Chapter 4

Autor: Liora Z
I pulled Lily into a tight hug, stroking her back to soothe her.

"It's okay, baby, Mommy's here," I whispered, my voice still trembling, but I tried to sound strong for her.

Her sobs slowly subsided, but her little hands kept a tight grip on my shirt.

I looked up at Rowan, a bitter, mocking smile on my lips.

"Go back? Go back and starve?"

Rowan's expression changed from anger to shock. "What are you talking about? Starve?"

He took a step closer, his voice filled with disbelief. "What about the truckload of supplies I had sent to you every month? The money, the food—it was enough to provide for you both. I had Belle oversee the deliveries herself!"

Hearing that, I almost laughed out loud.

"Supplies? I'm telling you, Rowan, in three years, I haven't received a single thing!"

"That's impossible!" he snapped, turning to Isabelle. "Belle, what is she talking about? Didn't you send the supplies as I asked?"

Isabelle flinched, then quickly put on a wounded expression, her eyes filling with tears.

"I... I had them sent every month," she stammered, her voice thick with fake emotion. "Perhaps... perhaps something happened on the road? Or maybe you moved, Odette, and didn't tell us your new address?"

Then, she added in a soft voice, just loud enough for those nearby to hear, "But... Odette, are you sure you never received anything? Could it be that... life was so hard you felt you had to... invent a story to get some sympathy?"

Her meaning was clear. She was suggesting I was a liar, using a sob story to win sympathy.

Looking at her hypocritical performance, the rage inside me threatened to boil over.

As I expected, Rowan's resolve began to waver. He looked from Isabelle's tearful face back to me, and a flicker of doubt entered his eyes.

"Odette, is what Belle says true?"

I knew there was no point in arguing. Isabelle was a master manipulator, and Rowan was already on her side. He wouldn't believe anything I said.

Fine. I would show him the truth.

Ignoring them both, I grabbed Lily and made a break for the grand hall.

"Odette! What do you think you're doing?!" Rowan roared from behind me.

Just then, a few small figures came running out of the hall.

"Mommy! Mommy!"

"Daddy, we were looking all over for you!"

Two children, a boy and a girl about four or five years old, launched themselves into Rowan's arms.

I froze.

"Hey, little ones, what are you doing out here?" Rowan's voice instantly softened into a gentle caress. He knelt, stroking their hair. "Didn't Daddy tell you to wait inside?"

Daddy?

I felt a sharp, stabbing pain in my heart. So this was how he treated other people's children—with warmth, patience, and love.

Meanwhile, he couldn't even stand to look at his own daughter.

"Daddy, someone said you were fighting with someone out here. We were worried," the little girl said, her voice full of adoration.

"Mommy was worried too!" the boy added, looking up at Isabelle. "Mommy, what happened to your hand?"

I watched the picture-perfect family, and a wild, bitter laugh escaped my lips. "Hahahaha! Daddy? Mommy?"

"Odette, I can explain..." Rowan began, finally realizing how this looked.

But the little boy pointed a finger at Lily, his face scrunched in disgust. "Daddy, who is this filthy little mutt? Make her go away! She'll get our home dirty!"

Mutt?

Did he just call Lily a mutt?

My gaze turned ice-cold and locked onto the boy.

"Waaaah!" The boy, terrified by my glare, burst into tears. "Mommy! Daddy! That mean lady is looking at me! She's going to hit me!"

"Odette!" Rowan immediately shielded the children, glaring at me with renewed fury. "Don't you dare look at my son like that! He's just a child! He didn't mean anything by it! Why are you, a grown woman, picking on a child?"

His voice grew harsher. "Now take your daughter and get out of here! Stop shaming us all!"

I just laughed coldly.

Ignoring him, I held Lily tight and charged toward the entrance of the hall.

"Halt!" The guards at the door blocked my path. "No one enters without an invitation!"

I looked at the towering guards, my heart sinking with despair.

But then, through the open doors, I spotted a familiar face in the crowd.

"Ethan!" I screamed with all my might. "It's me, Odette! Let me in!"

My voice carried through the entire hall.

At the sound of his name, Ethan spun around, his face lighting up with shocked disbelief and joy. "Odette? You're alive?"

On the main stage, the Council Head, Lucas, who had been in mid-conversation, turned to see what the commotion was about.

At that moment, Rowan rushed over and grabbed my arm, trying to pull me out of sight while offering a frantic excuse. "Council Head, my deepest apologies for the disturbance! She's just a crazed woman from the pack. I'll have her removed at once!"

But as Rowan tried to silence me, I wrenched my arm free and pulled a necklace from under my collar.

It was the heirloom of the Silver Moon heiress. I fell to my knees and declared in a loud, clear voice:

"Uncle, I am no crazed woman! I am Odette of the Silver Moon Pack, and I am here to petition the High Council for permission to sever my mate bond with Alpha Rowan of the Blackstone Pack!"

After returning to the Silvermoon Pack, Lucas visited Lily and me often. One afternoon, while I was playing with Lily in the garden, Lucas approached with a kind smile on his face."Odette, I'd like to talk to you about something," he said gently, sitting down beside me."What is it, Uncle?"Lucas paused for a moment before speaking. "You're a free woman now, and I was hoping to arrange a new mate for you. Several of the Northern Alphas are excellent wolves—powerful, men of good character...""Uncle," I interrupted him, shaking my head softly. "I've learned a bitter lesson about what a mate can be. For the rest of my life, I only want to be with Lily and my father. I have no desire for another."I looked at Lily chasing butterflies among the flowers, my eyes filled with warmth. "She is all I need.""But child, you're still so young. You can't let one mistake...""Uncle, this is my choice," I said firmly. "I will never again entrust my happiness to any man."My uncle sighed but didn't p

The Enforcers quickly surrounded him. Rowan backed away in terror. "No! Lord Lucas, please, let me explain! I can make it up to Odette!""Make it up to her?" Lucas scoffed. "What makes you think you're in any position to do that?"He took out the seal of the Werewolf High Council and announced to everyone, "By the authority vested in me as the Head of the High Council, I hereby strip Rowan of his Alpha title of the Blackstone Pack and sentence him to the pack dungeons! I also grant Odette of Silvermoon the right to sever their mate bond!"Hearing this, I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding.Finally. I was finally free from this traitor.Lucas's assistant immediately brought over the bond-severing agreement, and I signed my name without a moment's hesitation. From now on, Rowan and I were done. Forever."No! Odette!" Rowan pleaded, his eyes red. "Please, don't do this! For the sake of what we once had...""What we had?" I looked at him with a cold smile. "Rowan, are you even wo

I stared at him coldly, my eyes dripping with scorn. "What's the matter? Disappointed I'm not as weak as you thought?""You've been lying to me!" Rowan suddenly roared, lunging forward and grabbing my arm. "Why did you lie to me? If you had just told me the truth, none of this would have..."I shoved his hand away in disgust. "Lying? Rowan, you have the nerve to call me a liar?""If I hadn't thrown everything away for a worthless loser like you, would I be in this mess?"I turned to my uncle, my eyes welling with tears as I spoke, my voice trembling."Uncle, five years ago, I was the one who saved Rowan when his wolf was broken. I used all of my healing power to mend it for him.""And I fell in love with him," I said with a bitter smile. "I thought he was my destined mate, the one the Moon Goddess chose for me. To be with him, I went against my father's wishes, gave up my birthright, and cut all ties with my family. That's why my father had to claim I was missing.""But Uncle," I turne

The moment the words left my mouth, the entire hall fell dead silent.Everyone stared at me in shock, and then whispers erupted all at once."Odette of the Silvermoon Pack? Didn't she go missing years ago?""When did she become Rowan's mate…?""Impossible. She looks like a beggar..."Years ago, I cut ties with my father to be with Rowan. To protect the Silvermoon Pack's honor, my father told everyone I had disappeared. So, almost no one here recognized me.Rowan’s face went pale for a second. Then his eyes darted around, and he lunged forward dramatically, and clamped a hand over my mouth, hissing,"Are you insane?! Odette! Do you have any idea what the penalty is for impersonating the Silvermoon heir?"A vicious glint flashed in his eyes as he lowered his voice to a whisper in my ear."Impersonating an Alpha heir is a death sentence, Odette. You're digging your own grave."He turned to Lord Lucas on the dais, his voice pleading."My Lord, I am so sorry! This madwoman must have overhea

I knew why Rowan was so desperate to stop me. The Head of the High Council, a powerful elder wolf named Lucas, was a guest at today's ceremony.Rowan couldn't possibly explain my presence, let alone why his supposed "mate" looked like some stray rogue.Just then, Isabelle, who had been silent, stepped forward with a perfect, practiced smile."Odette, dear, you must be exhausted from your journey," she said, reaching for my hand. "Come, let me take you to a guest room to freshen up. You can change into some clean clothes."I snatched my hand back, my skin crawling at her feigned kindness. In my last life, she had used that same gentle tone to lure me into a room before poisoning me with wolfsbane.I wouldn't make the same mistake twice."I don't need it," I said, my voice like flint. "I'm going to the main hall, and I want Rowan to introduce us—me and his daughter—to all of his guests."Rowan's face went pale. "Odette, look at yourself! You're in rags! You'll bring shame to the pack!"I
