Chapter 3

Autor: Hyacinth
Three days before we were supposed to leave Silverpine, the pack academy held its annual Young Guardian Ceremony.

Ivy sat in the front row wearing a new dress and the dark green sash given to every finalist. Her hands rested neatly in her lap, but her eyes kept returning to the entrance.

For two weeks, she had worked on a painted panel for the ceremony. It showed a black wolf standing before a burning border, with Silverpine’s homes protected behind him. She had carved the title into the lower edge herself.

In the painting, Ronan’s black wolf had turned away from the burning border and was walking toward the pack gates. A small girl waited for him beneath the trees.

The Alpha Who Comes Home

Ronan had promised he would be there when the award was announced.

Ten minutes before the ceremony began, my phone lit up.

[The Council memorial committee called an emergency meeting. I may not make it.]

[Tell Ivy I am proud of her.]

I turned the screen facedown before she could see it.

Ivy looked toward the door again. “Maybe he is only late.”

I did not answer. She had already learned to protect him from disappointment by giving him excuses.

The hall filled quickly. Pack elders occupied the first section, academy instructors stood along the walls, and families gathered behind the finalists. Dark green banners above the stage carried the names of warriors who had died defending Silverpine.

Caleb’s name appeared among them.

The host presented several smaller awards before reaching the final category.

“And now, the Young Guardian Award.”

Ivy’s fingers tightened around her skirt.

“The Young Guardian Award goes to The Alpha Who Comes Home.”

Ivy rose before I could stop her, and her painted panel appeared on the screen behind the stage. The pine trees, the border fire, and Ronan’s black wolf filled the hall exactly as she had painted them.

The host continued before anyone called Ivy to the stage.

“By order of the memorial committee, Noah Hale will accept the medal in honor of Silverpine’s fallen warriors.”

Ivy remained standing, her smile disappearing as Noah’s name echoed through the hall.

Her signature remained in the lower corner of the painting, but Mara rose from the family section, adjusted Noah’s academy jacket, and guided him toward the podium.

Two parents behind us began whispering before the applause had even settled.

“But Ivy painted that.”

“Then why is Noah receiving her medal? Did the academy change the winner after the results were submitted?”

Ivy waited several seconds for someone to correct the announcement. No one did. She slowly sat down and pressed both palms against her knees while Noah walked beneath her painting to receive the medal she had expected to earn.

I crossed the aisle and approached the instructor responsible for registering the entries.

“I want to see the original file for that work.”

The instructor hesitated, then led me to a side table. Ivy’s sketches, submission date, and instructor approval were all there. Her name remained in the archive, but the ceremony order listed Noah as the memorial representative.

The authorization line carried Ronan’s signature.

“Alpha Ronan approved the change yesterday,” the instructor said quietly. “Noah has been isolated since the incomplete shift. Some of the other children are afraid of him, and the memorial committee believed this recognition could help him return to class.”

“He did not create the work.”

“No. Your daughter remains the recorded artist. The Alpha only approved Noah as the memorial representative and transferred the medal to him.”

“Without asking Ivy.”

The instructor lowered her eyes.

Mara came down from the stage while Noah waited near the podium.

“This was Ronan’s decision,” she said. “I did not ask him to change the ceremony.”

“Then ask the academy to return the medal to its winner.”

Mara glanced toward Noah.

“Ivy still has a stable home and another chance to compete. Noah needed to know the pack no longer saw him as dangerous.”

“He could have been honored without using Ivy’s work.”

I turned back to the instructor. “The permanent record must state that Ivy created the winning entry and that the public honor was transferred by Alpha order.”

She nodded and added the note to the archive.

On stage, Noah accepted the gold medal while Mara thanked Silverpine for remembering Caleb’s sacrifice. The academy photographer captured him standing in front of Ivy’s painting.

When I returned to my seat, Ivy had removed the finalist sash from her dress.

Before the ceremony ended, a side door opened, and Ronan stepped out from backstage.

For one second, I thought he had just arrived. Then the healer beside him said that Noah had remained stable throughout the ceremony.

Ronan had been there from the beginning. While Ivy watched the entrance for him, he had stayed backstage with Noah.

“Elena, I planned to explain after the ceremony.”

“You should explain to Ivy.”

Ronan looked at our daughter.

“Noah has been struggling. The memorial committee wanted to remind him that the pack has not forgotten his father.”

Ivy looked toward the stage. “Did you give him my medal?”

“Your name is still in the academy archive. I only approved Noah as the memorial representative.”

“But he got the medal.”

“You are talented, Ivy. You will win again. Noah needed this one.”

She placed the finalist sash in Ronan’s palm.

“Then give him this too.”

Ronan’s hand closed around it.

“Ivy, I did not take your work away.”

“You took the part you promised to watch.”

She took my hand and walked toward the exit.

Ronan called her name, but she did not stop.

During the drive home, Ivy watched the trees pass outside the window. She kept her shoulders straight until the academy disappeared behind us.

“Mom, do we have to wait fifteen days?”

“No.”

“Can we leave tonight?”

I took her hand. “Yes.”

That evening, I contacted the Northern Crown and moved our departure forward. The royal court responded within the hour. An escort already traveling near Silverpine could reach the northern border before midnight, and Ivy’s place at Northern Crown Academy was confirmed.

I packed the remaining documents, her medicine, the old stuffed wolf, and the grooming brush she had saved from Hazel’s stall. Ivy folded her academy uniform without asking whether she would wear it again. When the suitcase was full, she placed her school journal on top and closed the lid herself.

Ronan messaged while I closed the final suitcase.

[I will be home tomorrow.]

[I will explain everything to Ivy, and I will have the academy issue another medal.]

A third message followed.

[Do not teach her to resent Noah for this.]

I placed my phone beside the travel papers and closed the last suitcase.

I checked the time. The Northern Crown escort would reach the border in two hours. By the time Ronan came home tomorrow, Ivy and I would already be gone.

Trust returns when the people closest to them respect their choices.”Applause filled the room.I had become Northern Crown’s chief healer, established a treatment center for traumatized young wolves, and reclaimed the name Elena Vale.Ronan sat in the last row.He was still Silverpine’s Alpha. After the Council investigation, he lost direct control over survivor benefits and memorial funds. Silverpine now required independent approval for every payment.None of that changed my decision. Our mate bond had been dissolved a year earlier. After the conference, a Council liaison found me backstage.“Ronan’s visitation request passed final review.”“Did Ivy a

Three days later, Silverpine held its annual memorial assembly for fallen warriors. The names of those who had died protecting the pack covered the wall behind the stage. Caleb’s was among them. Elders, guards, surviving families, and Council representatives filled the hall. Mara sat in the front row wearing Caleb’s dark coat. She had been scheduled to speak for the families and confirm Noah’s support for the coming year. After the memorial silence, the pack finance officer approached the podium.“Before next year’s support is approved, the Council must report an investigation involving survivor funds.”The screen displayed Mara’s expenses from the past three years. Several clinic bills had been issued after the clinics had closed. Medicine had been charged more than once but never collected. Noah’s therapy appointments had repeatedly been canceled, while Mara requested additional money and Ronan’s personal attendance whenever his condition worsened. Some funds meant for treatment had

After Mara left, Ronan remained in Ivy’s room with the unused training bow across his knees. Her assignments lay scattered on the floor, each page recording a choice he had once called reasonable. His phone vibrated.Because Elena had filed to dissolve their mate bond, the pack finance officer was reviewing expenses tied to the Alpha household. Several payments made in Mara’s name could not be classified. There were housing costs, private clinic bills, treatment fees, and repeated transfers from Ronan’s personal account. Hazel’s transport and boarding costs appeared among them. For three years, Ronan had approved whatever Mara requested whenever she said Noah’s condition could not wait. One invoice was dated the day after Ivy’s birthday. It claimed Noah had received emergency shift-control treatment at a private clinic. That night, Mara had said Noah might lose control again, so Ronan had stayed until morning. He did not recognize the clinic. The next day, he went to the pack clinic.T

Elena’s medical case was gone, along with Ivy’s cloak. The living room had been cleaned so carefully that the silence felt deliberate.Elena’s side of the wardrobe was empty. There was no letter, only a dark folder on the desk.Inside were the Northern Crown summons, Ivy’s approved transfer to Northern Crown Academy, and a copy of Elena’s appointment as the court’s next chief healer. The emergency doors were about to close when Ivy opened her eyes. She looked at me through the oxygen mask and moved her lips. She was trying to say Mom.No sound came out. Then the doors closed between us.Two hours later, the emergency room doors opened. The healer on duty stepped into the corridor and removed her gloves.“Ivy is out of immediate danger. She inhaled a large amount of wolfsbane smoke. Her airways are inflamed, and her right leg is badly bruised, but nothing is broken.”My fingers finally loosened.“Why can’t she speak?”“Her vocal cords are not damaged. Physically, she should be able to produce sound. This appears to be trauma-related mutism caused by extreme fear. Her mind still believes she is in danger.”“How long will it last?”“Days or months. No one can say yet. She needs safety, stability, and no further emotional shocks.”Footsteps pounded down the corridor.Ronan appeared with ash on his coat and red wolfsbane burns across his hands and neck. At ten that night, I left the Alpha residence with Ivy.Two suitcases were in the trunk, while the Northern Crown travel papers and Ivy’s medical records were in my bag. The escort would reach Silverpine’s northern gate before midnight. We only needed to collect winter medicine and our exit permits at the transit station.Ivy sat in the back seat with her old stuffed wolf in her arms. Streetlights slid across the window, but she never looked back at the house where we had lived for seven years.“Is the north far away?” she asked.“It will take a few days by car.”“Will anyone there know me?”“Your grandfather will. He has been waiting a long time.”The transit station was still busy. Patrol teams, travelers, and supply vehicles passed through its inspection area before reaching the border road.Ivy stopped as we crossed the rest area.Through the restaurant window, I saw Ronan.Noah sat beside him with the medal from the ceremony still around his neck.
