Chapter 4

Author: Space Journey
As I was about to leave, I saw the entire Donaldson family gathered in the main hall.

Wayne and Valeria stood in the center holding their baby, looking every bit the picture of a happy family.

When the Donaldsons noticed me, the looks they gave me were sharp and judgmental.

"As Mrs. Donaldson, how dare she arrive late to a Donaldson family dinner. She has no manners at all!"

"Shelby can't have children, yet she still tries to stop others from having them. If I were her, I'd have left with nothing. How does she even have the face to cling to the Donaldsons?"

Maria was as sarcastic as ever.

I almost laughed at her haughtiness. Sure enough, it was amazing how wealth changed someone.

When we first met, Maria was just an ordinary housewife living in a cramped apartment. She held my hand and enthusiastically said, "We'd be family from now on. I'd treat you like my daughter."

When she learned that I could no longer conceive after saving Wayne in an accident, she hugged me, cried, and swore. "Child or not, you're the only daughter-in-law of the Donaldsons. I'll be the first to stand up for you if anyone ever messes with you!"

Now that the Donaldsons were wealthy, she had lost her humanity.

Wayne turned to look at me with hesitation in his eyes. His lips moved to speak, but he ended up saying nothing.

As I turned to leave, Valeria approached with a glass of wine and suddenly lunged at me. When I stepped aside to dodge, she collapsed onto the floor, and the wine glass shattered around her.

"I was just trying to give you a toast, Mrs. Donaldson. Why did you push me?"

I coldly watched her pathetic performance and was too unbothered to engage. But Wayne charged over from afar and shoved me back so hard that I hit the floor.

"Valeria! Are you okay?" he gasped in concern and helped her up.

"I'm fine, Wayne. I just think I've sprained my ankle," she theatrically complained.

Wayne immediately turned to glare at me and furiously snapped, "I'm so disappointed in you, Shelby! Did you really have to go this far? Apologize to Valeria right now!"

Valeria had tripped over on her own, yet Wayne was demanding that I apologize to her. She wasn't even hurt, while I was shoved into a pool of broken shards with blood trickling down my hand.

But Wayne didn't even notice. He helped Valeria up and rushed her to the hospital.

After the farce was over, I left the Donaldson residence and got into the Maybach waiting by the curb.

Then, I popped the SIM card out of my phone and flicked it out the window.

Goodbye, Wayne.

Wayne didn't die at the wedding and was rushed into an ambulance. The knife hadn't reached his heart, but he was badly injured.Perhaps that brush with death forced him to accept reality and let go for good, because I never saw him again for a long time after that.…After the wedding, Mason and I were inseparable. We fell deeply in love.My period didn't come for two months, so I bought a pregnancy test. I stared at the two lines with a heart full of conflicting emotions. For years, Maria and Harland had criticized me endlessly for my inability to conceive. I had carried that guilt toward Wayne and lived in a constant state of insecurity for fear that he would leave me just because I couldn't give him a child.Ironically, that fear became reality.I thought I would never have a child of my own, yet here I was, unexpectedly pregnant without even trying. When Mason found out, he immediately pressed his ear to my belly and warned, "You'd better be on your best behavior, little on

As the wedding date steadily approached, Mason and I grew closer with each passing day.One evening, instead of sending his chauffeur, he picked me up himself and drove us up the mountains until we reached the summit.Pointing at the starry sky, he asked, "Do you like it?"I found the gesture amusing and teased, "Is the starry sky your gift?"He lowered his eyes, shook his head slightly, and pressed a finger to his lips. I instinctively fell silent.A second later, fireworks bloomed in brilliant, dazzling colors and lit up the night so much that I was momentarily breathless.I watched as Mason slowly dropped to one knee and produced a gemstone ring from his pocket. "Shelby, I know you don't love me yet, but I can wait."I curled my lips and asked, "What if you wait forever and it never happens?"His gaze was steady as he declared, "Then I'll just wait a lifetime."I held out my hand. As he slid the ring onto my finger, I closed my eyes, rose onto my toes, and gently brushed a

I turned to Mason for confirmation, only to catch a flicker of fear in his eyes, which caught me completely off guard. Could Mason, the untouchable heir of Jynxwood's elite family, actually feel afraid?Mason lowered his eyes. There was a faint, barely detectable tremor in his voice as he muttered, "Shelby, it's not too late if you're having second thoughts."I shook my head. Regardless of what he had done, it was ultimately Wayne's choices that had led us here.To me, this was just a marriage alliance, so I had never expected perfect morals and qualities from my partner.Mason visibly relaxed after he realized that I wasn't mad, but his expression faltered again. It dawned on him that I wasn't upset because I wasn't too concerned about what Wayne had said, and I didn't care about him either.Wayne panicked when he sensed my indifference. "You've always hated manipulative schemers the most, so why are you still marrying him?"You loved me so much, Shelby. Why can't you just giv

I shot Wayne a look of pure disgust and coldly said, "But you're filthy. Looking at you only makes me sick."The color drained from his face. His lips trembled, and for a moment, he seemed at a loss for words.Beside me, Mason chose that moment to deliver a merciless jab. "You're just a used-up, bottom-shelf scrap. Go home and take a look at yourself."I couldn't help but laugh at his words. Honestly, I hadn't expected Mason to have such a sharp, dry sense of humor.Wayne's face flushed a violent shade of red, then turned ghostly pale again. He balled his fists and hissed through gritted teeth, "Shelby and I have been in love for years, while you're nothing but a shameless homewrecker!"He didn't get to rant for long because soon, Mason motioned for his bodyguards to haul him out of the shopping mall.I thought that incident would be the end of it, and Wayne would finally quiet down. But to my surprise, he showed up again on the day of my engagement.Mason and I were greeting gu

I got out of the car, and the staff carried my luggage upstairs. After I followed Dad into his study, he solemnly handed me a share transfer agreement along with several property deeds."If you're ever unhappy, come home, and I'll take care of you for the rest of your life."All the grievances I had been holding back over the past few days finally crashed down on me. I burst into tears and was struck with the realization that my parents were the only people I could trust in this world.I thought about all the times I had fought them for Wayne, and overwhelming guilt drowned me.Dad seemed to see straight through my thoughts. He affectionately ruffled my hair and offered me endless understanding and tolerance.…A week later, I met Mason Frost, the heir to one of Jynxwood's elites.I had heard a lot about him, but back then, I despised marriages of convenience, which were built on interests and gain. I had been determined to find true love, only to end up paying for my mistakes

The next morning at the hospital, the doctor delivered the news that Valeria's foot was perfectly fine. Wayne let out a massive sigh of relief, while Maria planted her hands on her hips and started cursing."We have to kick that barren bitch out of the house! It's bad enough that she can't conceive, and now she's trying to kill our only heir! Keeping a vicious woman like her in the house will sooner or later bring us disaster."Valeria held the baby and pitifully sobbed. "Mrs. Donaldson just can't accept me and the baby, Mr Donaldson. We should just leave."Her nonstop crying grated on Wayne's nerves, though he softly comforted her and told her not to overthink it."Shelby will eventually accept you since she can't bear children herself. If she ever mistreats you again, I'll make sure she's driven out of the Donaldson family."With that, he walked up to the window, took out his phone, and typed a message."I'm giving you one last chance, Shelby. Apologize to Valeria, and I'll f
