Chapter 3

Author: Jade
I clutched my chest and gasped for air, too weak even to reach Nora through the mind-link, though she lived nearby.

Shaking, I felt for the half stone hidden under my clothes.

At last year's Full Moon Ceremony, Cassian and I had not yet come of age, so we could only take part from the shadows outside the Moon Temple.

But in front of the temple we found two stones that fit together into a heart.

Nora had been beside herself with excitement then. "This proves the Moon Goddess blesses you! This is her will!"

Cassian took the cord he always carried and made the two stones into two necklaces, and handed one of them to me.

"Nora's right. This is the Moon Goddess's will. Evelina, next year's Full Moon Ceremony will be the day we become mates. You'll wear my necklace, and I'll mark you."

With Nora and Theo watching and teasing, I blushed and let Cassian fasten the necklace around my neck.

"Then it's settled. Next year, when we're all old enough to enter the Moon Temple, we go in together!" Nora said.

Four hands stacked on top of each other and sealed the promise.

From that day on, I practically counted down the days on my fingers, willing time to move faster and faster so I could become Cassian's mate.

Thinking back on Cassian's tactful refusal that day, I began to wonder whether he had cast our promise aside. The stone was cold, as if it were mocking me for reading too much into it.

I thought and thought, and drifted off on the couch, until I heard the sound of the door opening in the entryway.

Cassian had come back at some point, a box in his hand.

"You barely ate anything today, so I brought you something."

He sat down beside me as if nothing had happened and slipped an arm around my waist, but I eased out of his hold without making a show of it.

Cassian's hand stalled. Then he reached over and felt my forehead.

"Why are you sleeping on the couch? Are you feeling sick? Or are you still angry that I gave Lilith the potion? She barely slept for days so the whole pack would be properly supplied. I was afraid she'd collapse, and then we'd have to trouble the healer again."

I pressed my lips together, listened to his perfectly reasonable explanation, and nodded calmly. "I know. You're the Alpha's heir. Of course you look after the weak ones in the pack."

My answer visibly lifted his mood. He reached out and opened the box in his hand.

"Here, eat something. Lilith says this bakery has the best bread. She told me to recommend it to you too. She said something sweet puts you in a better mood."

Cassian broke off a piece of bread and held it out to me, his eyes full of expectation.

I looked at that piece of bread and my stomach turned over.

"She really has it hard," Cassian sighed to himself.

"She's so weak she can't even lift a wooden crate, yet she still pushes herself to work. Evelina, teach her a few things when you have time. She's always looked up to you..."

Listening to him work Lilith into everything he said, the wrongness in my body grew worse. My whole body burned like fire, and I began to shake violently.

Thud.

I did not catch the bread he was holding out to me.

The food Lilith had recommended so highly landed on the carpet in a sorry heap, rolled twice, and picked up dust.

Silas gave Lilith no chance to say more. A wolf who betrays the pack is exiled, and no other pack would take her in. Her only possible fate was life as a rogue, facing mortal danger every day.Silas waved a hand and Lilith was taken away. The other wolves scattered, leaving only Cassian, who now understood how all of it had happened, a necklace still clenched in his hand, looking at me helplessly. He had grown much thinner, his jaw covered in dark stubble. "Evelina, do you still remember this stone?" Cassian looked at me with hope. "You promised me you'd be my mate. I didn't know Lilith was a traitor. I've done nothing but go over my own mistakes these past few days, and I know I was wrong. Can we start over? I'll give up the Alpha position. I only want to be beside you."I looked at how small he had made himself and sighed. "Cassian, I buried that stone outside the Moon Temple a long time ago, and everything we had along with it. I almost died. How could I ever forgive that? Stop foll

Caught off guard, Lilith went sprawling when Cassian shoved her away. Her eyes immediately filled with tears. "That hurts..."Only then did Cassian come back to himself."Lilith, I didn't mean to." He said it, but he did not reach out to help her up.Something vicious flashed in Lilith's eyes, but she kept up her fragile act as she struggled to her feet. "I know, Cassian. You just love Evelina too much, the way I love you."Cassian froze, then shook his head. "Lilith, I don't love you. I took care of you out of sympathy for someone weaker. I hope you can understand that.""I'll stay by your side no matter what. Even if I can never be your mate officially, I'm willing." Lilith lifted her head and looked at him with forced courage. Cassian could no longer stand the heat in her eyes and stumbled away.Watching him go, Lilith ground the words out. "Evelina. Why do you always ruin everything for me?"Cassian came looking for me several more times after that, and every time I kept him outsid

Cassian rounded on me in disbelief. "Evelina, if you wanted to make me jealous, you didn't have to degrade yourself by taking another wolf as your mate. I know you couldn't have wanted this. Break the bond with him now, and we can honor the promise we made.""Oh, so you do remember you had a promise with her." Nora charged over and shoved Cassian so hard he stumbled."Or have you forgotten who gave the potion that could have eased Evelina's curse to a lowborn Omega? Who accused her of faking it when the curse struck and walked away without looking back? Who insisted on leaving the pack for days with a she-wolf who is nothing to you, right before the Full Moon Ceremony, abandoning Evelina here without caring whether she lived or died?"Listening to Nora hurl those questions at him in front of nearly every wolf in the pack, Cassian's face went completely rigid."Nora, this is between Evelina and me." He stepped forward again. "Evelina, I can explain. What happened with Lilith was..."I c

Silas was good to me. In all the days Cassian was away from the pack, he was the one who took care of me.The first time Nora saw Silas at my house, treating my wounds, she was too shocked to get a word out. "Evelina, what is Silas doing in your house? Doesn't he always keep to himself?"Silas's hands did not stop. "She didn't tell you? I'm going to be her mate soon."Nora looked from me to Silas. "Evelina, you know what a mate bond means, don't you? I don't want you choosing some wolf you barely know just because of Cassian."Silas raised his head. "I'm not some wolf she barely knows. I've wanted Evelina for a long time."Before I could recover from my shock, he took my hand and looked at Nora with complete seriousness. "I'll prove it to you. I deserve Evelina more than Cassian does, and I'll always treat her well."In the days that followed, Silas practically moved into my house. He gave me every rare gemstone he acquired, and he also looked after Nora and Theo. Even Theo, who had al

When Cassian returned from the forest with Lilith, he arrived just in time for that night's Full Moon Ceremony. But the moment they entered the pack, the atmosphere felt strangely wrong."Did you hear? Today is a big day for Evelina and Nora. They get to choose their mates on the very day they come of age. Just hearing about it makes me jealous."The passing wolves were all talking about it, but the moment they saw Cassian, they gave him a strange look, half pity and half mockery.Cassian straightened his slightly rumpled collar, a helpless smile at the corner of his mouth. "Evelina is being absurd."He complained under his breath to Lilith, though he could not quite hide the smugness in his voice. "She's so desperate to make us official that she turned it into a spectacle. Now every wolf in the pack knows."Lilith bit her lip, resentment flashing in her eyes. "Cassian, Evelina is forcing your hand..."At that, a rush of anger surged up in Cassian's chest. He lifted his head and looked

The gentleness on Cassian's face vanished all at once. Impatience showed in his eyes."Evelina, that's enough. I admit I treated you unfairly over the potion, but you don't have to make a scene just to get attention. And now you're wasting food. That bread was Lilith's way of being kind. This isn't like you."I fought down the pain in my body and reached for him. "Cassian... it hurts so much... it's the curse... the curse is starting."Cassian did not gather me up the way he always had. He looked down at me from above, his eyes full of scrutiny and doubt."Evelina, your acting has really improved. The curse doesn't take effect until the day of your coming of age. The ceremony is three days away. You'd make up a lie like this just to keep me here?"Everything in front of me went white and started spinning, and still I reached out and caught the hem of his clothes."I don't know, Cassian, just stay with me, please...""Enough." Cassian stood up and pulled hard. My hand lost its hold and
