Chapter 3

Penulis: Sole Authority
“Get away. All of you, get away.”

I did not know where the strength came from. I lunged forward and bit down hard on the wrist of the security guard restraining my left hand.

He cried out in pain and loosened his grip. I tore one hand free and, with fingers smeared in dirt and blood, tremblingly sent a video call request to Dr. Warren from the ER.

The call connected.

Dr. Warren’s face appeared on the screen, drenched in sweat beneath her white coat.

“Zayn, how is the child? Is the airway open yet?”

I turned the camera toward the chaotic crowd and Vincent, shouting at the top of my lungs.

“Doctor, they are not letting me save her. They are saying I am a child trafficker.”

The moment Dr. Warren saw the scene, she exploded in rage. “This is nonsense. Absolute nonsense. I am Hannah Warren, Chief of Emergency Medicine at the city hospital. Mr. Hale is a trained medical professional dispatched by us. That child is about to suffocate. You people are committing murder. Let him through immediately.”

Her voice, along with the hospital logo on her white coat, made the surrounding parents hesitate. The circle around me loosened slightly.

“Mr. Lane, this really does look like a doctor. Maybe we should…” A parent spoke up with uncertainty.

Smack.

A sharp crack cut through the air.

Vincent rushed forward and slapped my hand. My phone flew out, crashed onto the stone steps, and shattered into a spiderweb of cracks. Dr. Warren’s urgent voice cut off at once.

“What are you doing?” I roared, my eyes bloodshot.

“Still acting?” Vincent pointed at the broken phone and let out a cold laugh. He looked around at everyone. “Everyone, do not be fooled. AI face‑swapping scams are everywhere now. Even celebrities can be faked, let alone a random person in a white coat. That is obviously her accomplice pretending to be a doctor.”

He tightened his grip on Emily and stepped back, keeping her farther away from me.

“Think about it. What kind of nurse ignores an ambulance and insists on using a private car? Does that follow protocol? He wants to get the child into his black car, and once she is inside, she is gone forever.”

His twisted logic, absurd as it was, swayed the already panicked crowd again.

“Yeah, why would he use a private car for rescue?”

“I almost got fooled. Mr. Lane is right. This guy is too sneaky.”

The security guards pinned me down again, harder than before. My cheek scraped against the rough ground.

Through clenched teeth, I forced out, “The ambulance is stuck in traffic. That is why I came with my own car. If we wait any longer, she is going to die.”

“Please… just look at her… she is really not going to make it…” Tears burst from my eyes.

Vincent did not blink. He held the child tightly and stared at me with cold indifference.

The countdown of life had never felt so cruel or so slow.

I looked at Emily, who was only two meters away, in utter despair.

Her struggle grew weaker by the second. The small hands that had been clutching her throat had fallen limp at her sides.

Three months later, the case went to trial. In the defendant’s seat, Vincent was escorted in by two bailiffs. In only three months, he had become unrecognizable. His hair had turned almost completely white, his body was gaunt and skeletal, and his eyes were unfocused. His mind had already collapsed. He clutched a worn piece of clothing that once belonged to Emily and muttered nonstop like a broken record.“Sweetie, have some candy… Daddy is peeling candy for you… Sweetie, it is okay. It does not hurt anymore…”The judge struck the gavel.“Defendant Vincent deliberately fed the victim a fatal allergen, fabricated evidence, incited public panic, and obstructed emergency medical personnel, causing the victim to miss the critical rescue window and die. His actions constitute intentional homicide, with extremely cruel methods, severe circumstances, and grave social impact.“The court hereby sentences the defendant, Vincent, to life imprisonment.”At the moment of sentencing, Vincent

“Shut your mouth.” Fiona’s eyes were blood red, and she roared like an enraged lioness. “Zayn was not some gigolo. He went to your kindergarten as a volunteer for a medical checkup last month. He found Emily had bruises and needle marks all over her arms and thighs. Out of medical ethics, he contacted me through the welfare system. I am her sponsor.”She pointed at me. Her voice trembled with overwhelming grief and rage.“It was me. I asked Mr. Hale, since we lived in the same neighborhood, to occasionally help look after this poor child. I never imagined the monster abusing her in that kindergarten was you. You did not only abuse her. You twisted everything, framed an innocent man as a boy toy, and fabricated fake chat logs to destroy him.”The surrounding officers and onlookers slowly began to understand. Guilt replaced suspicion in their eyes.“That is not true.”Vincent grabbed the documents and flipped through them frantically, trying to prove Fiona was lying. The moment his

She was Vincent’s wife, Fiona. She had rushed back from an out‑of‑town business trip. The moment she saw Vincent sitting in the police station lobby, she charged at him in fury.Smack.A loud, brutal slap landed across Vincent’s face and knocked him to the ground.“Have you lost your mind? What are you doing?” Fiona grabbed him by the collar. Her eyes were red and burning as she screamed. Her voice shook. “Emily is dead. You stood there and did nothing. You even spread rumors that she was my illegitimate child.”Vincent clutched his swollen cheek. Instead of crying, he burst into a chilling, hysterical laugh.“Hahaha. You call that a rumor? Fiona, do you think I am an idiot?”He scrambled up from the ground like a madman and pointed at her.“You dare say she is not your child? That little bastard looks exactly like you. Even more ridiculous, she is allergic to peanuts just like you. What are the odds of that?”His voice grew more unhinged with every word. His face twisted with

The announcement that resuscitation had failed plunged the entire chaotic scene into a deathly silence. The parents exchanged stunned looks. The rage on their faces slowly faded into fear and lingering shock.I was handcuffed and placed into a police car. Before I got in, I fixed my eyes on Vincent. He covered his face and pretended to weep in front of the officers. Through the gaps between his fingers, I caught it clearly. There was a flash of satisfaction and a brief, victorious smirk.Inside the interrogation room, I endured the longest twenty‑four hours of my life.Outside, the world had already erupted.Vincent gave an interview in the police station hallway to several unethical self‑media accounts. On camera, he sobbed as though his heart had been torn out.“I never imagined there could be such a vicious man in this world. He faked a nurse identity to fight over my wife’s assets, and in broad daylight, he killed a child. If he had not disrupted the rescue, the child woul

“Everybody freeze! Police!”At the moment both sides were locked in a standoff, chaos reached its peak, and three police cars roared in. A civilian report had finally triggered a response. More than a dozen heavily armed officers rushed out and took control of the scene.“Officers, help.” Vincent ran forward the moment he saw them. He pointed at us and shouted, “These traffickers are insane. They came in fake ambulances to steal the child and even impersonated doctors and nurses. If you had arrived one minute later, this child would be dead.”The police looked at him holding a critically ill child. The first impression made the lead officer instantly wary.“Everyone back off. All of you, squat down and cooperate with the investigation.”“Officer, I am a doctor from the city hospital. Please let us perform emergency treatment immediately.” Dr. Warren raised her hands and shouted.“No more talking. We will verify your credentials at the station,” the officer snapped. He turned to

“Give me back the keys. Give me the child.”Panic tore through my chest as I stared at Emily’s condition.
