Maya's POV

We took three cars.

The medic in the back kept two fingers on my wrist and said nothing, which was how I knew my pulse was bad. Rain came and went. Town gave way to fields, and fields to a stretch of road where the mile markers counted down toward nothing. I counted with them. I counted until the numbers stopped meaning anything, and then I counted the seconds Alex's jaw stayed locked.

Alder Street was one block long.

A yellow house sat on the left with a hedge b

Damn it! They were so close. This is so messed up. I hope Alex and Maya are able to burn the whole organization and all the people in it to the ground. I am dying that they don’t have their son back yet. This is killing me slowly.

  • He Came Back Running    Chapter 402

Alex's POVI was on my feet before Tessa finished her sentence.I hadn't decided to stand. The chair simply went back, and eleven investors looked at me, then at Maya, then down at the table, the way people look away when a stranger's quarrel spills across a restaurant.Maya hadn't moved. She sat beneath her father's portrait with her palms flat on the walnut, and I watched the news travel across her face in stages. A flutter at the base of her throat. The color leaving, her mouth. Then the ordinary focus of a woman chairing a meeting drained out of her eyes. What came in behind it was cold and level and entirely awake.Down the table, Preston Vale's thumb had stopped on his tablet. The sovereign fund's emissary had lifted his eyes. Whitcombe's pen hung over his pad. Everyone in that room understood that something had just walked into the building, and no one knew what.Whatever just came through those front doors, it isn't a courtesy visit. Her face already knows

  • He Came Back Running    Chapter 401

Maya's POV Nobody moved. A spoon touched a saucer. Whitcombe's pen stopped halfway to the pad. At the foot of the table, the sovereign emissary lifted his eyes for the first time that morning. Beside me, Alex went still. He didn't speak. I felt it through my knee, the way you feel a wall at your back in the dark, solid and warm. His hand came to rest on the table beside mine. It did not cover it. He only left it there. "I'm going to tell you what I owe you," I said. "Then I'm going to tell you what I won't do." I looked down the long table, face by face. "Nine years ago, my father died and this company was a ship with a hole in it. Six months ago, a man I used to be married to tried to take it, and a forged document tried to take it after him. Fifty-one percent, on paper that hadn't been made yet. Every one of you could have sold. The share price fell nineteen points that week." I let it sit. "You held." Whitcombe's jaw moved. "I've thought about why. It wasn't my nam

  • He Came Back Running    Chapter 400

Maya's POVThe boardroom on the forty-first floor had been my father's favorite room.Glass on three sides, the river a gray ribbon far below, and a walnut table so long that people at the far end had to lean to be heard. His portrait hung at the head, a small oil in a plain frame. Edwin Hargrove at fifty, not smiling, one hand resting on a ledger. The painter had caught his eyes. They looked at you as though you had already said something and he was waiting for the second half of it.I sat directly beneath it.Eleven investors filled the chairs. Two pension funds, a pair of family offices, and the emissary of a sovereign fund in a gray suit who had not touched his coffee. On the wall screen the share price ran in a green line, flat for a week, up four-tenths of a point since the interview. Freight volume was up. No major client had walked. I could have recited the numbers in my sleep.Nobody at the table was looking at them. They looked at the screen the wa

Reeves POV "Stop." It tore out of me. It sounded nothing like my voice. "Stop. I'll tell you. Let them go first." The count stopped. Mason did not smile. I watched him not smile. His thumb stayed over the screen, and for one second, no more, I saw it shake. "I never intended to kill them," he said. The words were rough and low, and I couldn't tell who they were for. "I'm telling you that because it's true, and because it won't matter." He lifted his eyes. "If you hold the name back, it happens. I'll make the call myself. Tell me, and they're held until it's confirmed. After that, I don't promise." "That's not a deal." "It's the only one in the room." Helen's face filled the little screen. The gun had not moved. I looked at her until I couldn't.... "The name leaves my mouth like a betrayal of everything that kept me standing."But her face on that screen is still alive. "Richard Voss," I said. Nothing moved. Mason's face did som

  • He Came Back Running    Chapter 398

Reeves POVI'm not sure why. The cold was in my teeth by then, and the hours had worn something thin. A man in a room like that starts talking the way a drowning man starts to pray, to anything, to the dark. "I was sixteen," I said. Mason's eyes narrowed. He didn't stop me. "My mother cleaned offices at night. My father wasn't a subject. He was a rumor. I was behind a Hargrove Meridian loading dock one February, stripping copper off a loading ramp with a pipe wrench, because rent was due and I'd stopped believing in anything else." The words came out slowly, each one set down on the steel. "A man in a good coat came out of the side door and stood watching me. I figured he'd call it in." "Edwin Hargrove." "He asked if I was hungry." I could still hear it, quiet, almost shy, the way a man asks a stray. "I said no. He said he'd buy me a sandwich anyway. We ate on the ramp in the cold. He never once mentioned the wrench." A drip fell in the drain.... "He pai

  • He Came Back Running    Chapter 397

Reeves's POV The room had a taste. Cold iron, with something sweeter under it, like a coin held too long on the tongue. I had breathed it so long I could no longer tell where it ended and my own mouth began. A drain at the center of the floor gave a small wet sound every few minutes. I counted those sounds because counting was the only thing left that belonged to me. Sixty-one drips since the door last closed. About five hours. The hood, the needle and the van had taken the rest. My shoulders had gone numb. The cuffs bit the same two inches of wrist, and the ring in the table did not give. Through the cold, through the light that never changed, one fact stood clear. They had not touched my wife... They had not needed to. The bolt slid back, and Mason came in alone. He looked worse than he had at the start. The jacket was creased and the collar open. A gray shadow of beard had begun along his jaw. He sat down across from me without a word and laid his hand

  • He Came Back Running    Chapter 4

Maya’s POVThe coordination suite felt smaller with just the two of us in it. The harbor glittered beyond the glass like it was mocking us both, endless, indifferent, moving on without caring who drowned.Selina didn’t bother with the soft, apologetic mask anymore. The moment Lila’s footsteps faded

  • He Came Back Running    Chapter 3

Maya’s POVThe alarm screamed at 6:00 a.m. sharp, a shrill, unforgiving sound that drilled straight into my skull“Damn it,” I hissed, slapping the phone silent before it could cycle into its second round. My head throbbed part hangover from too much crying, part exhaustion from staring at the ceil

Maya’s POVI stayed until the last possible minute. Not because there was work left. Because I needed time to rebuild the mask.By the time I stepped into the executive hallway leading to the private parking garage, my heels clicked with deliberate calm. My makeup was fresh, concealer over the red

  • He Came Back Running    Chapter 1

Maya’s POV“She is two months pregnant.”“I can’t believe it,” Mason’s voice carried through the cracked boardroom door, low and reverent, the way he used to speak to me only in our earliest days before the miscarriages, before the silence grew between us like frost on glass. “Two months?”My fing
