Chapter 2

Author: Pebble
I sat in the dressing room reviewing the travel plans Delia had sent me. By the time I'd sent her my ID and the paperwork she needed, it was dark outside.

Nathaniel and Yvonne had come inside too and started choosing photos.

Yvonne held Nathaniel's hand and whined playfully about how many photos there were. Looking through them was giving her a headache, she said, so she asked him to choose for her.

Nathaniel agreed. He rested a hand on her head and told her to get some rest, then sat down at the computer. He studied each photo carefully before making his choices.

My eyes stung.

So he did have that kind of patience. Just not for me.

Yesterday, I'd tried on dress after dress and narrowed it down to two. I couldn't choose between them, so I'd asked what he thought. He'd been lying on the couch and hadn't even looked up.

"If you can't even choose a dress, let's just not get married."

Once he'd finished choosing the unedited photos, Nathaniel noticed me watching.

He rubbed between his eyebrows as if he had a headache.

Normally, by this point, I'd have been arguing with him out of jealousy and demanding an explanation.

I didn't this time.

I just looked away and called a member of the crew over to help me out of the dress.

Something flickered in Nathaniel's eyes. Instinctively, he reached out to stop her.

"Still angry?"

He came over, took my hand, and pulled me in against him.

I stayed quiet.

"I was just looking through the photos. I don't think you're in any of them."

He pinched my cheek.

"Let's go take a few together. All right?"

He rarely gave me a chance to end a fight, but this offer came far too late.

I was about to say something when Yvonne called to him. "Nathaniel, I can't reach the zipper. This dress is impossible. Come help me."

He let go of my hand immediately and went to her.

I closed my empty hand.

Of course. Yvonne always came first.

He took the crew member with him, too.

Partway across the room he looked back at me.

"We'll take the photos next time. Go get changed. Yvonne's had a long day. Don't hold everyone up."

Nathaniel White, there is no next time.

I stared after him for a long time before dragging my heavy skirt toward the changing room.

To make the dress look fuller, the crew had layered several underskirts beneath it. Each one was tied and knotted around my waist.

With no one to help, I was exhausted by the time I got out of the dress. All I could think about was going home and lying down.

But when I came out, Nathaniel was gone. So was the car he'd parked outside.

I got my phone out and called him.

The phone rang for a long time before he answered. His voice was flat, without a trace of guilt.

"I forgot to tell you. Yvonne said she was hungry, so I took her out to eat first.

"See if you can book a ride on your phone. I'll send you the location. Come join us for something to eat."

I checked the rideshare app. No drivers had accepted my request. "I can't get a ride," I told him.

He went quiet for a few seconds, then let out a barely audible sigh. "Then stay where you are. Don't wander off. I'll be back for you in an hour at most."

Three hours went by.

Most of the lights at the shoot location had been turned off.

Nathaniel still hadn't come.

My phone battery was below 20%, and I was stiff with cold. I pulled up directions home.

I was halfway home when Nathaniel's car finally pulled up beside me. The first thing he said was, "Didn't I tell you not to wander off?"

Not a hint of guilt about being late.

Deep down, he seemed to believe I should stay in one place and wait for him forever.

I was shivering and didn't want to argue. I got straight into the back seat.

Up front, Yvonne was fast asleep under the blanket I'd spent ages choosing. The heat was cranked up.

Nathaniel got out and came around to fasten my seat belt.

His stern expression softened the moment he touched my freezing hands.

Back in the driver's seat, he tossed a coat at me and turned the heat up another notch.

He looked back at me, his voice softer now. "You haven't eaten? Yvonne and I were worried you'd be starving, so we brought you some food.

"It's all your favorites. Go on, eat."

I hadn't eaten since that morning. Hunger won, and I opened the containers they'd brought.

Inside was a cold steak.

I didn't eat beef. Yvonne was the one who loved steak.

The fat had turned white and solid. My stomach churned with nausea.

The police arrived quickly. A camera had recorded Nathaniel grabbing me, and I insisted on pressing charges rather than settling. They took him into custody for harassment and held him for a week.Delia heard what had happened over the phone and rushed over. She swore at Nathaniel's retreating back. "You piece of garbage! She broke up with you, and you still had the nerve to follow her here. If this country didn't have laws, I'd have beaten you senseless myself."If the owner and I hadn't both held her back, she'd have gone for him.I pushed her into a chair and poured her a glass of water. "All right, calm down. I'm fine."I poured myself one too.Nathaniel had genuinely frightened me back there. To me, he'd always been the calm one.Whenever we fought, I'd be furious while he sat there drinking water.I'd almost never seen Nathaniel lose control like that.I took a sip and thought it through. The police said a week. He knows where I live. When he gets out, he'll come back.I remember

He'd lost a lot of weight, and there was stubble all over his jaw.His eyes were bloodshot, as if he hadn't slept properly in a long time. His gaze sharpened when he saw me, and his eyes lit up.He came running over and reached for my hands. "Chloe."I quietly stepped back, out of his reach. His hand froze in midair, then closed. He looked at me, hurt."You don't want me anymore?"In the light of the sunset over the water, he looked even more haggard.I looked at him and said nothing.During those first nights after I left him, I thought about him constantly. I remembered every kind thing he'd done for me, every little detail of our time together.I'd wonder what he was doing, whether he ever thought about me, and whether he regretted losing me.Getting over him was brutal. Night after night, I couldn't sleep. If he'd shown up in front of me then, I'd have cried and forgiven him.Time had a way of dulling even the deepest pain. Now, looking at him felt like passing a wolf I'd never met

Once I was in the car, Delia handed me a blanket and a heat pack. Her jaw tightened when she saw me shivering."Nathaniel White is a complete asshole. Throwing you out in the middle of the night and not even giving you a coat."I rubbed my stiff hands together and told her it was fine.Delia turned up the heat and reclined my seat.I was about to lean back when my stomach chose that moment to growl. She was horrified. "Don't tell me you haven't eaten."I nodded guiltily. Her hands closed into fists. She took me straight to the late-night restaurant everyone in the city knew and ordered enough food to cover the table.I ate like a starving wolf while Delia watched, looking heartbroken.Once I'd eaten and had something to drink, we went straight to the airport. When the plane landed, I saw Nathaniel's message and realized I'd forgotten to delete his contact. I blocked his number and deleted the contact right away. Then Delia and I hauled our bags to the little seaside place we'd rented.

Nathaniel's POVNathaniel cleared the dishes before he opened the front door."Do you know what you did wrong?"Nobody in the hallway answered.Nathaniel frowned and stepped out.The cold air cut through him. Everything was eerily quiet. The things he'd thrown out last night lay scattered across the floor, filthy and ruined by the wind and rain.He searched every corner of the hallway, even the stairwell, but found no sign of Chloe. And then Nathaniel panicked.Yvonne came out with a coat and put it over his shoulders."Chloe's gone too far. Instead of waiting in the hallway, she's hiding to make you worry. If you ask me, she's doing it on purpose."Nathaniel caught her hand as if it could steady him. He couldn't help asking, "You think she's doing it on purpose?""Obviously."Yvonne clasped his hand in return."Women love keeping you on the hook. She didn't get her bridal photos yesterday, then she refused to apologize and got thrown out. She's humiliated and angry."She wants you to

Nathaniel's POVThunder rumbled in the middle of the night, and rain poured down outside. The noise woke Nathaniel. Instinctively, he put an arm around the person sleeping beside him.She felt thinner than before, and it made him frown.Chloe had gone overboard with dieting and working out for the photos and the ceremony. He could feel her bones digging into him now. She'd felt better with a little more weight on her.Even her scent had changed. It was wrong. He didn't like it.He pulled her in tighter."Nathaniel, I can't breathe."Nathaniel loosened his hold.A few seconds later it hit him that something was wrong.Chloe's voice didn't sound like that.He got up quickly and turned on the light.Yvonne squinted at him, confused."What's the matter?"Nathaniel looked at her as the events of the day came back to him, one by one. He'd thrown Chloe out because she wouldn't admit she was wrong. Then he'd let Yvonne sleep beside him after she'd said she was afraid to sleep alone.Nathaniel

The photo I'd treasured for seven years hit the floor and broke apart. My eyes stung despite myself. Those seven years felt like one long joke.I still remembered moving in when the place was completely empty.Nathaniel had told me this would always be my home and I could decorate it however I liked. And now he was shielding Yvonne behind him and screaming at me to get out of his house.I wiped my eyes and looked at him."Are you sure you want to throw me out?"Nathaniel went quiet.Yvonne grabbed his hand, pleading with him. "Nathaniel, don't do anything rash."Then she came running over and took hold of my hands."Chloe, all of this is because of me."I'll do anything you want if it means you and Nathaniel will make up.""Then get out," I said calmly."Never come near him again, and we'll be fine."Yvonne froze, her eyes instantly filling with tears."All right. I'm leaving right now."She turned as she said it, took a few steps, and swayed.Nathaniel caught her immediately."Chloe S
