Chapter 1

Author: Space Journey
On the third day after leaving the Donaldsons, I returned with a set of printed divorce papers, ready to get Wayne Donaldson sign them.

Once I stepped through the front door, a baby's laughter drifted through the air.

My in-laws were huddled around a newborn, beaming with affection. Meanwhile, Wayne wore a doting smile as he carefully cradled the baby in his arms. But when they finally spotted me standing at the door, all their smiles instantly vanished.

Wayne's expression stiffened when he looked up and saw me. His lips parted to say, "Shelby… you're back."

I didn't respond.

My mother-in-law, Maria Duncan, followed his gaze and looked up before her expression soured.

"As a barren wife, you've got a lot of nerve to throw a tantrum, Shelby. Try it again, and I'll make sure Wayne kicks you out of the Donaldsons for good."

Toying with the baby's tiny fingers, my father-in-law, Harold Donaldson, snorted. "As long as you behave, we'll make sure you keep your title as Mrs. Donaldson."

I almost laughed.

This was the man I had loved for five years, and the Donaldson family that rose into prominence and everything they were today, under the quiet support of my dad and me.

That was when Wayne's mistress, Valeria Meadows, approached me while holding the baby.

Tears glistened in her eyes as she looked at me timidly. "This is all my fault, Mrs. Donaldson. If I hadn't given birth to the baby, you and Mr. Donaldson wouldn't be fighting all day.

"Hit me, scold me; do whatever you need to get it out of your system. I just hope you'll stop fighting him."

I smiled and replied, "Oh, can I? Did you think I had no idea you slipped the drugs back then?"

Valeria's face flushed bright red at my words, as if she hadn't expected me to drag the ugly truth into the light.

For a split second, pure malice and jealousy flickered in her eyes before she suddenly pinched the baby hard. His piercing cries tore through the air.

Wayne rushed over at the noise and violently shoved me aside.

Stumbling back, I crashed into a vase. Porcelain shards cut into my palm, and blood trickled down my fingers, pooling onto the floor.

Valeria's eyes brimmed with tears as she pitifully wept. "I just wanted to show Mrs. Donaldson the baby, and I never thought she'd…"

When Wayne's cold gaze snapped to me, rage burned in his eyes. "Can't you even stand the sight of an innocent baby?"

Without another word, he grabbed my wrist and shoved me out the door. "Stay out there and think about what you've done, Shelby Moyers. Don't bother coming back until you've come to your senses!"

He had no idea that I was back to get a divorce, so several minutes of delay wouldn't change anything.

After being shut out, I sat on the steps and ran my fingers over the marble tiles of the villa, feeling utterly overwhelmed with emotions.

The Donaldsons might have forgotten that without me, they would never have reached the heights they enjoy today.

Wayne didn't die at the wedding and was rushed into an ambulance. The knife hadn't reached his heart, but he was badly injured.Perhaps that brush with death forced him to accept reality and let go for good, because I never saw him again for a long time after that.…After the wedding, Mason and I were inseparable. We fell deeply in love.My period didn't come for two months, so I bought a pregnancy test. I stared at the two lines with a heart full of conflicting emotions. For years, Maria and Harland had criticized me endlessly for my inability to conceive. I had carried that guilt toward Wayne and lived in a constant state of insecurity for fear that he would leave me just because I couldn't give him a child.Ironically, that fear became reality.I thought I would never have a child of my own, yet here I was, unexpectedly pregnant without even trying. When Mason found out, he immediately pressed his ear to my belly and warned, "You'd better be on your best behavior, little on

As the wedding date steadily approached, Mason and I grew closer with each passing day.One evening, instead of sending his chauffeur, he picked me up himself and drove us up the mountains until we reached the summit.Pointing at the starry sky, he asked, "Do you like it?"I found the gesture amusing and teased, "Is the starry sky your gift?"He lowered his eyes, shook his head slightly, and pressed a finger to his lips. I instinctively fell silent.A second later, fireworks bloomed in brilliant, dazzling colors and lit up the night so much that I was momentarily breathless.I watched as Mason slowly dropped to one knee and produced a gemstone ring from his pocket. "Shelby, I know you don't love me yet, but I can wait."I curled my lips and asked, "What if you wait forever and it never happens?"His gaze was steady as he declared, "Then I'll just wait a lifetime."I held out my hand. As he slid the ring onto my finger, I closed my eyes, rose onto my toes, and gently brushed a

I turned to Mason for confirmation, only to catch a flicker of fear in his eyes, which caught me completely off guard. Could Mason, the untouchable heir of Jynxwood's elite family, actually feel afraid?Mason lowered his eyes. There was a faint, barely detectable tremor in his voice as he muttered, "Shelby, it's not too late if you're having second thoughts."I shook my head. Regardless of what he had done, it was ultimately Wayne's choices that had led us here.To me, this was just a marriage alliance, so I had never expected perfect morals and qualities from my partner.Mason visibly relaxed after he realized that I wasn't mad, but his expression faltered again. It dawned on him that I wasn't upset because I wasn't too concerned about what Wayne had said, and I didn't care about him either.Wayne panicked when he sensed my indifference. "You've always hated manipulative schemers the most, so why are you still marrying him?"You loved me so much, Shelby. Why can't you just giv

I shot Wayne a look of pure disgust and coldly said, "But you're filthy. Looking at you only makes me sick."The color drained from his face. His lips trembled, and for a moment, he seemed at a loss for words.Beside me, Mason chose that moment to deliver a merciless jab. "You're just a used-up, bottom-shelf scrap. Go home and take a look at yourself."I couldn't help but laugh at his words. Honestly, I hadn't expected Mason to have such a sharp, dry sense of humor.Wayne's face flushed a violent shade of red, then turned ghostly pale again. He balled his fists and hissed through gritted teeth, "Shelby and I have been in love for years, while you're nothing but a shameless homewrecker!"He didn't get to rant for long because soon, Mason motioned for his bodyguards to haul him out of the shopping mall.I thought that incident would be the end of it, and Wayne would finally quiet down. But to my surprise, he showed up again on the day of my engagement.Mason and I were greeting gu

I got out of the car, and the staff carried my luggage upstairs. After I followed Dad into his study, he solemnly handed me a share transfer agreement along with several property deeds."If you're ever unhappy, come home, and I'll take care of you for the rest of your life."All the grievances I had been holding back over the past few days finally crashed down on me. I burst into tears and was struck with the realization that my parents were the only people I could trust in this world.I thought about all the times I had fought them for Wayne, and overwhelming guilt drowned me.Dad seemed to see straight through my thoughts. He affectionately ruffled my hair and offered me endless understanding and tolerance.…A week later, I met Mason Frost, the heir to one of Jynxwood's elites.I had heard a lot about him, but back then, I despised marriages of convenience, which were built on interests and gain. The next morning at the hospital, the doctor delivered the news that Valeria's foot was perfectly fine. Wayne let out a massive sigh of relief, while Maria planted her hands on her hips and started cursing."We have to kick that barren bitch out of the house! It's bad enough that she can't conceive, and now she's trying to kill our only heir! Keeping a vicious woman like her in the house will sooner or later bring us disaster."Valeria held the baby and pitifully sobbed. "Mrs. Donaldson just can't accept me and the baby, Mr Donaldson. We should just leave."Her nonstop crying grated on Wayne's nerves, though he softly comforted her and told her not to overthink it."Shelby will eventually accept you since she can't bear children herself. If she ever mistreats you again, I'll make sure she's driven out of the Donaldson family."With that, he walked up to the window, took out his phone, and typed a message."I'm giving you one last chance, Shelby.
