Chapter 2

Autor: Lucky Jojo
I signed my name at the bottom of the divorce agreement, taking my time with every letter, then sent it to my attorney.

She quickly confirmed what I needed to know. "The agreement is valid. Once the mandatory thirty-day waiting period is over, the divorce can be finalized.

"If your husband refuses to transfer the assets as agreed, you can take him to court.

"With this agreement in place, I'd estimate your chances of winning at around ninety percent."

I thanked her and had just ended the call when a loud commotion erupted outside.

The next second, the bedroom door flew open with a bang.

Ryan stood in the darkness, soaked to the skin, his expression black with fury.

"Shay Moore, why did you use my phone behind my back?"

I paused, then calmly looked up at him.

His eyes locked on mine.

"I haven't contacted Winnie in months!" he demanded. "I did exactly what you wanted. I cut her out of my life and came back to this marriage. So why can't you leave her alone?"

Ryan stalked toward me. Lightning flashed outside, making the look in his eyes even more intimidating.

"Do you have any idea what happened because of that call? Winnie came rushing out to find me and fell so badly she couldn't even get up!"

His accusation was so ridiculous that I laughed.

"She fell, and somehow that's my fault too? What, did I push her?"

Ryan's hands curled into fists.

He looked furious.

I rose to my feet and met his gaze, speaking each word slowly and clearly.

"Since we're talking about it, let me correct one thing.

"I didn't call her because I wanted to do anything to her.

"I called because I wanted to tell her that I'm divorcing you."

Ryan froze.

Thunder rumbled outside, and the room sank into pitch darkness.

Behind him, Winnie limped into view.

The moment she heard what I'd said, excitement flashed across her face.

She opened her mouth, clearly about to say something, but Ryan gave a scornful laugh before she could.

"Shay, you don't need to tell such childish lies.

"You think threatening me with divorce is going to make me back down? Everyone knows how you practically lost your mind trying to keep this marriage together.

"Do you really expect me to believe you now?"

Winnie stopped short.

Then she stepped up behind him and wrapped her arms around his waist.

Her voice turned feather-soft as she tried to soothe him.

"That's enough, Ryan. Don't say anything else. You'll only hurt Ms. Moore.

"I'm fine, so don't blame her. I only fell because I wasn't watching where I was going."

Then her voice trembled.

"It's my fault. I missed you too much. The second I saw your call, I couldn't control myself anymore...

"I wanted to see you. I wanted to see you so badly."

Ryan finally turned around and pulled her hard into his embrace.

He held her with such care, such fierce tenderness, that I realized I'd never once been held that way by him in all our years together.

My gaze moved past their tangled figures to the mess outside the bedroom.

Ryan and Winnie were both drenched from the rain. They had been in such a hurry when they came inside that neither of them had even changed their shoes, trekking mud all over the floor.

More than a dozen overlapping footprints stained Ryan's favorite white rug.

Ryan was obsessive about cleanliness.

He couldn't stand so much as a speck of dust or a single stray hair anywhere in the house.

Once, after I'd injured my leg in an accident, I'd asked him to pick up my shoes for me. He had covered them with tissues before touching them, his face twisted with obvious disgust.

And that white rug was even more precious to him.

His late grandmother had made it by hand, and it was one of the few things she'd left him.

He never let me step on it with slippers.

Not even brand-new ones.

But now...

One muddy footprint after another covered the white fabric.

Looking at them, I suddenly thought of our marriage.

Once something had been stained this badly, no amount of scrubbing could make it clean again.

I laughed bitterly and looked away.

By then, Ryan had already lifted Winnie into his arms.

Without the slightest hesitation, he took her mud-covered foot in his hand and looked at me.

"Bring me the first-aid kit."

He paused, then continued before I could respond.

"If you hadn't called her, Winnie wouldn't have rushed out to find me, and she wouldn't have gotten hurt.

"So whatever you're upset about, keep it to yourself.

"Starting today, Winnie is staying here until she recovers."

He lowered his gaze, hiding the emotion in his eyes.

"Don't worry. This won't affect our marriage.

"Once her injury heals, I'll take her back to Jadebrook myself. After that, I won't contact her again."

Then he looked back at me.

"And please don't pull another stupid stunt like this. You're only making it more obvious how jealous you are."

From that day on, Ryan seemed to disappear from my life completely. That didn't surprise me. He cared too much about appearances, and after I'd thrown him out of my shop so bluntly, there was no way his pride would let him come back. What I didn't expect was that the next time I heard anything about him, it would be from Elizabeth.Elizabeth and I hadn't spoken in a long time, so when I saw her familiar figure outside my shop, I stood there stunned for a moment. Our families had been close for generations, and she had always treated me well. There was no way I could simply pretend I hadn't seen her.I hurried over."Mrs. Holt, what are you doing here?"A rueful smile appeared on her face."Shay, why are you being so formal with me now? Even if things are over between you and Ryan, I've always thought of you as a daughter."I pressed my lips together for a moment."Elizabeth."She smiled, but tears immediately gathered in her eyes.I brought her inside and set one of my homemade dessert

I poured Ryan a glass of warm water. He held the glass between both hands, looking hesitant. Several moments passed, and he still didn't say anything.Eventually, I spoke first."You're not here to ask me where Winnie is, are you?"I haven't had any contact with her in a long time, and after everything that's happened, I'm certainly not going to do anything to her because of you. "So if you're here hoping I'll tell you where she went, you've come to the wrong person."Surprise flickered across Ryan's face.Apparently, he hadn't expected that to be the first thing on my mind. His hand tightened around the glass, trembling slightly."Shay, you've got the wrong idea. I don't think you had anything to do with it."I saw Winnie when she left."Ryan closed his eyes, and a faint, bitter smile touched his lips."I asked her why she was leaving. She shoved me to the ground and told me that if I wasn't going to leave her any money when I died, then why should she waste her time taking care of a

The next day, my dessert shop officially opened for business. We weren't exactly flooded with customers on the first day. Most of the people who came in were friends or friends of friends.I did receive plenty of congratulatory flower arrangements, though, including one surprisingly expensive one from Ryan.My best friend, Claire Bennett, stared at it with a complicated expression."So this is really it between you two? You're actually done with him for good?"Shay, you loved Ryan so much. Are you really able to let him go?"He's marrying another woman next Tuesday."For a moment, I found myself lost in thought. She had known me for years and understood better than almost anyone how much Ryan and I had been through together. She'd once told me, "If you two ever break up, I'm never believing in love again."When Ryan's affair first came to light, she'd been even more shocked than I was."Are you sure there's not some kind of mistake?"She probably never thought she'd see the day I truly

The two weeks before the court hearing passed in a blur as I threw myself into getting my dessert shop ready.I'd loved baking since high school, but Ryan never had much of a sweet tooth and rarely bothered to taste anything I made. After years of that, even I'd started to believe I simply wasn't very good at it.It wasn't until I moved out and rented a small apartment of my own that I started baking again. I gave some of my desserts to the neighbors, and the response was so positive that, for the first time, I seriously considered opening a shop of my own.The storefront I found was small and tucked deep inside a side street, with a coffee shop right next door.Unfortunately, the coffee shop was barely hanging on. From what I'd heard, it probably wouldn't survive much longer. When the owner found out I was planning to open next door, she even tried to talk me out of it."If you can still change locations, do it now. Seriously. There's almost no foot traffic here. On a good day, we're

Shay's POVI didn't have to wait long before I saw Ryan again. Before I left, my attorney told me, "The mediation is mostly a formality. If you'd rather not attend, I can handle it for you."I thought about it for a long time before deciding to go."If nothing else, it'll be a proper goodbye to that part of my life."When I arrived at the mediation room, I saw Ryan for the first time in what felt like forever. He wasn't in a wheelchair. Instead, he came in slowly with Winnie supporting him.I looked up calmly and met his eyes, then gave a slight nod toward the chair across from me."Sit."Ryan's gaze stayed fixed on me. After a long silence, he finally spoke, his expression complicated."It's been a while."He sat down across from me, with Winnie pressed close to his side. She watched me warily. "Ms. Moore, I suggest you don't try anything. No matter what happens, I'm staying by Ryan's side."A trace of mockery flashed through my eyes.Would she still say that if Ryan really walked awa

"Leave with nothing?"The words stopped Ryan cold. A violent coughing fit seized him, and a flush rose over his otherwise pale face."You..." His voice came out rough and strained. "Are you joking?"He couldn't believe it. Shay hadn't just divorced him. She wanted him to leave the marriage with nothing. For the first time, panic overwhelmed every other emotion. He hated the feeling of losing control, and with nowhere else to direct it, he slammed his fist into the headboard. The skin across his knuckles split open. The court mediator's stern voice came through the phone. "Mr. Holt, I'm a mediator with the court. This isn't something I would joke about."If you have no objection, please come to the courthouse tomorrow at three for mediation."Ryan's lips trembled, but no words came out."Mr. Holt? Are you still there?"In the end, Winnie took the phone from his hand."Hello, I'm Ryan Holt's girlfriend. I'll bring him tomorrow."After hanging up, she took Ryan's hand and spoke with a hin
