CHAPTER ONE
ELOWEN VALE
I stared at the mirror with wonder. I almost did not recognize the person I was seeing in my reflection. Thirty minutes of sitting as still as I could while Arden dusted colors and powders over my face had resulted in me looking better than I ever had.
I looked at the waves in my hair. They were more defined than they would be on a normal day and it was thanks to Melrose and Arden's curling wand.
I took a deep breath and raised my hands to my cheeks. I wanted to see if the blush would come off on my fingers, if my freckles would no longer be hidden.
I caught sight of the paint under my nails. I drew my hand away from my face and turned on the faucet. I vigorously washed the paint away.
âLowen, you need to hurry,â Melrose called from outside the bathroom.
âI'm coming,â I responded and dried my hands off on my dress before I realized what I was doing.
I stopped myself halfway through. It was a mini brown bodycon dress and the moisture from my hands was printed on it. I bit my lip. Arden and Melrose were going to complain. That was okay. They hadn't listened when I complained about how short the dress was.
I had done everything they wanted asides wear heels. I had only worn those once and I had ended up with a sprained ankle in front of Mom and Dad's guests. They had not been pleased.
I stepped out into the hallway. Arden and Melrose were at the end of the hallway taking selfies. They were going to their Instagrams. I cleared my throat to quietly announce my presence. They both turned to look at me. Melrose nodded with quiet approval. Something shifted in my belly.
Arden crossed her arms and I had to physically stop myself from squirming under their scrutiny. âYou sure you don't want the heels?â Arden asked.
âYeah,â I muttered.
She shrugged and headed down the stairs. âWe leave in two minutes. We can't be late,â she announced over her shoulder.
I took the message and hurried into my room. I grabbed the smallest purse I could find. I forced my phone and some cash into it.
I made my way out of my room, down the hallway and down the stairs. The hem of the dress rose further and further up my thighs till it was sitting right below my butt. I hated discomfort. I was subjected to it all the time, but that did not change how much I hated it. The dress was going to keep me uncomfortable the whole party, if I managed to stay through.
I followed Melrose out of the house, then ran back inside to grab a bottle of water. I was thirsty.
Arden was still outside the SUV. She shook her head with disapproval as I approached the car.
âI'm thirsty.â
âYou're supposed to save that thirst for the drinks,â she rolled her eyes.
âWe are not old enough to drink,â I was stunned and confused. I knew that kids our age drank, but I didn't think she was one of them.
âGet in. You're so annoying,â she said through clenched teeth.
I climbed into the car. Arden went round to the other side. It was either I had pissed her off with the little I had said, or she just didn't want to sit away from Melrose.
I had a feeling it was both. I leaned back in my seat and pulled my phone out of my purse. There was nothing else for me to do.
I couldn't get my mind off the fact that Arden and Melrose planned to drink.
It was a party to celebrate the last day of highschool. I was going to have to watch out for them. If anything went wrong, my parents and Melrose's parents would blame me.
The SUV started moving and I plugged in my earphones to continue my tutorial video, only pausing it once when Arden and Melrose included me in their selfie.
I didn't notice that the SUV had stopped until Melrose nudged me. I looked up from my phone. We were parked in front of a grand hotel.
âThis is going to be so much fun,â Melrose said into Arden's camera and they both squealed.
I could see why they were best friends. They matched each other in so many ways.
We headed through the entrance and to the hotel lobby. I was not sure how a bunch of highschool-ers were having a party at a hotel this big and it was allowed. They were going to be drinking, for God's sake.
My nerves were on fire. I could not pay attention to whatever Arden and Melrose were saying. I only followed them, keeping my fingers closed around my purse. We walked into the elevator and it was just three of us.
âYou okay?â Melrose asked. Arden looked at me with an expression I could not read.
âShe doesn't look like it.â
âI'm fine,â I squared my shoulders.
âAre you?â Arden leaned forward and teased. I took two steps backwards to get her out of my space. âYes.â I curtly responded.
âSo⌠what are your plans for tonight?â Melrose leaned against the elevator wall and popped a sucker in her mouth. âThe partyâŚ?â What was she talking about?
Arden smirked. âWell, who are you gonna kiss? Make out with?â Melrose prodded. Her lips kicked up at the corners and discomfort sat heavy at the base of my stomach.
âNo one. I'm here for the party,â I looked away from her.
I had not associated myself with anyone from my grade. They were all different from me, and it was even worse that I was a year older than Arden and I was in the same grade as her.
âIt's part of the party though,â Melrose said as the elevator stopped and the doors slid open. Arden scoffed as we stepped out into the hallway. âShe's not doing any of that, Mel. Leave her alone,â she said. Not in a nice way; the kind of way that made me feel like a complete weirdo.
Melrose chuckled and shrugged. âOkay,â she looked round the hallway. It was wide, but there were only three doors.
They headed towards the door at the center of the hallway like they had been there a hundred times, probably because they had.
They both dramatically put their hands on the door handle and smiled at each other as they opened it. Bass music, heat and flashes of different colors of light exploded from the room as soon as they opened it. I could not help the sinking feeling that consumed my guts as I walked in after them and shut the door behind me.

An hour later, Melrose had convinced me to take a glass of alcohol, and Arden had made me have an awkward dance with a friend of hers, Dane. His father owned the hotel. I was a little tipsy, overstimulated and horribly out of place. I needed to leave the suite.
I headed over to Arden. She was chatting with Melrose and two other guys who were smoking pot.
âI need to leave,â I yelled over the loud music.
Arden frowned with irritation. âNo, you don't.â
âYes, I do,â I frowned.
Melrose groaned for a second and then smiled suddenly, like something clicked in her brain.
âRemember how there were three doors in the hallway?â She asked and I nodded. Arden looked at her warily.
âGo to the one on the right. It's another of Dane's private suites. You can wait for us there,â she said.
I sighed. I could leave the party without them, but my parents would not like that. I turned around to leave, and Melrose grasped my shoulder with her dainty hands.
âDane's gonna be there too. This could be your chance to get some action,â she giggled. I shuddered, feeling heat burn through my face.
âI'll pass,â I shook my head and pushed my way through the crowd till I made it to the door.
The hallway was a breath of fresh air. Literally and figuratively.
I made my way to the door on the right side of the one I had just come from. I opened it, hoping that I would find water to drink and a place to lie down. I was exhausted. I tried the handle and it opened.
I walked in slowly, hoping that Dane would not be there. I shut the door and paused, waiting to hear any sound. After not hearing anything for twenty seconds, I headed to the kitchenette. I grabbed a bottle of water and an apple from the refrigerator.
I sipped the water slowly and capped the bottle when I was satisfied. I bit into the apple and headed towards where I guessed to be the bedroom.
I went straight to the bed and climbed in after taking off my strappy sandals. I pulled the covers over myself and checked the time on my phone.
It was almost midnight. I wondered when Arden and Melrose would be ready to go home, and if Dane would come here like Melrose had said.
If he did, maybe I would make out with him and get Melrose off my neck.
I closed my eyes, thinking of the things I would be doing if I had not agreed to come here. Definitely painting. I needed to finish the sunset painting I had been doing from a first person point of view.
Just as I was about to fall asleep, I heard someone come in. I opened my eyes, trying to clear the sleep and alcohol induced haziness from my mind.
My eyes landed on the figure of the picture perfect man. His hair was very dark, slightly curly and glossy. He was trying to take his shoes off and his hand was on the light switch. My eyes landed on his perfect face just before he dimmed the lights.
âWho are you?â He asked as soon as his eyes found me. My heart sank at the sound of his velvety deep voice. I immediately knew I was in trouble.
Chapter TwelveELOWEN VALE WINSLOW âSeems like you'll be working late today,â the lady who had directed me around the foundation and its various wings showed me the way to the kids station. I had forgotten the way and I had been fortunate to find her. I glanced at my watch. It was a few minutes after four in the afternoon. I needed at least three hours to get this place started and get a sense of the places that furniture would be placed and places artwork would be. âI suppose so,â I responded grimly. I didn't like the thought of being away from Seren too much and too often. She was too young for that. She deserved to get picked up from preschool by her mother and then be taken home to a nice meal. The lady glanced back at me and I struggled to remember her name as I smiled politely to assure her that I was fine. âYou know,â she began as we stepped into one of the skybridges. I looked through the glass at the playing field where children ran around. The foundation was not yet in
CHAPTER ELEVENMAEL VIRELIS âSo, what did you want to talk about?â I asked Melrose as I wiped my face. I had just finished brushing my teeth and Melrose had been on speakerphone brushing hers too. She loved being on the phone with me as much as she could. It made me wonder why she had still not moved in with me. We had been together for two years and I had popped the question three months ago. Maybe it had all been a little too fast by the standards of other people, but we were both perfectly fine at the pace we were moving. She still lived in Connecticut and came to visit me often. But it would never be as good as her living with me. âYeah soâŚâ she cleared her throat and shuffled in the background. She was climbing into her bed. Good for her. I didn't have that luxury. I still had some work to finish. âI've been thinking about college,â she said. I paused for a second, thinking about it. âReally?â I asked. âWhat changed your mind?âI remember trying to convince her to go to col
CHAPTER TENELOWEN VALE WINSLOW I walked into the lobby, struggling to balance my purse on my shoulder, along with the paper bags that were almost overflowing with groceries. It had been a long day at the Children's facility. From being directed around the campus to meeting some of the children, my favorite part, and then that meeting. I needed to start working on the interior decorations and the art designs. For now, I needed to get dinner ready for Seren and I. I could not help wondering what she and the babysitter had been up to. It had been fairly easy to find a qualified babysitter through an app I had found on my phone. I was going to ask the building manager if it would be okay to install cameras in the apartment. We had been here three days and it had been great so far. Seren liked her room, although I still felt the need to add personal effects of hers to make it more comfortable for her. I would do anything for her comfort. The elevator dinged, telling me I had arrived o
CHAPTER NINEMAEL VIRELISI walked speedily into the lobby of the administrative building of the children's center, accepting all the greetings that were being thrown my way. I made my way into the elevator, noting how bland and bare everywhere still looked. I was glad that things would start looking better soon, since Aunt Greta had finally found the âperfect person'.I still could not understand why some random woman from Portland was the chosen one in my aunt's eyes. It was okay though. Aunt Greta was a little weird and I was used to that. I glanced at my watch. If the elevator did not move faster, I would be one minute late. And there was nothing I hated more than being late to a meeting or having to wait for someone that was late. My phone started to ring just as the elevator doors slid open. It was Melrose. If I wasn't under so much pressure, I would have smiled. I missed her.âHey,â I spoke into the phone, walking down the hallway to the meeting room where everyone else was.
Chapter EightELOWEN VALE WINSLOW The drive to the airport was quiet for the most part, except for Seren occasionally humming a song she had been taught in her daycare back at Portland. âWe're here,â Grace announced, glancing back at me from the front passenger seat. The taxi driver muttered an affirmation and I climbed out of the car. I took Seren out of her car seat and placed her comfortably on my hip. She leaned her head against my chest. Grace joined the taxi driver to take her two suitcases out of the trunk and then walked back towards us with a smile. My eyes watered, but I swallowed the emotion. âThank you so much for everything,â I said as I grasped one of her suitcases and walked into the airport. âIt's my job,â Grace smiled. She reached forward and stroked Seren's hair. Seren smiled fondly at her. âWhen are you coming back?â Seren asked even though I had explained to her that we would not be here for Grace to come back to. We would be somewhere else. New York. She d
Chapter Seven ELOWEN VALE WINSLOW âI do it,â Seren quietly said and took her toothbrush from me after I squeezed her strawberry toothpaste onto it. We both brushed our teeth and I raised her to the counter so she could spit out lather easily. She watched me as I spat mine out. âYou done?â I asked with a small smile. She nodded and reached for my sleep shirt. I drew closer to her and she hugged me. My heart melted. The last few days had been hectic and I felt like I had been neglecting her. I kissed her cheek. I massaged her curly hair and reached for her tiny bonnet. I carefully placed it over her hair. It made it easier for her and me to tame her curls in the morning. âI love you, Mommy,â she whispered as I lifted her off the counter and headed out of the bathroom. The suite was very comfortable and child-friendly. I really liked that. âGuess what?â I asked, as we walked into the room we shared. Grace took the other room. She yawned and looked at me through droopy eyes.
