Chapter 2

Penulis: Anonymous
Madeline and Timothy had grown up together in the same neighborhood. They could be considered childhood friends.

She had started liking him as soon as she'd hit puberty. However, he only ever treated her as the younger sibling he never had, who just lived next to him.

When she learned that Timothy harbored no feelings for her, Madeline decided to hide her affection for him. She was worried that they wouldn't even be able to stay friends if she confessed to him.

After entering high school, there was a long queue of teenage girls waiting in line to confess to Timothy and hoping to get together with him because he was cold, brooding, and mysterious.

Fortunately for Madeline, Timothy was just as cold as his reputation and didn't think any of the girls at school were good enough for him. He left a trail of broken hearts wherever he went.

As they grew older, Timothy furthered his studies abroad while Madeline went to a local college. When he finally called to catch up with her, she'd then learned that he had found himself a girlfriend while studying overseas.

That was the first time Madeline experienced heartbreak. She had wanted to buy a plane ticket and fly over immediately to confront Timothy, but her parents stopped her.

When Timothy returned home, he'd come back alone. And as soon as Madeline learned that he'd broken up with his girlfriend, she could feel her heart coming back to life again. It was like she was finally able to breathe once more. She felt lighter than she'd ever been.

After having suppressed her feelings for him for such a long time, she didn't bother hiding her feelings for him anymore. She never stopped showering him with her love ever since he came back.

She did everything she could to stage coincidences and find excuses to meet him more often. She kept worrying about his well-being and often prepared breakfast for him. But that was just the beginning—she also wrote him a love letter, expressing her love and adoration for him, and telling him that she'd never once thought of giving up on him.

Her efforts eventually paid off. With how diligently she pursued Timothy, he finally agreed to get together with her a year later.

After confirming their relationship, Timothy didn't let Madeline tell anyone that they were dating. He said that it just wasn't the right time to announce it and worried that both their parents would get awkward with each other if they knew.

Madeline had felt upset about it at first. However, Timothy took great care of her and paid attention even to the smallest details about her. Gradually, Madeline forgot about it and thought of herself as the luckiest woman in the world.

Half a year ago, however, when Madeline borrowed Timothy's laptop for work, she unintentionally clicked on the wrong folder and found hundreds of photos of the same woman in it.

Was that woman Timothy's ex-girlfriend? Or worse, his side chick?

Madeline didn't know how to put her emotions into words at that time. She felt both angry and upset. However, after crying about it for a while, she decided to pretend it never happened and continued lying to herself to keep up with her facade of being the luckiest woman alive.

Still, she couldn't truly be at peace with her life as her suspicion grew. A few months ago, a model had suddenly gained immense popularity in the entertainment circle overnight, and her name was Lacey Houston. She was appointed as the official ambassador for Bloomberg Group's wedding gown business.

Madeline had been frozen for a long time when she first saw Lacey. She felt a chill creep into her body as she shivered uncontrollably. Then, it finally dawned on her that Timothy had never once truly loved her in the three years that they'd spent together. She never had a place in his heart.

Ultimately, the woman in the photos managed to cause ripples in Madeline's otherwise peaceful life.

Lacey began attending various public events with Timothy. They were almost always seen together, and everyone assumed that she was his girlfriend. But he had never once denied the rumors, nor did he offer Madeline any explanation for his actions.

It was fairly obvious that Timothy never loved her. The answer was right there, but Madeline refused to acknowledge it. Instead, she just decided to suppress her feelings.

It wasn't until today, with the revelation of "Lovelace", that Madeline finally knew for sure that her so-called happiness was nothing more than a figment of imagination in her head.

As she gradually eased out of her thoughts, the sounds coming from the bathroom also diminished.

Madeline grabbed the remote control and turned off the TV.

It had been three years, but this was the first time she'd felt exhausted. She wanted to give up.

She didn't want to be Timothy's backup plan anymore. Even more so, she didn't want to continue waiting for a man who still only had eyes for his first love.

She would soon be leaving in a month's time. She wanted to break free from the peatland that was Timothy and leave him behind for good.

Timothy didn't break into her apartment—he was able to open the front door with a set of spare keys simply because he was her landlord. The moment Madeline heard the news, she felt a wave of numbness washing over her. It turned out that Timothy had already begun to lay out his scheme the moment she returned to Loraynea. That was how she'd ended up walking into his trap. That thought made Madeline panic. A pregnant pause later, Madeline turned away from Timothy, not even wanting to spare him another look. The way she was being cold and distant toward Timothy made his heart throb in great pain.He stared at her, not knowing what to say for once.Madeline took a deep breath before saying coldly, "I've already called the police. I'm still sticking to the same perspective. Let's not meet each other anymore. You should leave while you can."Timothy panicked after hearing Madeline's words. He quickly got up and grabbed her arm. Even the way he spoke became more humble."Maddie, don't be like this. Let me apologize to you, alright? I'm sorry, Maddie. Tell me where I went wrong. Just tell me everything, okay? I'll change my ways! Please don't ignore me!"Before he could finish speaking, Madeline interjected instantly, "Things will never go back to the way they once were. Ever. That's because I no longer love you."Silence descended upon the living room for a very long time. Timothy and M

Madeline worked fast. The next day, she requested Ellis to help her scout for a new apartment after telling him her current situation.Ellis was more than happy to help her out. For the sake of Madeline's safety, he soon rented an apartment that was located in his neighborhood. She'd be able to move into that apartment two days later.Madeline treated Ellis to dinner out of gratitude. The restaurant was only a short distance away from their apartments. After dinner, both of them chatted while walking home together. After Ellis left Madeline's neighborhood, he returned to his own apartment. The thought of living in the same neighborhood as Madeline in the future made him fantasize about life after she moved in.She'd love this place… right?Ellis moved to the couch, where he picked up his phone and began texting Madeline."Are you asleep?"At that time, Madeline was still lounging on her couch in the living room while scrolling through her phone. A few days later, Madeline walked out of the research center with the files that she had just copied. That was when a black Maybach stopped before her.She glanced at it instinctively, only to meet Timothy's deep eyes.Ugh! That man really was a pest!Madeline's sleek brows were slightly bunched up at the sight of the car that blocked her way, as well as the person sitting in said car."Get in," Timothy said coolly after opening the car door. But Madeline didn't move an inch. She asked coldly, "What do you want?"Timothy didn't say anything at all. He just stared at her. A while later, he finally repeated his words."Get. In.""If you have something to say, you can say it to me here. I don't want—"Before Madeline could finish her sentence, she felt a strong force pulling her into the car. The next thing she knew, she fell into Timothy's arms. Her body stiffened up instantly upon contact.Timothy's scent remained the same. It was familiar to her as always. But Madeline frown

Ellis's heart sank instantly. He put down his wine glass, a look of surprise evident on his face. Almost immediately, his legs began moving on their own. Soon, he found himself chasing after Madeline. In comparison to the boisterous ballroom where the guests drank and danced, the lobby was a lot more vacant. Occasionally, a patron or two could be seen wandering down the corridor.Although the thermostat in the lobby was turned up quite high, Madeline still felt chilly thanks to her exposed shoulders. She shielded her chest with her hands that carried her purse and kept her lips pursed while making her way toward the washroom located at the end of the corridor."Madeline!" Ellis called out to her from behind.Madeline stopped in her tracks, giving Ellis a chance to reach her side in just a few steps. Naturally, he saw the ruined gown for himself.Ellis wanted to compliment Madeline's gown at first, but the sight lodged the compliment in his throat. Clearly, he was stunned by what h

With a dark expression, Timothy stared down at the photos sent by his assistant in an office building located in Cyberton. Those photos featured Madeline and Ellis.Timothy continued scrolling through the photos, his expression blank. Finally, he stopped on a particular photo. It was a photo of Madeline and Ellis sitting in the Ferris wheel's compartment while admiring the snowy scenery. The thing was, Madeline was doing just that. Ellis, on the other hand… was staring at her.Although the photo was a little blurry, anyone could still tell that Ellis was staring at Madeline with pure affection in his eyes. This photo reminded Timothy of a particular time when Madeline had suggested riding the Ferris wheel with him when they were still dating. Unfortunately, Timothy had acrophobia, so he was unable to ride the Ferris wheel at all.Men were all prideful creatures. Timothy refused to let Madeline find out about his phobia—or worse, witness his frightened side. That was why he often u
