Chapter 315: The First Week Was Awkward

Damien pulled the overnight bag out of the closet that night and dropped it on the bed like it might bite him. "One night," he said. "I own a perfectly reasonable amount of clothing for one night."

"Then why are there four shirts?"

"Contingencies." He held up two ties. I took the gray shirt out of the pile before he could fold it, the soft one I'd stolen so many times, and hugged it to my chest. "That one's mine."

"It's the one I'm wearing tomorrow."

"Then you can have it back tomorrow," I said

"I want to be there," Damien said, setting his phone face down on the cushion. "I'll check whether the meetings can move. I'm not promising, and I'm not going to pretend I can rescue it." I nodded, and let him have the sentence without softening it for him. "It disappoints me," I admitted, "and I'd rather say so than act fine about it.""Good," he said, and pulled my feet into his lap, rubbing his thumb along the arch. We didn't talk about it again that night, and the quiet between us was warm rather than tense.Saturday morning we ate a slow breakfast at the counter, his first trip finally behind him and no alarm in sight. I stole half his toast while he pretended not to notice, and he stole a piece of my fruit in revenge. "I was glad you complained on the call," I told him. "I liked hearing how the week actually felt, even when you sounded miserable.""I didn't enjoy every part of it," he said. "Accepting the role didn't make me enjoy every part of it.""I hated the empty house," I

He found his charger eventually, under the pillow, and we packed the rest in a few minutes. The notice was short, and neither of us pretended it wasn't abrupt, but neither of us treated it as a betrayal either.Thursday morning we were up before the usual alarm, both groggy, and breakfast was toast eaten standing up because his car was due in twenty minutes. The kitc

"Yes," I said. "I think we can." I tucked my hand against his chest. "I'll miss you sometimes, and I'll probably dislike a few weeks. But yes.""That's a fairly honest yes.""It's the only kind I have." I kissed his shoulder. "I'm answering about us, Damien. The job is yours to decide."He let out a long breath I hadn't known he was holding, and some of the stiffness left him. He pulled me closer, and we lay there with the lamp finally off, his fingers moving idly along my arm. "I'm relieved, and I'm also hungry," he admitted."You ate an entire dinner.""I was nervous. It didn't count." I laughed against his neck, and we fell asleep tangled together, neither of us trying to settle every future week.Wednesday morning, he stood at the counter buttoning the same cuff three times. "You've done that wrong," I said, stepping in to fix it. His coffee sat untouched beside the unfolded laundry from last night, and I steered his hand toward the mug without comment. He was nervous, and I didn'

"What are you still deciding?" I asked, keeping his hand in mine across the table. He looked at our fingers for a moment. "Most of what drew me is still in it. I just hate that I'd have to trust other people with details I want to shape myself." He rubbed his thumb along my knuckle. "There's a hiring decision for the smaller team's first project. I'd read the shortlist and know exactly who I'd pick, and in this version I'd give them my view, then let them make the choice.""And if they choose wrong?""Then I find out the way everyone else does." He laughed, short and unhappy. "It's a character flaw. I've been told.""By whom?""By me. Repeatedly."I laughed, and we stood together to clear the table, because neither of us could keep sitting still. I carried the plates to the sink, and he followed with the glasses, and then he wandered into the other room and came back with the basket of clean laundry we'd both been ignoring since the weekend."How does it feel to you?" he asked, holdin

I slipped the sticky note into my work bag Tuesday morning, and Damien noticed from the doorway, a cup of coffee in each hand. "What's that?""Claire's weekly update. I'm giving it to her.""Do you want to?" he asked, handing me my cup, no weight in the question."It doesn't need to be mine anymore," I said, and he nodded, and left it there. He didn't supervise it, and I was glad.He was fastening his cuffs when I leaned against his back and pressed my cheek between his shoulder blades. "You never finished that film," I said into his shirt."You fell asleep at the part with the boat.""I was resting my eyes.""For forty minutes." He turned in my arms and kissed me, and I stole a second one before letting him go. We were still weighing a difficult decision, but the easy pleasure of each other had come back, and I walked to the car already looking forward to the evening.Claire was waiting in my office with her copy of our three lines. "Right," she said. "So the figures I already collec

Damien didn't answer right away. He turned my hand over in his, tracing the lines of my palm as if the answer might be written there. "I might," he said. "I think I might still want it. I just need to know what I'd be giving up first.""Okay.""I wanted to build it myself. This version means other people make decisions I might have made differently, and it moves at a pace I can't set." He let out a breath. "That sounds petty when I say it to someone who's just spent a week not wanting to give things up.""It doesn't sound petty." I kept my hand in his. I didn't offer him the regional visits again, though the old reflex flickered. "Would it still include the part that made you light up on Wednesday?""The two divisions, yes. Bringing them together." He frowned, thinking. "I'd still lead it. But say there's a decision about how the smaller team restructures its first project. In the original version I'd sit in the room and shape it line by line. In this one I'd give them the goal and tr
