Chapter 1

Author: Lara Dimson
As I stepped out of the elevator into the office, the TV on the wall was still playing Sienna's story on a loop.

On the screen, Nathan Sinclair, my husband and CEO, had his arm wrapped around the waist of his personal assistant, Sienna Marsh.

Two juniors at the reception were flipping cards onto the counter, betting on what punishment Nathan would hand me this time.

"This time he’ll transfer her to the lower division branch by Monday. Mark my words."

"No way. He'll make her apologize to Sienna in front of the whole floor again, like last spring."

When they noticed me behind them, one of them grabbed the remote and switched the television off. They both lowered their heads, but the mockery never left their eyes.

None of it surprised me anymore.

It had long been known around the building that Nathan was shamelessly partial to Sienna.

He had created her position out of thin air, pushed out his senior assistant of eleven years to make room for her and poured the best projects into her hands.

Every time she caused serious damage to the company, he found excuses to cover for her and praise her.

Once, Nathan handed Sienna the client list I had spent half a year compiling for Sinclair Group.

Within a month, she sent it to the wrong email address. It landed in the rival's inbox.

By the end of the quarter they had taken more than half our clients, and the company lost half of the year's profit.

Nathan gave her the Outstanding Employee of the Year award in front of the whole company, then had her office renovated from floor to ceiling. He said a young employee who had just been through such a shock needed encouragement, not punishment.

My own office had been leaking for three months. I had asked him to fix it several times, but he never once bothered.

During that same period, I forgot to sign the last page of an internal memo. No client had seen it, and it hadn't cost the company a single cent.

Nathan cut off my allowance and took back the company car. He said everyone was watching us, that the company could go down if the public thought he was partial to his wife, and he had an image to protect.

So I stood at the bus stop at six in the morning, arrived soaked when it rained and late when the traffic stalled, and every time I was late he wrote it down.

The next month, Sienna posted a photo of herself leaning against my car in the office parking lot.

"Thank you for the car, Nathan. You always know when someone needs a little help."

I went straight into his office. "Did you give my company car to Sienna?"

He barely looked up from his laptop.

"Sophie, she fainted in the elevator last week. Do you want her to keep taking the subway in that condition?"

"And you've put on a little weight lately. The walking will do you good."

I stood there without another word, and after a moment he sighed and softened his voice.

"Alright. You've been tense lately. This week is Halloween. I'll book the private haunted mansion you've always wanted to go to. Just us. I promise."

But ever since Sienna joined the company, no plan Nathan made with me had survived a full evening.

On the night of our fifth anniversary, I sat in the restaurant he had booked until the waiters started stacking chairs around me. The call came at eleven. Sienna's landlord had changed her locks and she had nowhere to sleep, so he had driven across the city to sort it out.

The morning my mother went in for surgery, he promised he would be at the hospital before she woke up. He never came. Sienna's cat had stopped eating, and he spent the whole day at the vet with her while I sat outside the ward alone.

After that, I stopped listening whenever he said just us.

But this Halloween was different. He came home with two costumes in garment bags. He bought tickets for the haunted mansion night at the old theatre, gave his driver the evening off, and put a red line through the date in his calendar so his secretary would not book anything over it.

Against every ounce of common sense, I trusted him one more time.

I spent the whole evening getting ready, looking at the time every few minutes with my heart actually excited for the first time in years.

And of course, he let me down again.

The two juniors at reception were still watching me from the corner of their eyes, waiting for the show. I walked past them straight into HR.

The manager was halfway through her lunch. I slid the resignation letter I had printed a month ago across the desk.

She froze in shock. "You're resigning?"

I nodded.

She was already sliding it under the pile of papers at the edge of her desk. I pulled it back out and pushed it an inch closer to her. "Call him."

Nathan left without finishing whatever he'd been about to say, walking quickly back toward his car.I found out what happened later that week.Sienna had been systematically draining money from Sinclair Group's accounts for months. By the time Nathan's accountant caught it, she'd already transferred close to 30 million dollars and disappeared. The missing funds had triggered a chain reaction—vendors demanding immediate payment, investors pulling out, projects stalling mid-development.Everyone in the company had known how much Nathan trusted her. He'd given her access to nearly everything, which meant any transfer she initiated went through without a second look. She'd managed it all with very little effort.I also learned there had been a chance to stop it.When Sienna tried to move the largest sum, the bank had flagged it for review and sent Nathan an alert. If he'd been checking his email even once a day, he would have seen it in time. But he hadn't been to the office in almost a mo

The man beside me was Adrian Chen—CEO of a tech company that had been competing with Sinclair Group for the past two years. We'd met at an industry conference three weeks ago, right after I'd started my new job, and hit it off immediately over shared frustrations about inefficient project management systems. We'd gotten coffee twice since then, and last week he'd asked me to dinner. I'd said yes. When Nathan saw Adrian, the color drained from his face."You're—"Adrian nodded, his arm still resting casually around my shoulders."Sophie's boyfriend. We've actually met before—last year's tech summit. You were on the panel about startup scaling."Nathan's eyes went wide, then narrowed."You? What gives you the right to be with Sophie?"He was trying to assert dominance, to make Adrian feel small. It didn't work. Adrian's smile stayed easy and unbothered."What gives me the right? The fact that we like each other and chose to spend time together. Does there need to be more than that?""The

It was just after work, and I had plans to meet a friend for drinks. As I walked through the lobby doors, I spotted Nathan standing near the parking garage entrance. He'd lost weight. The man who used to obsess over his appearance was standing there with dark circles under both eyes, looking exhausted and worn down—so much so that for a second I almost didn't recognize him.The moment he saw me, he moved quickly in my direction. Before I could step back, he reached out and grabbed my hand."Sophie, do you really hate me this much? Enough that you won't even reply to a single message?""Do you have any idea what the last few weeks have been like for me?""I'm not making this up. I really do miss you."His voice cracked, and tears started sliding down his face as he spoke. In the past, every time he cried, the sight of it would break me and I'd give in immediately. This time, I just pulled my hand free and kept my expression neutral."I don't hate you."Before any hope could settle in hi

Nathan's voice came through the speaker."Sophie, you've made your point. Can we just stop this now? Please?""I know all of this—the resignation, everything—was because of Sienna. I've already let her go just now. So we're good, right?""I promise, when you come back, I'll not only give you a raise, I'll also—"The director was still sitting beside me in the passenger seat, half-asleep against the window. The second he heard the word raise, his eyes shot open like someone had dumped ice water on him. He sat up, reached over, and grabbed the phone right out of my hand."Forget it—Sophie's already signed with us. We're giving her the best package in the industry. You're not getting her back."Before Nathan could respond, the director ended the call and blocked the number. He hadn't even handed the phone back to me before he slumped against the seat again and passed out.I didn't know whether to laugh or be annoyed. I pulled the phone from his hand and put it in my bag.Nathan and I had

Just as I expected, his composure cracked. He opened his mouth to defend himself, but I already knew what he was going to say, so I kept going."Even if the inn really was fully booked, is this the only place to stay around here?""Do you remember, Nathan, when we went to Portland right after we started dating? We ran into the same problem. Do you remember what you did?""You walked me through half the city looking for a room. I was exhausted, and I told you I didn't mind sleeping on the couch. You said no immediately.""You told me that a man with integrity doesn't put himself in compromising situations that could be misunderstood. You said that until we were married, you would make sure you never crossed a line.""So why are you standing in that compromising situation now?"By the time I finished, Nathan's face had gone completely white."Is there something else you wanted to talk about? I'm happy to keep going."Nathan didn't have an answer. He worked his jaw for a moment, then fina

I didn't see the point in staying any longer, so I turned and walked away, clenching my injured hand. The young man from the inn followed after me, clearly worried."You should really treat that hand. Burns can get infected fast."I shook my head."I have a first aid kit in my room. I'll be fine."Nathan had always been clumsy, constantly scraping his knuckles or burning himself on coffee cups, and after the third or fourth time I'd patched him up, I'd gotten into the habit of carrying first-aid supplies with me wherever I went. Besides, I'd burned myself plenty of times before—back when I was teaching myself to cook the way he liked. The young man looked like he wanted to say something else but held back. When we reached my door, he glanced down the hallway to make sure no one was nearby, then lowered his voice."Look, it's not really my business, but there's something I think you should know.""I saw what happened out there just now. And the timing with the divorce papers—I did that
