Chapter 1

After my death, my soul didn't dissipate like it should have.

Instead, I lingered and watched as my remains were slowly discovered from dumpsters and riverbanks, which sent the city spiraling into panic.

The case drew so much attention that those in charge brought in my brother, Nathan Slade, a detective, to lead the investigation.

I felt a pang of guilt, realizing that I'd once again caused Nathan trouble, even in death. A shiver ran through my spine as I watched him examine my reconstructed corpse with a frown.

"Any details on the body? Has the time of death been confirmed?" he asked.

Harlan Graves from the support team rubbed his temples in exhaustion. "Preliminary findings suggest the victim was a female in her early 20s, dead for at least 48 hours.

"The body is in bad shape, so we can't extract any useful information for now. DNA results will take at least two days.

"The victim suffered unimaginable torture before death. The killer chopped off her limbs to stop her from fighting back while she was alive."

A stunned, horrified silence fell over the scene. No one could believe what they'd just heard, as such brutal means were too much to process.

"Monster," someone muttered.

"Poor child, god knows what she must've gone through," another murmured in pity.

Nathan slammed on the table furiously and said, "I'll find out who did this and make sure they pay!"

Lawrence Finch, his mentor and Dad's old friend, gave him a sympathetic pat. There was a slight regret in his voice as he quietly said, "You've got your hands full, so you'll probably have to miss Rosie's graduation."

After Mom and Dad died, Lawrence had taken care of us like family and taught Nathan everything from tracking clues to catching a killer.

At the mention of my name, Nathan's expression hardened with a frown. "Don't bring her up. She's nothing but bad luck.

"There's no way I'm going to her graduation. I'm going to Gemma's."

His words cut deep.

After our parents died, Nathan loathed me to the core and blamed me. He said I was the reason they were gone. Then, he threw me out and refused to acknowledge me as his family.

Later, he saved a young lady during a field case. After learning that she was an orphan, he took her in and called her his sister.

And just like that, I became an "orphan" too.

Even right up until my last breath, Nathan was still upset that I'd make him miss Gemma Carter's graduation and that, because of me, her reputation got dragged through the mud.

If he knew that I was the body laying on the ground, he probably wouldn't hesitate to walk away. After all, no one wished I was dead more than he did.

Well, now that I was gone, he was probably thrilled.

Lawrence suddenly punched him in the chest and chided, "How could you say that? Rosie's a thoughtful kid. She's worried you wouldn't like her, so she's been bringing you lunch every day, without a word.

"Open your eyes, you ungrateful brat."

Nathan just scoffed. "Like I care. Anyway, let's stop talking about her, Lawrence. We've got real work to discuss.

"Any missing persons reports?"

His assistant, Orson Marsh, shook his head and said, "No, nothing in the last two days from this neighborhood."

"Seriously? This lady has gone missing for days, so how could no one in the family have noticed? What kind of irresponsible family is that?" Nathan grumbled.

Later, he headed out with the others for lunch.

A thought seemed to hit Lawrence, and he asked, "Why hasn't Rosie brought you lunch these days?"

"She probably couldn't keep up the act anymore. Figures," Nathan said as he laughed in disdain.

Lawrence got mad after seeing his reaction. "No way. She's come rain or shine and never missed a day in years.

"Something must've happened. You should call and check on her."

Nathan annoyedly replied, "Don't bother, Lawrence. This is just another one of her games.

"She called me the other day, probably for some nonsense. I told her to come to Gemma's graduation, and she refused. Guess she's just sulking now."

Lawrence was about to argue when Nathan's phone rang.

With a glance at the caller ID, the latter's frown disappeared, and his voice softened instantly as he answered.

"Who are you? Why'd you kill Rosie?"In the face of his questioning, she smirked and stayed silent, refusing to say a word.Nathan furiously slammed the table and yelled, "Don't think keeping quiet means I can't find out the truth!"Moments later, a cop brought in her file. "Your real name's Lena Crowe, and your father's Alistair Crowe? You're the daughter of the man my dad shot during that robbery?" He stared at her, stunned.Gemma let out a soft, mocking laugh. "That's right. Thanks for taking care of me all these years, I guess. "To see you abandon your sister for me, I'm sure my dad will be proud if he's watching me."Nathan looked like he still couldn't believe it. "So, you got close to me on pu

Perhaps Gemma was bold enough to snatch my locket because Nathan had her back. He'd believe anything she said without question. That was how she kept sowing discord between me and Nathan and throwing dirt on my name over and over again.Even now, he still trusted her.It took a long silence before Nathan finally said, "We'll look into her in secret. Tomorrow night, I'll meet her as usual so she won't get suspicious."But Gemma couldn't even wait until tomorrow. Right after Nathan spoke, his phone rang with her call. Her voice was filled with worry and fear as it came through the line."Nathan, I heard what happened to Rosie… Are you okay?"Nathan glanced at Lawrence and flatly replied, "Yeah. I'm fine."She paused before cautiously saying, "They haven't caught the killer yet, and I'm scared. Can you come home to keep me company tonight?"Lawrence gave him a nod, so he said, "Sure. I'm on my way."After he hung up, Lawrence reminded him, "Stay alert and call us if anything ha

"Can't you ever go a day without drama? Gemma's graduation is at the end of the month. Miss it, and I swear I'll kill you!"With that, Nathan hung up the phone, cutting off my pleas for help and my last hope of survival.Jaxton had laughed. "Your brother cares more about my sister than he ever did about you. He wants you gone, so let me help him out."His knife hacked down, and everything went dark.…Orson followed Nathan around and reported the latest investigation findings. "We've collected the blood samples and sent them for analysis. It shouldn't take long for the results to be released."Nathan crouched down and carefully scanned the floor for anything the killer might have left behind. And I wanted to scream so badly that the killer was right beside him. After returning to the office, Harlan met him at the door with a grave expression."The results are in. The victim is Rosanne Slade."Nathan staggered before he stared at the report, shaking his head. "No, this can't be

Nathan froze, and confusion flickered in his gaze. "What are you talking about? Why would you have Rosanne's phone?""Nathan, we found the crime scene, and the phone's here. You should come in person."The voice on the line hit him like a blow, his body swaying slightly. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out of it. It was as if something had lodged in his throat.Lawrence gave his sleeve an anxious tug. "Don't just stand there! Go!"Snapping out of it, Nathan turned to Gemma and said, "You go home. I'll come to you in a bit."With tears brimming in her eyes, Gemma reached out to stop him, but her hands merely grabbed at air.It was my first time seeing Nathan leave her for me.As I watched him hurry away, complex emotions twisted in my chest. Nathan exchanged a look with Lawrence.Looking at the wailing teen in front of him, Nathan pressed his lips into a thin line. He was unsure of how to break what could very well be devastating news."We just found an unidentified female body nearly…" he said at last, his voice low and hesitant. The teen's knees buckled. He collapsed over as he murmured, "No… It can't be…"Someone helped him up to record a formal statement when his phone rang. A cheerful female voice chirped through the speaker. "Max, where are you? I took a two-day bus home to surprise you, but why aren't you home?""Ava! I thought something happened to you! I'm coming home right now!" He wiped his tears and swiftly turned to thank Nathan and Lawrence before bolting off.Nathan and I both exhaled in relief. As they tried to dig deeper into the case, every detective who'd been dispatched returned empty-handed. None of them brought back a single useful clue.Nathan's frown deepened as the clock ticked by. The ca

  • He Cried When I Died   Chapter 2

"Hey, Gem, did you miss me?"Nathan had such a gentle smile on his face that I knew it had to be Gemma without looking at the caller ID.He used to be the brother who loved me more than anything and would give me the whole world if he could. But now, all his attention was on that manipulative orphan he'd taken in."Hang on, Gem. I'll come home as soon as I wrap things up here… Got it. I promise I'll take care of myself," he rambled on. Whatever Gemma said next darkened his expression, and his voice turned cold. "Don't worry, I'll make sure Rosanne admits she stole your thesis. If she won't own up to it, I'll beat it out of her."There, there. Don't be upset now. Stay home until I get back. Things aren't safe outside right now, and if you ever have to go out, let me know, alright?"A hollow, bitter laugh escaped me as I listened to Nathan's soft reassurances. He was my biological brother, yet he'd never believed a word I said and trusted some outsider he'd picked off the street.
