Chapter 3

Author: Pebble
It was past 11 by the time we got home.

Fighting my exhaustion, I tried to open the car door, only to find it locked from the inside.

"Hold on. Yvonne isn't awake yet." Nathaniel looked at me in the rearview mirror.

"Getting out won't wake her."

"Opening the door will let the cold in. Yvonne isn't as strong as an ordinary wolf. She gets sick easily." Nathaniel pulled the blanket up over her.

I looked at him calmly.

I didn't shout or argue with him anymore.

I simply reached for the emergency hammer I'd left by the back window and swung it at the glass as hard as I could.

The glass cracked with a bang, making them both jump.

By the time Nathaniel understood what had happened, I'd already climbed out through the broken window.

He started to push his door open to come after me, but Yvonne grabbed his shirt.

She slumped against Nathaniel's chest, her eyes red.

"Nathaniel, what happened? You scared me half to death."

She'd just woken up. With her nose red and her eyes full of tears, she looked more pitiful than ever.

Nathaniel pulled her close and murmured something soothing.

I'd just gotten my documents together when the door was kicked open.

Nathaniel's expression darkened with anger when he saw me.

"Apologize."

Yvonne held his arm, her voice catching as she tried to stop him. "Let it go, Nathaniel. Chloe couldn't have meant it."

And then she squeezed out a few more tears.

Nathaniel wiped her tears away, his brows drawn together.

He'd worn that same grim expression whenever he stood up for me at school.

Now that same anger was turned on me, all because of another woman.

"You wouldn't let me out of the car. That's why I broke the glass."

I gripped my ID.

"All I wanted was to get out."

His tone was as harsh as ever. "I told you we'd open it in a minute."

I took a breath.

"I don't want to wait."

Every second I spent in the same space as those two made me sick.

Yvonne curled up against him with a hand over her chest.

"Nathaniel, please stop fighting. Both of you. This is my fault. I shouldn't have fallen asleep.

"But I've been posing for photos all day, and I'm exhausted. Unlike Chloe, who's had an easy day and still has the energy to break a window."

And the tears started again.

Nathaniel frowned at me, his expression even more accusing.

"Chloe Shaw, are you really refusing to apologize?"

"I didn't do anything wrong."

Nathaniel gave me a cold look and took out his phone. Right in front of me, he called the coordinator and canceled our mating ceremony, just six days away.

"Chloe Shaw, I gave you a chance."

Before, my wolf would already have been crying. I'd have lowered my head, apologized, and begged him not to cancel the ceremony. This time, I was calm.

When I didn't give in and apologize as he'd expected, panic flickered across Nathaniel's face.

But it was gone almost immediately.

"Pretending you don't care?

"Chloe Shaw, that doesn't work on me. Go on. Keep acting like you're above it all."

He went to the bathroom counter, grabbed the matching cups and toiletries I'd bought, and threw them at my feet.

Then he went to the bedroom and brought out my clothes, my bags, and the photos of us. He threw those out too.

"Since the ceremony is canceled, you and I are strangers now.

"You have no business living here anymore. Take your things and get out of my house."

The police arrived quickly. A camera had recorded Nathaniel grabbing me, and I insisted on pressing charges rather than settling. They took him into custody for harassment and held him for a week.Delia heard what had happened over the phone and rushed over. She swore at Nathaniel's retreating back. "You piece of garbage! She broke up with you, and you still had the nerve to follow her here. If this country didn't have laws, I'd have beaten you senseless myself."If the owner and I hadn't both held her back, she'd have gone for him.I pushed her into a chair and poured her a glass of water. "All right, calm down. I'm fine."I poured myself one too.Nathaniel had genuinely frightened me back there. To me, he'd always been the calm one.Whenever we fought, I'd be furious while he sat there drinking water.I'd almost never seen Nathaniel lose control like that.I took a sip and thought it through. The police said a week. He knows where I live. When he gets out, he'll come back.I remember

He'd lost a lot of weight, and there was stubble all over his jaw.His eyes were bloodshot, as if he hadn't slept properly in a long time. His gaze sharpened when he saw me, and his eyes lit up.He came running over and reached for my hands. "Chloe."I quietly stepped back, out of his reach. His hand froze in midair, then closed. He looked at me, hurt."You don't want me anymore?"In the light of the sunset over the water, he looked even more haggard.I looked at him and said nothing.During those first nights after I left him, I thought about him constantly. I remembered every kind thing he'd done for me, every little detail of our time together.I'd wonder what he was doing, whether he ever thought about me, and whether he regretted losing me.Getting over him was brutal. Night after night, I couldn't sleep. If he'd shown up in front of me then, I'd have cried and forgiven him.Time had a way of dulling even the deepest pain. Now, looking at him felt like passing a wolf I'd never met

Once I was in the car, Delia handed me a blanket and a heat pack. Her jaw tightened when she saw me shivering."Nathaniel White is a complete asshole. Throwing you out in the middle of the night and not even giving you a coat."I rubbed my stiff hands together and told her it was fine.Delia turned up the heat and reclined my seat.I was about to lean back when my stomach chose that moment to growl. She was horrified. "Don't tell me you haven't eaten."I nodded guiltily. Her hands closed into fists. She took me straight to the late-night restaurant everyone in the city knew and ordered enough food to cover the table.I ate like a starving wolf while Delia watched, looking heartbroken.Once I'd eaten and had something to drink, we went straight to the airport. When the plane landed, I saw Nathaniel's message and realized I'd forgotten to delete his contact. I blocked his number and deleted the contact right away. Then Delia and I hauled our bags to the little seaside place we'd rented.

Nathaniel's POVNathaniel cleared the dishes before he opened the front door."Do you know what you did wrong?"Nobody in the hallway answered.Nathaniel frowned and stepped out.The cold air cut through him. Everything was eerily quiet. The things he'd thrown out last night lay scattered across the floor, filthy and ruined by the wind and rain.He searched every corner of the hallway, even the stairwell, but found no sign of Chloe. And then Nathaniel panicked.Yvonne came out with a coat and put it over his shoulders."Chloe's gone too far. Instead of waiting in the hallway, she's hiding to make you worry. If you ask me, she's doing it on purpose."Nathaniel caught her hand as if it could steady him. He couldn't help asking, "You think she's doing it on purpose?""Obviously."Yvonne clasped his hand in return."Women love keeping you on the hook. She didn't get her bridal photos yesterday, then she refused to apologize and got thrown out. She's humiliated and angry."She wants you to

Nathaniel's POVThunder rumbled in the middle of the night, and rain poured down outside. The noise woke Nathaniel. Instinctively, he put an arm around the person sleeping beside him.She felt thinner than before, and it made him frown.Chloe had gone overboard with dieting and working out for the photos and the ceremony. He could feel her bones digging into him now. She'd felt better with a little more weight on her.Even her scent had changed. It was wrong. He didn't like it.He pulled her in tighter."Nathaniel, I can't breathe."Nathaniel loosened his hold.A few seconds later it hit him that something was wrong.Chloe's voice didn't sound like that.He got up quickly and turned on the light.Yvonne squinted at him, confused."What's the matter?"Nathaniel looked at her as the events of the day came back to him, one by one. He'd thrown Chloe out because she wouldn't admit she was wrong. Then he'd let Yvonne sleep beside him after she'd said she was afraid to sleep alone.Nathaniel

The photo I'd treasured for seven years hit the floor and broke apart. My eyes stung despite myself. Those seven years felt like one long joke.I still remembered moving in when the place was completely empty.Nathaniel had told me this would always be my home and I could decorate it however I liked. And now he was shielding Yvonne behind him and screaming at me to get out of his house.I wiped my eyes and looked at him."Are you sure you want to throw me out?"Nathaniel went quiet.Yvonne grabbed his hand, pleading with him. "Nathaniel, don't do anything rash."Then she came running over and took hold of my hands."Chloe, all of this is because of me."I'll do anything you want if it means you and Nathaniel will make up.""Then get out," I said calmly."Never come near him again, and we'll be fine."Yvonne froze, her eyes instantly filling with tears."All right. I'm leaving right now."She turned as she said it, took a few steps, and swayed.Nathaniel caught her immediately."Chloe S
