Chapter 1

I watched Jared Hamilton tangled up with Luciana Rose in the crystal orb. One of them was my mate, and the other was my best friend. Every drop of blood in my body seemed to freeze.

I sat on the couch, as though my soul had been ripped out of my body, and stared blankly ahead. The imagery in the orb continued playing, and I couldn't quite look away as they kissed their way from the living room to the bedroom.

He pushed her down on the bed, fingers sliding over her clothes like he had done a thousand times. "Can we do it tonight?"

She pretended to blush, covering her eyes with the tips of her fingers. "At this point? Just do it already."

Their bodies tangled together, and every moment of witnessing it was a blade twisting deeper into my heart.

When Jared and I first got together, I even introduced Luciana to him. Before meeting her, I had told him, "She's my best friend. We basically grew up together, and I trust her with everything. If she approves of you, our bond will only be stronger."

He had put on the perfect smile and promised me. "I'll make sure of it. Consider it done."

I had gone with him to buy gifts, arms full of bags, as we sat outside a cozy cafe waiting. The moment Jared saw Luciana, his eyes widened—just for a heartbeat—before he snapped back and greeted her with a polite smile.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Jared Hamilton, Monica's mate."

Luciana dropped her usual gentle, sweet act in an instant. The first look she gave him was pure hostility.

"I don't care if you're an Alpha. I'm not convinced you can take care of her. I know just how debauched you Alphas can be behind closed doors. Who knows how many women you've got on the side?"

Back then, I wanted so badly to defend him and tell her that Jared wasn't like the others. Before I could say anything, though, Luciana dragged me away. The whole meeting ended up a mess.

I couldn't understand why she disliked him so much just from a first impression, but then, watching them wrapped around each other in the vision, I finally understood.

After they finished, Luciana curled into Jared's arms and asked softly, "Do you really only love me? What if you fall for someone else?"

Without missing a beat, he answered, "Never. You're the only one I'll ever love, Luciana."

I couldn't hold it in anymore. The tears broke through like a dam bursting, and I cried so hard my chest felt like it was splitting open. I couldn't remember what happened next, as I felt like I had lost all my senses.

It wasn't until the light snapped on that I finally came back to myself. From the doorway came Jared's quizzical voice. "Monica? Why are you sitting on the floor?"

He walked closer, only to be caught off guard when he saw how swollen and puffy my eyes were from crying. He quickly rushed over without kicking off his shoes, then crouched in front of me to gently wipe off my tears.

"Hey… Why are you crying? What happened? You can tell me. Whatever it is, you know I can take care of it."

His voice was so tender and delicate that it almost made me believe he still loved me. For a stupid, desperate moment, I wondered if the crystal orb had glitched.

He continued, "I'm your anchor. You can count on me for anything—always."

"But why?" Luciana shrieked. "Why is it that you get to be with the man I love? Why won't he get over you? And then, I finally understood. It's because you're Monica Sylvester, my best friend."My gaze dimmed. The vow we once made to cherish each other forever had withered long ago. Yes, Jared's betrayal hurt, but Luciana's carved deeper. She was my chosen family, someone I trusted without question and would sacrifice myself for. But nothing could change her betrayal—no explanation or regret could undo it.I looked at her coldly. "We'll never go back to the way we were, Luciana. You showing up here today isn't about saving our friendship, is it? Maybe it's because Jared has made his choice between us."You can't handle losing both him and me, so you came back to try to salvage our friendship."I took a deep breath and continued, "Don't worry. I'll end my mate bond with him. After that, nothing will stand in the way of your relationship with him."I picked up the bottle of potion,

I didn't go home. Instead, I checked into a hotel. My phone wouldn't stop buzzing. Jared kept flooding it with messages, begging me to give him another chance to explain. He swore repeatedly that things with Luciana weren't as serious as I thought and promised he would cut off all contact with her. Fed up with his pestering, I ultimately blocked his number. With my phone off, I sat blankly on the hotel couch. The night wind was cold, but it was nothing compared to the storm inside me.I remembered back when Jared and I first set our mating ceremony. I had hoped he and Luciana could bury the hatchet, considering one was the love of my life and the other my best friend.I didn't want to be stuck in the middle of their fights, but at that time, they both said no in perfect unison. I remembered feeling extremely embarrassed and confused. How could two people who barely knew each other harbor such intense animosity? I found the answer. Their act of mutual dislike was just a way to dece

"I'll go through the pits of hell if it means saving your life," Jared had said to me.Back then, I genuinely believed no one in the whole damn world could ever love me more than Jared did. When he got out of the hospital, I gave him all of me.One night, when things were at the height of passion between us, he held my face and asked, "Monica, will you be my mate?"I cried and nodded over and over, saying yes as if it were the easiest thing ever. Later, though, I found out from the visions in the crystal orb that the abduction had involved not only me but also Luciana. We were both knocked out with sedatives, tossed aside like baggage. After tracking the Rogues down, he chose to rescue her first. However, the abductors changed their minds at the last minute, forcing him into that brutal fight. The one he was willing to bleed for had never been me. It had always been Luciana.Even when the rescue team arrived, Jared didn't tell them to save him first. He begged them to get Luciana

Luciana twisted the truth, trying to shove all the blame onto me. "You're joking, right? You know I've never gotten along with him. If I hadn't had anyone else to call, I wouldn't even have reached out to him."I had zero patience for her weak, hollow excuses. My voice rose, questioning her again, "Where were you? Answer the question!"I wasn't going to go back to the old me, the one who would rush to soothe Luciana every time she threw a fit. Back then, I was terrified of losing a friend like her, so I would bend over backward to apologize just to keep the peace. But now? I couldn't care less about having a friend like Luciana.I stood there, still as stone, my gaze fixed on her. Slowly, panic filled her gaze. Having grown used to me orbiting around her, she was suddenly at a loss.Seeing both of them as stubborn as mules, I took a deep breath. "Fine. Since neither of you will talk, I'll say it for you."I thought my heart had gone numb, that nothing could hurt me anymore, but t

Jared held his face, staring at me as if I had just struck him with lightning. Luciana snapped out of her shock first. Her expression shifted in a heartbeat, and she slapped Jared on the other cheek."Did you upset Monica again? Don't you remember what you promised me? You said you'd leave her forever if you ever made her feel even the tiniest bit of hurt."She then turned to me, trying to hug me, as if nothing filthy had just happened between them. "Monica, it was an accident… I swear I didn't mean to…"Sometimes, I truly admired Luciana's nerve. The world could burn around her, and she could still pretend she was innocent. Without a care for propriety, I stepped back before she could even touch me."Don't touch me," I said coldly. Even as Luciana's smile faded, I didn't hold back. "And stay away from me, you filthy thing. I don't want whatever you have getting on me."Her face twisted, but before she could say a word, Jared rushed to my side as though he could still fix this wit

Jared shrugged on his coat, already halfway out the door. Maybe I should have done what I always did—tell him to be careful on the road, or not to worry about me and focus on Luciana. But now, those words couldn't even come out. They tasted like blood in my throat.I watched Jared's back as he moved toward the door. Fear hit me like a tidal wave. I ignored the churning in my stomach and forced myself up off the floor. My hands gripped the doorframe, shaking as I tried to hold myself up. "Jared."His hand froze on the doorknob. He turned, confused, looking at me like I was some shadow in the corner. Even seeing me so weak didn't seem to shake his determination to leave, but I couldn't give up yet."Can you not go?" I asked, voice trembling with a tiny desperation. Even now, after everything, I clung to the last sliver of hope that he might stay for me. I walked barefoot to him and wrapped my arms around his waist from behind. I pressed my forehead against his back, softly begging
