Chapter 1

Only then did Victor notice me. He hesitated before striding over. "Tia, what happened?"

Before I could answer, Louise waved her hands frantically. "I-I was only trying to help, but I accidentally knocked over the shelf, and it fell on the Luna. I'm so sorry!"

She looked so pale and helpless that anyone would have felt sorry for her.

Whispers broke out around us.

"Fated mates really are different."

"Louise is an Omega. Of course she needs extra protection."

"The Luna shouldn't be so petty."

I gave Victor a bitter smile, but his attention had already turned to the crowd. His eyes narrowed, and a wave of Alpha authority swept through the room.

He scooped me into his arms. "Everyone, clear out," he ordered.

But as we passed Louise, he faltered, as though some invisible force were pulling him back.

"Alpha..." Louise called softly, her voice full of longing.

Victor stopped dead.

I felt him hesitate and finally spoke up. "Victor, I need to get this treated."

Even then, it took him several long seconds to start walking again.

I stared at his clenched jaw, my heart sinking.

Ever since Louise joined the pack, she'd found one excuse after another to summon him. Two days ago, she'd gotten lost in the Misty Woods. Yesterday, another wolf had bullied her. Today, she'd managed to drop a shelf on her hand.

And every single time, Victor had rushed to her rescue, unable to take his eyes off her.

Even as Victor tended to my knee back in our bedroom, I couldn't get the way he'd looked at Louise out of my head.

"Does it still hurt?" he asked, looking up into my eyes.

"No," I answered curtly and pulled my skirt down to cover the bruise.

Victor gently took my hand, his voice hoarse. "Tia, wolves are instinctively protective of their fated mates. What I feel for Louise is nothing more than instinct."

My nose stung.

"Victor, when you marked me, you said loving me was instinct, too. How can your wolf feel that way about two different women?"

Something flickered in his eyes, and then he smiled.

"I misspoke. You're the only one my wolf is drawn to. That's why I brought you home, remember?"

He stroked my hair and pressed a warm kiss to my knee, as if all my doubts existed only in my head.

How could I doubt him?

We'd grown up together. We'd always been there for each other.

When he went on his first hunt at seven, he'd insisted on giving me half the rabbit he'd caught.

When he first shifted at 15, the pain had left him drenched in sweat and collapsed on the ground. As soon as he came to, he nuzzled me with his furry wolf head.

"Tia, my wolf says he really likes you."

At 23, after he took over the pack, his voice shook as he asked me, "Will you be my Luna?"

Surely everything we'd been through couldn't be undone by some outsider.

Or so I thought.

The very next day, Victor brought Louise home.

The guilt written all over his face was almost laughable.

"We don't have any spare rooms," I said coldly.

"Tia..." There was a hint of apology in Victor's voice, but he'd clearly already made up his mind. "Louise keeps getting hurt. She needs to stay close to me."

I slammed my fork down and cut him off.

"You promised I'd always be the lady of this house."

"Tia." His voice went flat, clearly annoyed. "Louise is just staying here for a while."

I knew that look all too well.

It was the same frown he wore whenever I confronted him about abandoning me.

"She's new to the pack, and she's my fated mate. As Alpha, it's my responsibility to look after her."

Somehow, I was always the unreasonable one.

My chest tightened until I could barely breathe.

"Fine." I rose from my chair, too exhausted to argue anymore. "If that's what you want, let her stay."

My eyes fell on his hand resting against Louise's calf. Just last night, those same fingers had caressed the mating mark on my neck.

Now they were touching another woman.

For a moment, I wanted to sink my teeth into his hand and tear it right off. But I held back.

Losing my temper would only give Louise another excuse to play the victim and Victor another reason to rush to her defense.

And I was done fighting for a place in his heart.

Back in my room, I texted Teresa Holloway, the witch. "Any progress? Have you figured out how to break the bond?"

Her reply came almost immediately. "Not yet, babe. Why? Has our oh-so-devoted Alpha already fallen for his fated mate?"

I ignored the jab. "What about the mating mark? Is there any way to remove it?"

Tia's POV:Victor came back several more times, but I refused to see him.The gifts he asked Noah to bring me were left to gather dust in a storage cabinet.I spent all my time at sea, letting the water slowly mend my battered heart. My old life began to feel like something from another lifetime. The memories were finally starting to fade. Then Louise showed up again.I couldn't sleep that night. Around two in the morning, I slipped on a cardigan and stepped outside the dive center for some fresh air.The sea was pitch-black, lit only by the faint glow of a distant lighthouse. And then I smelled it.Lily perfume.Underneath it was the rancid stench of rot.I spun around.Louise stood on the boardwalk behind me, her shadow stretching across the wooden planks in the moonlight. She was so thin that her eyes had sunk deep into their sockets and her cheekbones jutted out. Her face was deathly pale, like a ghoul that had crawled out of the earth."Luna. Long time no see.""What are you doing

Tia's POV:His gaze moved from my face to where his mark had once been. Then he reached out like he wanted to touch my neck.I frowned, covered it with my hand, and stepped back.He froze, his hand suspended in midair."I..." He opened his mouth, his voice strained. "I've come to take you home.""That's not my home anymore," I said calmly.Victor flinched as though I'd punched him."No, Tia." His voice was painfully hoarse. "I know I was wrong. You have every right to be angry with me, to blame me for everything. But please don't say that.He rubbed a hand over his face and continued. "The fated-mate pull is gone, and Louise... she's gone too. There's no one between us anymore.""That has nothing to do with me." I took a deep breath and looked him in the eye. "As you can see, Victor, I erased the mark. There's nothing between us now."His mouth fell open, and his eyes reddened instantly. "I know I was wrong! We can renew the mark! No, if you're afraid of the pain, I won't mark you. Jus

Victor's POVThe full moon finally came, bringing my chance to sever the fated bond between Louise and me.At the altar, Louise was tied down on the stone slab, gagged, her eyes full of fear.Teresa glanced at Louise, who was struggling with all her strength. "Alpha, if either party is unwilling, the backlash could be devastating. Especially for you. Forcing the bond apart means shattering the fated attraction and tearing it from your very flesh and blood. You could—"I cut her off coldly."I said, begin."Teresa sighed. She raised her hand and traced runes over the altar. Silver light washed over everything.Louise let out a desperate whimper, fighting the ritual with every ounce of willpower she had left. Her resistance only intensified the backlash against me for defying our fated bond.It felt as though a red-hot chain were whipping across my limbs and torso, again and again. It hurt so much I couldn't stand. I doubled over and coughed up a mouthful of blood. My vision swam. The pa

Victor's POVI roughly set Louise down and turned to run out. That chalice held the vows Tia and I had made with the Moon Goddess as our witness."Alpha!" Louise grabbed the hem of my shirt.I looked down at her, my brow furrowed. "Let go.""You can't go." Louise's voice changed, and her eyes burned into mine. "The chalice is already broken. Going now won't change anything.""What did you just say?" I tore her hand away. She looked up at me, her eyes red-rimmed. "Victor, don't you understand? This is the Moon Goddess's will. The broken chalice is a sign. She's giving you a chance to get your life back on track.""What's that supposed to mean?" I asked through clenched teeth."I'm your fated mate," Louise said, slowly and clearly. "I'm the one you're meant to spend your life with."Her helpless facade vanished. She held my gaze, her voice as alluring as a siren's song."Whatever you had with Tia was only temporary. It's over now. You should come back to me."A shiver ran through me.I s

Victor's POV:I stayed by Louise's bedside all night without getting a wink of sleep. She was pale, occasionally letting out soft whimpers like a frightened pup. She looked so fragile, so desperately in need of my protection.Tia used to be like that.I was the one who told her the pack needed both of us to protect it.The Tia who cried easily vanished, replaced by the calm, steady Luna the pack needed. She loved me so much, and lately I'd been neglecting her.Guilt tightened my chest. I absently rubbed the ring on my left hand, deciding I'd go check on Tia as soon as Louise woke up.At the first light of dawn, Louise finally opened her eyes."Alpha..." Her voice was hoarse. She reached out and caught my wrist. "Have you been here the whole time?"I nodded and tried to pull away, but her eyes immediately filled with tears."I thought you'd abandoned me. The Luna was terrifying yesterday. You're the only one who makes me feel safe." She pressed her cheek into my palm.I stared down at h

Louise stood before me, holding the key to a hidden cabinet in Victor's study. "Luna, we need the sacred chalice for the bond-severing ritual. The Alpha asked me to retrieve it, but I'm scared to go into the chapel alone."I should have said no.But Teresa had warned me that the potion could only erase the mark on my neck. It couldn't undo the vows sealed within the sacred chalice. If I didn't undo them myself before the mark was erased, the vows would stay in my blood and bones like barbs. After some hesitation, I got up and accompanied Louise to the chapel. The chalice rested on a pedestal at the center of the altar. Louise picked it up and turned to me. "When I was little, the elders told me this chalice was meant to hold the blood of fated mates."The meek expression on her face gave way to a sly, calculating look. Before I could step back, she threw a handful of acrid powder at me.I choked and coughed. A strange heat spread through my body, and silver light spilled from my finger
