Chapter 2

Author: Lara Dimson
Sienna had a way of keeping Nathan's attention. When he was with her, he rarely checked his phone, and anything I sent him usually went unanswered until the next morning.

I was done waiting.

The HR manager hesitated, but given my position in the company, she placed the call anyway.

"Mr. Sinclair, it's about Mrs. Sinclair. She wants to—"

Nathan cut her off before she could finish, his voice sharp and irritated.

"Whatever she wants, handle it according to protocol. That's your job, isn't it? Do I really need to walk you through your own job?"

It was obvious he was still angry about my comment on Sienna's post.

The HR manager didn't say another word.

Nathan added, "And from now on, if it's not urgent, send a message. Stop calling me."

The line went dead.

But in the split second before he hung up, I heard Sienna's voice in the background, soft and teasing.

"Nathan, you sound so stressed. Was that your wife calling again?"

The HR manager's face tightened, and she looked at me with something close to pity, though her tone stayed carefully neutral.

"You heard him. Take the letter back and we'll pretend this never happened. I won't say a word to anyone."

She didn't believe I was actually resigning. In her mind, this was just another one of my attempts to get Nathan's attention, a way of forcing him to notice me.

And honestly, who could blame her for thinking that? Nathan and I had been married for eight years. We had built Sinclair Group together from the ground up. No one would ever expect me to walk away from it.

I pushed the letter closer to her.

"Please process it according to company policy."

She blinked, clearly startled, and tried to talk me out of it a few more times. When she realized I wasn't backing down, she finally stamped the resignation letter and started the handover process.

Word spread through the office within minutes.

Most people assumed the same thing—that I was using the resignation as leverage and it had backfired.

I didn't bother correcting them. I gathered my things and walked out without looking back.

I hadn't even reached the elevator when the HR manager came running after me, waving her phone.

"Wait—Mr. Sinclair just called. He wants to speak to you."

The hallway went quiet.

Someone nearby whispered, "Who would've thought? Playing hard to get actually worked. He fell for it after all."

I stopped and took the phone from her hand.

The speaker was on. Nathan's voice carried clearly to everyone standing nearby, and his first words were an accusation.

"Why didn't you answer when I called? What if I'd needed something important? Are you planning to take responsibility if something gets missed?"

"Head over to Sienna's place and grab the document off her living room table. She forgot it in her apartment. A client downtown is waiting for it, so take care of it."

Silence fell over the hallway, followed by the quiet ripple of suppressed laughter.

I held the phone loosely in my hand, and for a moment, I felt nothing but cold clarity.

I had known for a long time that Nathan no longer treated me with any real respect, but hearing it like this—in front of everyone—still sent a chill through me.

Not long ago, in order to make it easier for Sienna to give me orders, Nathan had promoted her to a position equal to mine. He called it "collaborative leadership," but in reality, it just meant that any work Sienna didn't feel like doing got dumped on my desk.

Now that news of my resignation had presumably reached him, he was still ordering me around like I was her errand girl.

I let out a quiet, bitter laugh and, for the first time in eight years, I refused to swallow my pride for the sake of keeping this unequal marriage intact.

"Why would it be my responsibility to handle Sienna's work?"

There was a pause on the other end, like the question had caught him off guard.

Before he could recover, I added, "Also, I don't have the time. Whoever forgot the file can go get it themselves."

I hung up and handed the phone back to the HR manager.

Then, as the entire office watched in stunned disbelief, I walked straight out through the front doors.

A short distance past the building's entrance, I stopped and turned back for a moment to look at the office that had been part of my life for eight years.

Through the glass, I could see into Nathan's office on the top floor. The orchid I had given him on our first anniversary sat on the windowsill, brown and dried out. Beside it, a succulent Sienna had brought him last month was thriving, bright and green.

I smiled quietly to myself, pulled out my phone, and made a call.

"That project you mentioned before—I've thought it over."

"I'm in."

Nathan left without finishing whatever he'd been about to say, walking quickly back toward his car.I found out what happened later that week.Sienna had been systematically draining money from Sinclair Group's accounts for months. By the time Nathan's accountant caught it, she'd already transferred close to 30 million dollars and disappeared. The missing funds had triggered a chain reaction—vendors demanding immediate payment, investors pulling out, projects stalling mid-development.Everyone in the company had known how much Nathan trusted her. He'd given her access to nearly everything, which meant any transfer she initiated went through without a second look. She'd managed it all with very little effort.I also learned there had been a chance to stop it.When Sienna tried to move the largest sum, the bank had flagged it for review and sent Nathan an alert. If he'd been checking his email even once a day, he would have seen it in time. But he hadn't been to the office in almost a mo

The man beside me was Adrian Chen—CEO of a tech company that had been competing with Sinclair Group for the past two years. We'd met at an industry conference three weeks ago, right after I'd started my new job, and hit it off immediately over shared frustrations about inefficient project management systems. We'd gotten coffee twice since then, and last week he'd asked me to dinner. I'd said yes. When Nathan saw Adrian, the color drained from his face."You're—"Adrian nodded, his arm still resting casually around my shoulders."Sophie's boyfriend. We've actually met before—last year's tech summit. You were on the panel about startup scaling."Nathan's eyes went wide, then narrowed."You? What gives you the right to be with Sophie?"He was trying to assert dominance, to make Adrian feel small. It didn't work. Adrian's smile stayed easy and unbothered."What gives me the right? The fact that we like each other and chose to spend time together. Does there need to be more than that?""The

It was just after work, and I had plans to meet a friend for drinks. As I walked through the lobby doors, I spotted Nathan standing near the parking garage entrance. He'd lost weight. The man who used to obsess over his appearance was standing there with dark circles under both eyes, looking exhausted and worn down—so much so that for a second I almost didn't recognize him.The moment he saw me, he moved quickly in my direction. Before I could step back, he reached out and grabbed my hand."Sophie, do you really hate me this much? Enough that you won't even reply to a single message?""Do you have any idea what the last few weeks have been like for me?""I'm not making this up. I really do miss you."His voice cracked, and tears started sliding down his face as he spoke. In the past, every time he cried, the sight of it would break me and I'd give in immediately. This time, I just pulled my hand free and kept my expression neutral."I don't hate you."Before any hope could settle in hi

Nathan's voice came through the speaker."Sophie, you've made your point. Can we just stop this now? Please?""I know all of this—the resignation, everything—was because of Sienna. I've already let her go just now. So we're good, right?""I promise, when you come back, I'll not only give you a raise, I'll also—"The director was still sitting beside me in the passenger seat, half-asleep against the window. The second he heard the word raise, his eyes shot open like someone had dumped ice water on him. He sat up, reached over, and grabbed the phone right out of my hand."Forget it—Sophie's already signed with us. We're giving her the best package in the industry. You're not getting her back."Before Nathan could respond, the director ended the call and blocked the number. He hadn't even handed the phone back to me before he slumped against the seat again and passed out.I didn't know whether to laugh or be annoyed. I pulled the phone from his hand and put it in my bag.Nathan and I had

Just as I expected, his composure cracked. He opened his mouth to defend himself, but I already knew what he was going to say, so I kept going."Even if the inn really was fully booked, is this the only place to stay around here?""Do you remember, Nathan, when we went to Portland right after we started dating? We ran into the same problem. Do you remember what you did?""You walked me through half the city looking for a room. I was exhausted, and I told you I didn't mind sleeping on the couch. You said no immediately.""You told me that a man with integrity doesn't put himself in compromising situations that could be misunderstood. You said that until we were married, you would make sure you never crossed a line.""So why are you standing in that compromising situation now?"By the time I finished, Nathan's face had gone completely white."Is there something else you wanted to talk about? I'm happy to keep going."Nathan didn't have an answer. He worked his jaw for a moment, then fina

I didn't see the point in staying any longer, so I turned and walked away, clenching my injured hand. The young man from the inn followed after me, clearly worried."You should really treat that hand. Burns can get infected fast."I shook my head."I have a first aid kit in my room. I'll be fine."Nathan had always been clumsy, constantly scraping his knuckles or burning himself on coffee cups, and after the third or fourth time I'd patched him up, I'd gotten into the habit of carrying first-aid supplies with me wherever I went. Besides, I'd burned myself plenty of times before—back when I was teaching myself to cook the way he liked. The young man looked like he wanted to say something else but held back. When we reached my door, he glanced down the hallway to make sure no one was nearby, then lowered his voice."Look, it's not really my business, but there's something I think you should know.""I saw what happened out there just now. And the timing with the divorce papers—I did that
