"No," Adrian said. "I was never mad at your mom."

He sat down on the wet school step beside us. His good trousers soaked through. He didn't seem to notice.

"Then why?" Ethan asked.

Adrian was quiet for a moment. I watched him think about lying. I watched him decide not to.

"Because I found out I did something wrong," he said. "A long time ago. I didn't mean to. But it hurt your mom, and it hurt you, and I felt so bad about it that I didn't know how to look at either of you."

Ethan frowned. "Wha

  • He Called Me His Wife’s Cousin    The last lie

"I don't know."Rachel stared at me."I don't know," I said again. "That's the truth. I swear it on Ethan's life."Behind her, through the bare window, I could see Adrian halfway across the street, a dark shape walking into the glare of the headlights."You don't know who the father of your own child is.""I didn't let myself know it might not be Nathan until a few days ago.""You expect me to believe that.""Yes," I said. "Because it's true."She laughed. It bounced off the bare walls."You told me you were his cousin," she said. "You let me tell my own brother you were family." She took a step closer. "And now you're telling me you had a baby and you just *don't know* who the father is?""There was one night," I said. I didn't let my voice stop me. "Before the wedding. One night with a stranger. I never knew his name. I never saw his face clearly. I never saw him again.""How convenient.""Do you want to know why I said yes to the cousin lie?" My voice rose. "Outside the Wingate? Do

  • He Called Me His Wife’s Cousin    Six years

"Six years."Rachel watched me from her box. "That's what he said.""Six years ago." My hand was still gripping the windowsill. The new paint was still sticky. "Six years ago, Ethan was two. He had his first heart surgery.""I know. You told me in the café. In front of the lemon tea.""And six years ago, Nathan left." The words came faster. "Your brother's job. He said it was for the surgery bills, and he'd come home every few months. And then he just... stopped coming.""Claire...""Six years." I turned away from the window. "He knew. He knew the whole time. He didn't leave because of money. He left because..."I couldn't finish.Rachel finished it for me."Because the boy wasn't his," she said quietly. "And he didn't want to raise him."I sat down on the folding chair after all. The metal was cold through my jeans.Rachel didn't move from her box. The hard line of her mouth had gone. Her eyelids looked heavy."I thought he left because of me," I said to the floor. "For six years. I

  • He Called Me His Wife’s Cousin    Empty rooms

"Text me when you're inside," Adrian said. "And again when you're leaving. If you're not out in an hour, I'm coming up.""She asked for me alone.""I know. That's why I'm in the car." He turned off the engine. "Not in the room."It was Monday, seven o'clock, outside a new building across the river. Rachel had given me the address last night in a voice like someone reading from a list. *Seven tomorrow. Come alone. Don't bring him.*I hadn't brought him. He had brought himself."You don't have to do this," he had said in the car on the way over. "You don't owe her anything.""I owe her a lot.""Not this. Not alone in a room with her when she's like this.""She asked," I had said. "She hasn't asked anyone for anything since the courtroom. She asked me.""She's my sister," he had said this morning at my desk, low enough that Marcus couldn't hear. "I know what she's like when she's hurt. She doesn't hit. She cuts." He had looked at me. "I'm not letting you walk in there without someone dow

  • He Called Me His Wife’s Cousin    Sunday

"He was talking about grown-up things," I said. "Not about you."Ethan didn't believe me. He had watched Nathan wave at us from a gray car. He was eight, not stupid. And he was mine.Adrian crouched down in front of him on the grass."Your dad said some mean things," he said. "About your mom. They weren't true, and they weren't about you. I told him to leave, and he left.""Are you going to tell him to leave every time?""Every single time," Adrian said. "If he comes near you when you don't want him to, I'll tell him."Ethan studied his face. Then he nodded once and let Sophia drag him back to the blanket to finish the grapes.Adrian stood up. He didn't let go of my hand.***On Sunday morning, Ethan and I made duck pancakes that looked like lumpy clouds with beaks. At ten, Sophia called on Adrian's phone."Is Ethan there? It's important."Ethan listened, eyes going wide. "No WAY." He covered the phone. "Mom. Ducks have *three eyelids.*"He wandered off still talking, grinning so wide

  • He Called Me His Wife’s Cousin    One night

"Yes," I said. "Part of it is true." Adrian didn't move. The wind lifted the hair off his forehead and dropped it again. Behind me, on the blanket, Sophia was still explaining spy ducks. Ethan wasn't answering her. I didn't have to turn around to know he was watching us. "Which part?" Adrian asked. "There was someone. Before the wedding. One night." I made myself keep looking at him. "Not an affair. Not a boyfriend. One night, with a man I'd never met before and never saw again." "At the Wingate." "Yes." He looked down at the road. At the empty patch of gravel where Nathan's car had been. A muscle moved in his jaw, once, twice. "He waved at you," he said. "He watched me kiss you, and then he waved." "I saw." "Who was he?" "I don't know." His eyes came back up to mine. "You don't know." "I never knew his name." My voice shook. I steadied it. "It was a party. It was dark. I was twenty-three and terrified of the wedding and this stranger asked me how I was, and a

  • He Called Me His Wife’s Cousin    Across the road

"Don't turn around," I whispered.Adrian's hand was still on my cheek. His face was an inch from mine. His thumb stopped moving on my skin."What's wrong?""Nathan. Behind you. In a gray car across the road."His jaw tightened under my fingers. He didn't turn. He kept looking at me, his eyes steady, his voice low."How long has he been there?""I don't know. I just saw him.""The kids?"I looked past his arm. Ethan and Sophia were still on the blanket fifty feet away, heads together over the grapes, giggling."They haven't seen him.""Good." Adrian took his hand off my face."He's been following me," I whispered. "Hasn't he? Since the courthouse.""Maybe longer." Adrian's voice was flat. "I should have had someone watching your building." Slowly, so it wouldn't look sudden to anyone watching. "Go back to them. Sit with them. Keep them laughing. Don't look at the road.""Adrian, don't...""I'm just going to talk to him.""That's what I'm afraid of."He looked at me with the same hard c
