Chapter 1

Shay's POV

I stared at Ryan Holt's phone after the screen went dark again. I hesitated for all of three seconds before entering Winnie Lowe's birthday as the passcode.

The phone unlocked.

After Ryan and Winnie broke up, Winnie changed her number and disappeared completely. That long string of digits Ryan kept typing from memory was the only way he still had to reach her.

The call rang for barely three seconds before someone answered.

I hadn't even had time to say, "I'm planning to divorce Ryan," when Winnie's choked, tearful voice burst through the speaker.

"Ryan! You finally called me!

"I knew you couldn't really let me go. We love each other so much we'd give up our lives for each other.

"How could you just leave like that? We said we'd face everything together. You have ALS. It's not an immediate death sentence. And even if it were, I'd still stay with you. I'd die with you if I had to.

"I know you don't want to burden me, but... I'm really scared Ms. Moore won't take good care of you. What does she know how to do besides get jealous and act crazy?"

Her sobs mingled with the faint static on the line.

The truth hit me like a crack of thunder.

All at once, I remembered that night six months ago.

Ryan had stood in front of me looking exhausted, his voice hoarse. Then he tore up the divorce papers and said, "Shay, can we not get divorced?"

By then, the marriage had already drained me.

From the day I caught him cheating to the day I forced him to end things with Winnie, I'd behaved like someone possessed. I told people everywhere we went that he'd betrayed me.

I slapped him twice in front of his parents. I made him get on his knees and swear he'd never betray me again.

Every time he brought me another set of divorce papers, I tore them up.

I clung to the marriage with everything I had.

Ryan and I had grown up together. We'd had twenty years between us, and I kept telling myself Winnie was just one wrong turn he'd taken.

I believed we still had a chance.

But when Ryan finally put that chance in front of me himself, I lost my nerve.

"Why?" I asked.

Ryan stayed silent for a long time.

In the end, he didn't explain.

Only now did I finally understand.

He was sick.

He couldn't bear the thought of burdening Winnie.

But burdening me was apparently fine.

I thought the realization would hurt. I thought it would tear through me the way it had the day I discovered his affair.

But strangely, it didn't.

While Ryan had spent the past six months trying to get over Winnie, I had been slowly getting over him too.

A bitter smile tugged at my lips. I ended the call and deleted it from his call history.

Ryan had just finished showering when he stopped behind me.

His voice was a little hoarse. "Who were you calling?"

"Someone I just met," I said casually.

Ryan paused before replying, just as casually, "Oh. She sounded a lot like someone I used to know."

I lowered my eyes, hiding the mockery in them.

Even with the shower running, he'd recognized Winnie's voice.

What else could that be but love?

I must have been out of my mind six months ago. I'd clung desperately to a cheating man who didn't deserve it, and I had nearly committed the rest of my life to caring for someone who was dying.

When I got up, Ryan stepped forward and reached out as if he wanted to pull me into his arms.

I evaded him.

Then I looked him straight in the eye.

"I have a physical tomorrow. Do you want to come with me?"

His hands paused in midair. A moment later, his gaze shifted.

"I just had a checkup last month. I'll skip it."

"How did it go?"

"I'm perfectly healthy."

Ryan smiled faintly, took my hand, and gave it a gentle squeeze.

"Don't stress yourself out. Even if something is wrong, we can face it together."

His eyes flickered, almost as though he were testing me.

"If something ever happened to me, you'd stay with me too, wouldn't you?"

No, Ryan.

I wouldn't.

The Shay Moore who had once loved you with everything she had would have stayed.

But the Shay Moore you came back to because you needed someone to clean up the mess wouldn't.

I calmly pulled my hand from his and left his question unanswered.

"Let's get some sleep. I have a physical tomorrow, so I can't stay up late."

Ryan frowned and instinctively stepped toward me, looking as if he wanted to say something else.

Before he could, his phone suddenly started ringing.

He looked at the screen once, and his expression changed immediately.

I knew at once who it was.

Winnie was calling him back.

Thunder exploded outside, and a flash of white light lit up Ryan's face.

For six months, his eyes had been quiet and dull.

Now, for the first time, they came alive with a brightness I'd never seen before.

He stood frozen in the living room for so long that I almost thought he was going to let the call ring out.

Then he answered.

A second later, he grabbed his umbrella and coat and headed for the door.

"Something urgent came up at work. I need to go in."

He didn't even wait for me to respond before the door slammed shut behind him.

I stood alone in the dark living room for a long time before I went into the study, opened the bottom drawer, and pulled out an old divorce agreement.

Ryan had signed it back when he'd been desperate to get rid of me.

Under the terms of the agreement, he would leave the marriage with nothing.

I wondered if Winnie would still be willing to take care of him once she found out he'd be broke and disabled.

From that day on, Ryan seemed to disappear from my life completely. That didn't surprise me. He cared too much about appearances, and after I'd thrown him out of my shop so bluntly, there was no way his pride would let him come back. What I didn't expect was that the next time I heard anything about him, it would be from Elizabeth.Elizabeth and I hadn't spoken in a long time, so when I saw her familiar figure outside my shop, I stood there stunned for a moment. Our families had been close for generations, and she had always treated me well. There was no way I could simply pretend I hadn't seen her.I hurried over."Mrs. Holt, what are you doing here?"A rueful smile appeared on her face."Shay, why are you being so formal with me now? Even if things are over between you and Ryan, I've always thought of you as a daughter."I pressed my lips together for a moment."Elizabeth."She smiled, but tears immediately gathered in her eyes.I brought her inside and set one of my homemade dessert

I poured Ryan a glass of warm water. He held the glass between both hands, looking hesitant. Several moments passed, and he still didn't say anything.Eventually, I spoke first."You're not here to ask me where Winnie is, are you?"I haven't had any contact with her in a long time, and after everything that's happened, I'm certainly not going to do anything to her because of you. "So if you're here hoping I'll tell you where she went, you've come to the wrong person."Surprise flickered across Ryan's face.Apparently, he hadn't expected that to be the first thing on my mind. His hand tightened around the glass, trembling slightly."Shay, you've got the wrong idea. I don't think you had anything to do with it."I saw Winnie when she left."Ryan closed his eyes, and a faint, bitter smile touched his lips."I asked her why she was leaving. She shoved me to the ground and told me that if I wasn't going to leave her any money when I died, then why should she waste her time taking care of a

The next day, my dessert shop officially opened for business. We weren't exactly flooded with customers on the first day. Most of the people who came in were friends or friends of friends.I did receive plenty of congratulatory flower arrangements, though, including one surprisingly expensive one from Ryan.My best friend, Claire Bennett, stared at it with a complicated expression."So this is really it between you two? You're actually done with him for good?"Shay, you loved Ryan so much. Are you really able to let him go?"He's marrying another woman next Tuesday."For a moment, I found myself lost in thought. She had known me for years and understood better than almost anyone how much Ryan and I had been through together. She'd once told me, "If you two ever break up, I'm never believing in love again."When Ryan's affair first came to light, she'd been even more shocked than I was."Are you sure there's not some kind of mistake?"She probably never thought she'd see the day I truly

The two weeks before the court hearing passed in a blur as I threw myself into getting my dessert shop ready.I'd loved baking since high school, but Ryan never had much of a sweet tooth and rarely bothered to taste anything I made. After years of that, even I'd started to believe I simply wasn't very good at it.It wasn't until I moved out and rented a small apartment of my own that I started baking again. I gave some of my desserts to the neighbors, and the response was so positive that, for the first time, I seriously considered opening a shop of my own.The storefront I found was small and tucked deep inside a side street, with a coffee shop right next door.Unfortunately, the coffee shop was barely hanging on. From what I'd heard, it probably wouldn't survive much longer. When the owner found out I was planning to open next door, she even tried to talk me out of it."If you can still change locations, do it now. Seriously. There's almost no foot traffic here. On a good day, we're

Shay's POVI didn't have to wait long before I saw Ryan again. Before I left, my attorney told me, "The mediation is mostly a formality. If you'd rather not attend, I can handle it for you."I thought about it for a long time before deciding to go."If nothing else, it'll be a proper goodbye to that part of my life."When I arrived at the mediation room, I saw Ryan for the first time in what felt like forever. He wasn't in a wheelchair. Instead, he came in slowly with Winnie supporting him.I looked up calmly and met his eyes, then gave a slight nod toward the chair across from me."Sit."Ryan's gaze stayed fixed on me. After a long silence, he finally spoke, his expression complicated."It's been a while."He sat down across from me, with Winnie pressed close to his side. She watched me warily. "Ms. Moore, I suggest you don't try anything. No matter what happens, I'm staying by Ryan's side."A trace of mockery flashed through my eyes.Would she still say that if Ryan really walked awa

"Leave with nothing?"The words stopped Ryan cold. A violent coughing fit seized him, and a flush rose over his otherwise pale face."You..." His voice came out rough and strained. "Are you joking?"He couldn't believe it. Shay hadn't just divorced him. She wanted him to leave the marriage with nothing. For the first time, panic overwhelmed every other emotion. He hated the feeling of losing control, and with nowhere else to direct it, he slammed his fist into the headboard. The skin across his knuckles split open. The court mediator's stern voice came through the phone. "Mr. Holt, I'm a mediator with the court. This isn't something I would joke about."If you have no objection, please come to the courthouse tomorrow at three for mediation."Ryan's lips trembled, but no words came out."Mr. Holt? Are you still there?"In the end, Winnie took the phone from his hand."Hello, I'm Ryan Holt's girlfriend. I'll bring him tomorrow."After hanging up, she took Ryan's hand and spoke with a hin
