Chapter 2

Author: Jade
Cassian, Nora, Theo and I grew up together.

Back then, Nora used to joke that because we were best friends, we should all take our mates on the same day.

No one objected. We even promised that we would always stay together.

The meeting ended. Theo came over and stopped in front of us.

"Cassian, Nora and I have agreed that on the day of the Full Moon Ceremony, when we come of age, we'll enter the Moon Temple and receive the Moon Goddess's blessing. It only happens once in our lives. I want to spend it with her."

Nora's ears went red, and she gave Theo a look, half scolding and entirely pleased.

Theo looked Cassian dead in the eye, his meaning plain. "Cassian, do you want to come with us?"

The wolves who had not yet dispersed stopped where they were, their eyes moving between the four of us.

Everyone knew that Cassian and I had grown up side by side, and the whole pack took it for granted that we would be the next Alpha and his Luna.

But Cassian only gave a soft laugh. "If it only happens once in a lifetime, how could I intrude on a ceremony meant for just the two of you?"

He turned his head, his dark eyes settling on me. "Evelina is remarkable. She deserves a grander ceremony, one that belongs to her alone, not one she has to share with someone else. Don't you think?"

The smile I had put on froze on my face. Listening to Cassian's false consideration with the refusal buried inside it, I felt like a clown.

He knew. He knew that if I was not marked by a mate at the Full Moon Ceremony, my body would grow weaker and weaker until I died on my nineteenth birthday. Yet he refused anyway.

A little way off, Lilith raised an eyebrow. Her gaze slid past Cassian and landed on me, taunting.

Nora's face went dark in an instant. She snorted, grabbed Theo, and walked off without turning her head once.

Awkward silence spread through the air. Yet Cassian acted as if nothing had happened and took my hand. "Come on. I'll walk you home."

"Cassian..." I had not even started when I saw Lilith come over, timid. "It's so late, and my house is in the most remote part of the pack. I'd be scared walking back alone. Could you..."

Cassian's steps stopped. I thought he would refuse. He was holding my hand, after all. But he only tightened his grip a little, his tone matter-of-fact. "It's on the way. I'll take Evelina home first, then you."

At that, Lilith smiled. "I knew you were the kindest wolf there is, Cassian."

The whole way, Cassian held my hand but kept his body turned toward Lilith. Lilith seemed to have an endless supply of things to say, from herbs in the forest to the shape of the clouds that day. Cassian listened to every trivial, dull detail of it with real interest, tilting his head down now and then to agree, letting out a pleased little laugh or two.

I walked beside them in silence until they were so absorbed in each other that they were about to walk straight past my gate. Only then did I plant my feet and stop.

"This is me."

Cassian snapped back to himself. He looked at the gate in front of him and a flicker of embarrassment crossed his eyes. "Sorry. I got carried away talking. I almost walked right past it."

Cassian's expression smoothed over. He reached up and tidied the hair the wind had blown across my face. "Stay home and rest. I'll come find you once I've taken Lilith back."

Lilith stuck her tongue out at me, apologetic.

"Evelina, don't be angry. I didn't mean to take up so much of Cassian's time."

I shook my head and went inside without a word. Behind the door, Cassian and Lilith's voices faded away. I leaned against it, and my heart seized with a violent, twisting pain.

Had the curse already begun to take effect?

Silas gave Lilith no chance to say more. A wolf who betrays the pack is exiled, and no other pack would take her in. Her only possible fate was life as a rogue, facing mortal danger every day.Silas waved a hand and Lilith was taken away. The other wolves scattered, leaving only Cassian, who now understood how all of it had happened, a necklace still clenched in his hand, looking at me helplessly. He had grown much thinner, his jaw covered in dark stubble. "Evelina, do you still remember this stone?" Cassian looked at me with hope. "You promised me you'd be my mate. I didn't know Lilith was a traitor. I've done nothing but go over my own mistakes these past few days, and I know I was wrong. Can we start over? I'll give up the Alpha position. I only want to be beside you."I looked at how small he had made himself and sighed. "Cassian, I buried that stone outside the Moon Temple a long time ago, and everything we had along with it. I almost died. How could I ever forgive that? Stop foll

Caught off guard, Lilith went sprawling when Cassian shoved her away. Her eyes immediately filled with tears. "That hurts..."Only then did Cassian come back to himself."Lilith, I didn't mean to." He said it, but he did not reach out to help her up.Something vicious flashed in Lilith's eyes, but she kept up her fragile act as she struggled to her feet. "I know, Cassian. You just love Evelina too much, the way I love you."Cassian froze, then shook his head. "Lilith, I don't love you. I took care of you out of sympathy for someone weaker. I hope you can understand that.""I'll stay by your side no matter what. Even if I can never be your mate officially, I'm willing." Lilith lifted her head and looked at him with forced courage. Cassian could no longer stand the heat in her eyes and stumbled away.Watching him go, Lilith ground the words out. "Evelina. Why do you always ruin everything for me?"Cassian came looking for me several more times after that, and every time I kept him outsid

Cassian rounded on me in disbelief. "Evelina, if you wanted to make me jealous, you didn't have to degrade yourself by taking another wolf as your mate. I know you couldn't have wanted this. Break the bond with him now, and we can honor the promise we made.""Oh, so you do remember you had a promise with her." Nora charged over and shoved Cassian so hard he stumbled."Or have you forgotten who gave the potion that could have eased Evelina's curse to a lowborn Omega? Who accused her of faking it when the curse struck and walked away without looking back? Who insisted on leaving the pack for days with a she-wolf who is nothing to you, right before the Full Moon Ceremony, abandoning Evelina here without caring whether she lived or died?"Listening to Nora hurl those questions at him in front of nearly every wolf in the pack, Cassian's face went completely rigid."Nora, this is between Evelina and me." He stepped forward again. "Evelina, I can explain. What happened with Lilith was..."I c

Silas was good to me. In all the days Cassian was away from the pack, he was the one who took care of me.The first time Nora saw Silas at my house, treating my wounds, she was too shocked to get a word out. "Evelina, what is Silas doing in your house? Doesn't he always keep to himself?"Silas's hands did not stop. "She didn't tell you? I'm going to be her mate soon."Nora looked from me to Silas. "Evelina, you know what a mate bond means, don't you? I don't want you choosing some wolf you barely know just because of Cassian."Silas raised his head. "I'm not some wolf she barely knows. I've wanted Evelina for a long time."Before I could recover from my shock, he took my hand and looked at Nora with complete seriousness. "I'll prove it to you. I deserve Evelina more than Cassian does, and I'll always treat her well."In the days that followed, Silas practically moved into my house. He gave me every rare gemstone he acquired, and he also looked after Nora and Theo. Even Theo, who had al

When Cassian returned from the forest with Lilith, he arrived just in time for that night's Full Moon Ceremony. But the moment they entered the pack, the atmosphere felt strangely wrong."Did you hear? Today is a big day for Evelina and Nora. They get to choose their mates on the very day they come of age. Just hearing about it makes me jealous."The passing wolves were all talking about it, but the moment they saw Cassian, they gave him a strange look, half pity and half mockery.Cassian straightened his slightly rumpled collar, a helpless smile at the corner of his mouth. "Evelina is being absurd."He complained under his breath to Lilith, though he could not quite hide the smugness in his voice. "She's so desperate to make us official that she turned it into a spectacle. Now every wolf in the pack knows."Lilith bit her lip, resentment flashing in her eyes. "Cassian, Evelina is forcing your hand..."At that, a rush of anger surged up in Cassian's chest. He lifted his head and looked

The gentleness on Cassian's face vanished all at once. Impatience showed in his eyes."Evelina, that's enough. I admit I treated you unfairly over the potion, but you don't have to make a scene just to get attention. And now you're wasting food. That bread was Lilith's way of being kind. This isn't like you."I fought down the pain in my body and reached for him. "Cassian... it hurts so much... it's the curse... the curse is starting."Cassian did not gather me up the way he always had. He looked down at me from above, his eyes full of scrutiny and doubt."Evelina, your acting has really improved. The curse doesn't take effect until the day of your coming of age. The ceremony is three days away. You'd make up a lie like this just to keep me here?"Everything in front of me went white and started spinning, and still I reached out and caught the hem of his clothes."I don't know, Cassian, just stay with me, please...""Enough." Cassian stood up and pulled hard. My hand lost its hold and
