.”

“I’ll receive it.”

“You should inform the child’s father.”

I looked away.

“The child’s father believes I’m dead.”

The doctor was silent.

I wiped my tears.

“And if he knows I’m alive, whoever did this will know too.”

Gabriel entered the room.

He had clearly heard enough.

“You’re right.”

I looked at him.

“You agree?”

“If the people behind the explosion have access to Kingsley International, returning to Adrian immediately could expose you.”

I stared at him.

“But he’s my husband.”

“Exactly.”

His words were painfully calm.

“Which makes you his greatest vulnerability.”

I lowered my eyes.

Adrian had already lost me once tonight.

I couldn’t let him lose his child too.

“Can you help me disappear?”

Gabriel studied me.

“You’re asking me to erase Aurora Kingsley.”

“Yes.”

“Your husband will search for you.”

“He’ll stop eventually.”

“You don’t know Adrian very well.”

A bitter smile touched my lips.

“I know him better than anyone.”

I remembered the man who had once held me through thunderstorms.

The man who had promised never to let pride destroy us.

The man who had handed me divorce papers because he believed lies about me.

And yet, beneath all that anger, I knew one truth.

Adrian loved me.

That was exactly why I had to stay away.

If he found me, he would come looking for answers.

And whoever wanted me dead would know where to find us.

I looked at Gabriel.

“What happens now?”

“You disappear.”

“Where?”

“Somewhere no one will think to look.”

I glanced down at my stomach.

“Then I’ll disappear.”

My voice trembled.

“But not as a victim.”

Gabriel raised an eyebrow.

“What do you mean?”

I looked toward the rain-covered window.

“My name is Aurora Kingsley.”

I touched my stomach.

“This child is Adrian Kingsley’s son.”

Then I looked back at Gabriel.

“But from today…”

I took a slow breath.

“…Aurora Kingsley is dead.”

Three days later, newspapers across Silverhaven printed the same photograph.

Aurora Kingsley.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Dead.

Adrian stood alone in his study, staring at the photograph.

His wedding ring was still on his finger.

He touched it unconsciously.

He didn’t know that miles away, the woman he believed he had buried was sitting in the back of a black car.

A blanket covered her shoulders.

One hand rested protectively over her stomach.

Gabriel sat in the driver’s seat.

“Are you ready?”

Aurora looked through the window at the city disappearing behind them.

Her old life.

Her old name.

Her husband.

Everything she had loved.

She swallowed the pain.

“Yes.”

Gabriel handed her a passport.

She opened it.

The photograph was hers.

But the name wasn’t.

Evelyn Stone.

Aurora stared at it for several seconds.

Then she closed the passport.

Behind her, Silverhaven disappeared into the distance.

Ahead was a life she knew nothing about.

A life where she would become someone else.

A life where her son would grow up without knowing his father.

A life built on a lie.

She placed her hand over her stomach again.

“I’ll protect you,” she whispered.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Even if I have to make your father hate me.”

She looked back one final time.

The city was already fading into darkness.

And somewhere inside it, Adrian Kingsley was mourning a dead wife.

He had no idea that the woman he was grieving was alive.

He had no idea that his heir was growing inside her.

And he certainly didn’t know that one day, Aurora would return.

Not as the broken wife who had left his mansion carrying divorce papers.

But as the woman who had built an empire from the ashes of her old life.

A woman who would make him regret every lie he had ever believed.

A woman he would have to fall in love with all over again.
