I was a top ER nurse at the city hospital. Over the years, I helped save thousands of lives. During my day off, I received an urgent call from my department chief. “Zayn, there’s a child at a daycare near your neighborhood suffering from a severe allergic reaction. The ambulance is stuck in traffic. Please get over there immediately and administer first aid.” I grabbed my emergency kit and rushed to the daycare. When I arrived, one of the teachers falsely accused me of being a child trafficker. He shoved me aside and shouted, “He’s a trafficker. Do not let him touch the child.” Furious and desperate, I pulled up my digital nursing license. “I am an ER nurse. If you keep stopping me, this child could die.” He insisted my credentials were fake, and I had no choice but to wait for the ambulance. When the ambulance finally arrived to take the child to the hospital, the teacher jumped in again. He claimed we were working together and refused to let us leave. Everything changed when the child’s mother arrived with a DNA test report in her hand. His entire world collapsed in an instant.

Chapter 1

A sharp ringing tore through my sleep while I was on leave.

The screen showed the name Dr. Warren, ER Department Director. Instinct took over before I was fully awake, and I answered the call.

“Zayn, you’re home, right? Hurry. Something happened at Star Kindergarten in your neighborhood. A five‑year‑old girl named Emily accidentally ate peanuts. She’s having a severe allergic reaction. Her throat is swelling, and she can barely breathe.”

His voice sounded hoarse and close to roaring. “There’s a pileup on the elevated highway during rush hour. Our ambulance is stuck three kilometers away. You need to get there now and start emergency treatment.”

“Got it.”

I did not change my clothes. Still in my home loungewear, I grabbed the emergency kit by the door and ran out.

By the time I rushed into the kindergarten, chaos had already taken over.

“Emily! Emily, what’s wrong?”

A few teachers stood around the slide, panicking and unable to act.

I pushed through the crowd and dropped beside her.

The child clutched her throat with both hands. Her face had turned bluish purple, and her lips were darkening.

“I am an ER nurse from the city hospital. Clear the area and keep the air flowing.”

I gave the order and opened my kit. My hands moved on instinct as I drew up epinephrine and prepared an intramuscular injection for her outer thigh.

The moment the needle was about to go in, a heavy force slammed into me from behind.

“What are you doing? Let go of her!”

I hit the ground hard. The syringe flew from my hand and rolled across the floor.

I looked up in fury. The kindergarten teacher, Vincent Lane, had already pulled the child into his arms.

“Mr. Lane, are you insane? Her throat is swelling shut. She’s suffocating. She needs medication and a hospital right now.”

I scrambled up, my eyes burning. “The ambulance cannot get in. My car is outside. We need to get her into it right now.”

I reached for my keys, ready to evacuate her myself.

The moment my hand touched the car door, a rough hand clamped down on my wrist.

It was the security guard.

“You’re not going anywhere,” the guard yelled.

Vincent pointed at me and shouted, “Grab him. Someone stop him. He’s a child trafficker. He’s trying to steal the child in the chaos.”

Parents who had not left turned at once. The word trafficker spread through the crowd like a spark in dry grass. In seconds, I was surrounded.

“I am not a trafficker. I am Zayn Hale, an ER nurse from the city hospital.” Sweat ran down my face. I pointed at the child. “Look at her face color. This is a severe allergic reaction. If we do not get her to a hospital or perform an emergency airway procedure, she will not last five minutes.”

Vincent did not even look at her. With a vicious glare, he took advantage of the moment I was restrained, snatched my keys, and threw them into the bushes.

“Still lying. What nurse does not wear a uniform? You’re trying to abduct her.”

“Guh… guh…”

Emily’s throat let out broken, ragged wheezing sounds.

Her eyes rolled upward. Her small body convulsed in Vincent’s arms.

Oxygen loss was destroying her brain.

She was running out of time.
