Chapter 1

As I turned around and walked out of the church, a burst of cheering erupted behind me. They were pushing Matteo and Livia together, chanting for him to propose.

Matteo lowered his voice, saying, “Don’t talk nonsense. Serena is my girlfriend, and we’re already engaged.”

Someone laughed. “An engagement is just an engagement, but love is love. You and Livia parted ways so tragically back then. Who’d believe you’d be satisfied with marrying Serena?”

My footsteps halted on the stone steps outside the church. Inside, I heard Matteo let out a sigh.

“There aren’t that many perfect endings in this world. My heart belongs to Livia, and my body belongs to Serena. It’s all fair. Besides, Serena loves me too much. She may throw her little tantrums and cry, but she could never bring herself to leave me. She’d never let it affect my relationship with Livia.”

The other person asked, “Aren’t you afraid Serena will break up with you?”

Matteo gave a soft chuckle. “She won’t. We’ve been together for five years, and she’s loved me for five years. She can’t let go.”

Standing out there, I felt a lump in my throat. I could perfectly picture the expression on his face as he said those words—hypocritical, arrogant, and very smug. It was exactly how he had effortlessly manipulated me for the past five years.

Unable to stomach it for another second, I hurried away. A sudden wave of nausea hit me, and I had to lean against the church’s exterior stone wall, dry-heaving. As I straightened up, the silver necklace around my neck slipped out.

It was my five-year anniversary gift from Matteo. It was a very thin silver chain with a tiny red stone set into the pendant. I had always worn it, never wanting to take it off. However, when I handed Livia the bouquet earlier, I noticed she was wearing a necklace too.

It was the same design. The only difference was that hers was a solid gold chain, and her pendant was a ruby. That glint of red resting against her collarbone had looked absolutely stunning.

Mine, on the other hand, looked like a cheap promotional giveaway. No wonder Matteo kept smiling at me when he gave it to me. I thought he was just as happy as I was, but as it turned out, he was just laughing at how stupid I was.

A cleaning lady walked over, bending down to look at the chain that had fallen to the ground. “Miss, do you still want this?”

I glanced at it and replied, “No.”

She looked at it with regret. “Are you sure? It looks quite expensive.”

I offered her a faint smile. “It’s just garbage.”

Earlier that afternoon, I had accepted the transfer order to Old Port.

Three days ago, the Don’s personal assistant had sought me out and handed me a sealed document. Inside, there was only an aerial photograph of Old Port and a line of handwritten text.

“Eliminate Palma, and Old Port is yours.”

Palma was the capo of the docks at Old Port. He controlled three of the Berradi mafia family’s money-laundering channels and refused to give them up. However, out of respect for their long-standing ties, the Don couldn’t move against him directly.

The assistant had told me that whoever resolved the issue would take the seat at Old Port. So, I accepted the document and ignored all of Matteo’s messages. That very night, I flew to Genosha. In the villa of Palma’s mistress, I sent him to meet his maker with a single strand of piano wire.

The next morning, the people at Old Port reached out to me of their own accord, stating they were willing to hand over the cargo manifests and the keys to the docks. I called an online meeting and offered them a ten percent higher profit cut than Palma had, on the condition that they helped me keep the underlings in line.

After the assistant received the news, he replied with an ‘okay.’

Helen, the daughter of the Berradi mafia family’s Don and also my best friend, called me when she found out I was heading to Old Port.

“Serena, have you thought this through? If you go there, what happens to you and Matteo?”

I stared out at the gray-blue Metropolis sky outside my window. “We broke up.”

There was nothing but faint static on the line for a moment.

Then, Helen let out a laugh. “Good riddance. There are plenty of fish in the sea. Opportunities to climb the ladder in the Berradi family don’t come around often. The news that you killed Palma has spread. No one at Old Port dares to look you in the eye right now.”

She was right. I had waited five years for Matteo’s promise of marriage. In terms of sheer capability, I should have entered the inner circle long ago. Back then, I had hesitated. I was constantly considering him, fearing a long-distance relationship, worrying he’d be unhappy, and being afraid that five years of affection would be ground down by distance.

Thinking back on it now, that thought was ridiculous.

Months later, the Berradi family hosted a ball. I was representing San Rosa’s Old Port branch to give a speech at the reception. In the ballroom, crystal chandeliers hung high overhead, silver utensils gleamed, and the family crest decorated the walls. Below the stage, Helen stood in the crowd, raising her glass to me with a brilliant smile.Standing at the podium, facing the Don and every member of the family, I announced that the annual revenue from Old Port’s projects had tripled. As the applause erupted, I caught sight of the ocean just outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. At that exact moment, a sudden sense of clarity washed over me. A woman’s true place was never beside a man. It wasn’t in front of a tiny cutting board in some kitchen, nor was it waiting to be chosen and kept like a pet in a gilded cage. Our place could be at the head of a negotiation table, on the deck of a cargo ship at the docks, or on the signature section of a project contract. It could be anywhere we

Later on, I heard about how things ended for Matteo and Livia. It wasn’t that I went out of my way to look for information, but the mafia family circle was just too small, and nobody could keep a secret. After Matteo lost his credit standing, the Moretti family discovered that he had misappropriated family reserve funds to issue cashier’s checks to me. Even more fatal was the fact that a rupture in his cash flow chain led to a shipment of cargo being seized at the docks, causing the family a direct loss of nearly twenty million dollars. This wasn’t just some romantic indiscretion anymore; this was a direct violation of family trust and reputation. On the day of the table meeting, two enforcers dragged him down into the basement right in front of everyone. They broke two of his ribs with iron bars and threw him out onto the street. His name was crossed off the family records, and all his business assets and permissions were revoked. When I heard the news, all I said was, “He brought

The cool September wind swept through Old Port in San Rosa, carrying the first chill of autumn. That evening, my team and I were holding a celebration dinner at a hotel. We had just successfully secured a major warehouse renovation project. After a few rounds of drinks, the supervisor stood up and raised his glass. “Congratulations, Miss Martinez.”I smiled and clinked my glass against his. In that exact moment, my mind flashed back to the girl I had been just a few months ago—the girl standing outside that church, unable to bring herself to throw away a cheap silver chain. It felt like an entire lifetime had passed since then. When the dinner finally ended, I walked out of the hotel. I had just gotten off the phone with my chauffeur when I noticed a shadow crouched down near the back of the car.The streetlights flickered on. Hearing my footsteps, the figure slowly stood up.I frowned. “Matteo?”He looked at me, and the corner of his mouth twitched. “Serena.”We hadn’t seen e

Livia shoved him away hard. “Look at me. I’m Livia!”Her chest heaved with rage as she yelled, “How could you mistake me for her? I was the one who was here first! We only broke up because she took advantage of the situation and slid right in. She was just a passerby in your life. You and I are the ones who are supposed to be together.”She grabbed Matteo by the collar of his shirt and continued, “Look at me, and say my name again.”Matteo looked up at her. “Don’t talk about her like that.”Taken aback, Livia asked, “What did you just say?”“I said, don’t talk about Serena like that,” Matteo said, pushing her away.Livia’s back slammed into the photo wall, and she gasped from the sharp pain. However, Matteo didn’t even look at her. His eyes were glued to the wall, which was now covered with photos of him and Livia. He rushed over and started ripping the frames off the wall. “Why are these all of you? Where is Serena? She and I took a lot of photos together.”He knelt by the ent

At eleven o’clock that night, an unknown number called my phone.I picked it up, and Matteo’s voice came through the line. “You took a promotion and an overseas assignment?”“Yes.”His breathing turned shallow. “This is huge. Why didn’t you bother to tell me? We’re still engaged. Where did you go? How am I supposed to look for you?”“Matteo,” I interrupted him, “our engagement is over.”He gritted his teeth and disagreed. “I didn’t agree to that.”I let out a soft laugh. “I agreed to it, and that’s all that matters. I don’t need your permission.”He didn’t reply, leaving nothing but dead silence on the other end. Finally, he asked in a raspy voice, “So, this time, you’re actually serious?”“Of course.”“Fine,” he muttered, his voice low. “Serena, you said it yourself. Don’t you regret it.”With that, I hung up.Regret? The one who’d regret it would never be me.From that day on, Livia began posting on her social media feeds even more frequently. From jewelry to fresh flowe

The plane touched down the next day. The ocean breeze at Old Port in San Rosa carried an unfamiliar scent, and I stood by the tarmac for a long time, frozen. A black sedan sent by the Old Port branch was already parked at the curb, and the driver held the door open for me. With that, I slid inside, never once looking back.Old Port wasn’t just any regular branch. Between the port leases, hotel renovations, artwork warehousing, and outsourced security, every single operation here was backed by old-money family capos, corporate lawyers, bank representatives, and people who flat-out refused to play by the new rules. Others found it daunting, but I was familiar with this kind of game.At the long-table meeting on my first day, nobody bothered to set out a chair for me. Marco, the head of the docks, sat with his legs crossed, while Federico, the security capo, twirled a switchblade between his fingers. The representative for the hotel renovations didn’t even bother to show up.I didn’t r
