The party went on. The air was thick and heavy.

“You’ve been gone two years, Alora. You probably don’t know,” a Beta sidled up to me, his eyes flicking between me and the couch.

“Those two are the Council’s golden couple now. No Goddess-fated bullshit. Just real love.”

“Don’t be silly.” Clara blushed, giving him a light tap. “We’re not mates.”

As she said it, Jaxon’s hand was resting on the small of her back. His hand tightened, fingers pressing into the fabric of her dress, pulling her that half-inch closer into his side.

A silent, public claim. She didn’t push him away.

“It’s just a matter of time, right?” someone else jeered.

Jaxon didn’t deny it. His fingers tightened again.

I stood by the bar, my fingertips cold against the glass.

My eyes landed just below Clara’s collarbone.

A moonstone. A silver wolf’s head. And on the clasp, a tiny, old scratch.

My mother's moonstone. The only thing I had left of her.

Two years ago, when I asked him to make us public, he tore it from my neck in front of half the pack. My rogue-born blood was a stain to the Elders. And Jaxon needed the elite families' support to win his Alpha Council seat.

The chain broke the skin. Blood dripped into the hollow of my collarbone. He said he was keeping it until I learned my place.

And now, Clara was wearing it.

“Alora.” Clara walked over with two glasses, her eyes glistening. “I’ve always wanted to clear the air. That spot at the academy… I didn’t steal it. It was the Elders’ vote. If I had known you wanted it so badly…”

“I’m not drinking.”

Her hand froze mid-air. Her eyes turned red on cue.

“…Did I do something to offend you? I just want to make things right.”

“Clara, don’t beg.” Jaxon frowned. “She’s been in the North too long. She’s gone feral.”

A burly wolf slammed his glass on the table.

“Cut the crap, Alora! Everyone knows you’re obsessed with Alpha Jaxon! You think crawling into his bed during his Rut five years ago makes you special?”

The room went dead silent. Everyone waited for the punchline to my joke of a life.

No one here knew. No one knew I was his true mate.

He thought it was too much trouble. He let them all believe it was just a cheap one-night stand.

I stared straight at Jaxon.

Just one word from him. Just one single shred of defense.

But he gave me nothing.

Jaxon released Clara. He grabbed his whiskey, walked over, and tapped his glass against the guy's. Clink.

“You’re right,” Jaxon said. A cruel smile on his lips.

I knew he was punishing me. Two years of my silence from the North had bruised his Alpha ego. He wanted to see my eyes fill with tears. He wanted me to break, to beg for his affection like I used to.

But those two words… “You’re right.” They sliced right through the bond that had ached for five long years.

I remembered him calling the mating ceremony I craved “meaningless.”

So this is what we were. Not even a joke.

I stood up and walked to the door. I didn’t look back.

Two a.m. Thunderstorm.

The wind threw icy rain against the steps. I pulled out my phone. Called an Uber.

Heavy footsteps behind me. The scent of cedar and musk hit me like a wall. His Alpha presence, closing in.

“I’ll take you home,” Jaxon’s voice was ice in the thunder.

It wasn’t a question. It was a command.

“Not necessary,” I said, my face blank.

He took a step closer, his presence suffocating. Cedar and musk. Two years ago, that scent would have made my knees weak.

“Alora, cut the attitude. How long are you going to keep this up?”

A black SUV cut through the rain, stopping at the bottom of the steps.

I didn’t hesitate. I pulled open the back door and slid inside.

Jaxon’s face darkened.

He didn’t stop me. He didn’t follow.

He just stood there. So sure I’d break. So sure I’d roll down the window, crying, giving in, just like I always had for the last five years.

I met his arrogant gaze. And pressed the button for the window.

The glass slid up, silent and smooth. It sealed his arrogant face, and the entire storm, completely out of my world.

The car drove off into the night.

In the past, I would have looked back.

This time, I didn't.

A sharp ‘beep’ broke the quiet of the command center. The Council's highest-level red alert forced itself onto my main screen. My second-in-command stared, his eyes wide. “Alpha Alora! Look at the network! Jaxon just broadcasted a public confession across the entire pack-link!”I leaned back in my chair. My face was blank as I glanced at the glaring red-and-black text. In the long message, he had shed every last bit of his pride as a leader. He confessed to all the packs that I was his one true Mate. He admitted that for five years, his own selfishness had made him hide me away. He admitted he had allowed others to humiliate and hurt me. He even exposed his ugliest side. Confessing that at the annual gala, he had used his Alpha Command to force me into submission. At the end of the announcement that set the entire network on fire, he set the record straight: “Alora was never the one clinging. It was I who failed the Moon Goddess’s gift.”I closed the screen. I felt nothing. Just

The blizzard raged. I didn’t even give him a second glance as I walked right past him. Jaxon didn’t reach out to stop me. He just followed behind me. He kept a careful distance, stumbling through the deep snow. I stopped at the crossroads ahead. I turned and looked at him. “What do you want?” My voice was ice. Jaxon stopped instantly, a few feet away. Snow covered his shoulders. His freezing body was tense. “I took you for granted. I expected you to just bow to me,” he said. His eyes were full of a pathetic need to please. “Now I know I have no right to ask you for anything. I just… I just want to be closer to you. Even if you never forgive me. Just watching from a distance is enough.”He took a sharp breath of frigid air. His voice shook even more. “For those five years… I hid you away for my own ambition. I wouldn't acknowledge you as my mate. I’m so sorry, Alora.”Faced with the apology I had once dreamed of, I felt utterly calm. “I admit it. I waited for you for five years l

My footsteps faltered for a second. “I brought her favorite white roses,” he begged like a man on the street. “Can you let me visit her grave? I want to apologize to her in person.”I didn’t turn back. “No. You don’t deserve to.”Two days later, I took the day off and drove to the mountain cemetery alone. A cold rain was falling. From a distance, I saw a fresh bouquet of edelweiss on my mother’s headstone. Her favorite. A tall figure stood beside it. Jaxon. He didn’t have an umbrella. Rain streamed through his dark hair, plastering it to his face. He held another bouquet of white roses. He didn’t see me. He carefully placed the flowers down, then dropped hard to his knees in the mud. “I’m sorry,” he choked out. His voice was a broken, hoarse whisper. “I really didn’t know.”His shoulders shook violently. The once-invincible Alpha buried his head in his hands. “I didn’t know you were gone for two years. I didn’t know what Alora was going through all alone.” He clawed at the muddy

“Are you satisfied now, Alora?!”A shrill, crying voice pierced through the phone, making my eardrum ache. I sipped my coffee, leaning against the control console. My voice was calm.“Clara, if you just called to scream at me, I’m hanging up in three seconds.”“Jaxon took your side!” she sobbed hysterically. “He didn’t say a single word to defend me! He gave the evidence to the Elders himself! I’ve been stripped of my rank! Exiled from the packs! This is all your fault!”I listened coldly. I didn't even bother to argue. The pack networks had been on fire for days. The Elders’ bulletin confirmed Clara was guilty. And Jaxon—the same Alpha who had pressured me for her, who had deleted posts to protect her—had personally handed over the evidence of his own cover-up. He took off his shirt in front of the Elders. He took fifty lashes from a silver-tipped whip. Silver poison burns werewolves to the bone, but he stood there bleeding without making a sound. For his actions, his Council voti

“We’re not even! Alora, we are not even!” Jaxon’s roar blasted through the speaker. The crazed desperation of a broken Alpha. My fingertips went white. But faced with his delayed breakdown, I felt absolutely nothing.“That’s your problem.”I hit ‘end call,’ cutting off his hopeless shouts. For the next few days, my phone wouldn't stop lighting up. At first, he tried to hang on to his Alpha pride. He sent messages with his usual commanding tone. “It’s cold in the North. Dress warmer.”“Don’t stay up all night looking at tactical maps.”I just looked at the screen, swiped to delete, and never replied. A few days later, his walls completely crumbled. “I went to your old apartment.”“I saw the picture of your mother. I’m sorry, Alora.”One night, a photo popped up. It was an old, yellowed wooden box. Scattered inside were all my childhood hunting badges. In the very center lay a rough-looking stone. The mating stone Jaxon had carved for me when we were teenagers. Two lines were scra

Day three in the North. I pushed open the doors to the Northern Packs' Joint Defense Center. No southern luxury here. Just cold, hard tactical boards and the static hiss of radios. Starting today, this frozen wasteland’s defense was mine.I’d just sat down at the tactical map when my phone lit up. It was an official summons from the Council of Elders. They were verifying the surveillance footage I’d sent. They were also launching a full investigation into Clara for paying off wolves to spread those rumors.I tossed my phone onto the desk. I braced myself for Jaxon’s call. For his rage. I could already picture it. His furious face. That arrogant Alpha tone, accusing me of being cruel. Blaming me for ruining Clara's reputation and his shot at the Council. But he didn't call. All day, his line was dead silent. Night fell. I was alone in the command center, reviewing the complex patrol maps. Suddenly, my phone exploded. The screen flashed. Message after message. All from Jaxon.“Answ
