Chapter 2

Autor: Trio Mountain
"I'm not finished. Don't do that again. I don't like it.

"You made that same face the last time I drove one of your coworkers home. Do you have any idea how mean it makes you look?"

I shot upright, my eyes stinging, and glared at him.

"Mean? I told you! Brianna and I have bad blood. She stole my client to get her promotion. Then she has the nerve to ask us for rides, and I'm supposed to smile and welcome her?"

Evan answered calmly, as if he'd seen right through me.

"See? There you go again. Another excuse. You're not just selfish now. You've always got an excuse for it, too."

That made me explode. I didn't care who was sitting in the back seat anymore.

"So asking your coworkers to get out makes me selfish?

"I'm sick tonight. My stomach hurts, and I feel terrible. Wanting to go home first is an excuse?

"Let me be very clear. There is no law that says I'm obligated to drive your coworkers home from work!"

The car went dead silent. Several seconds passed before Evan spoke.

"There's no law that says a husband has to pick his wife up from work either. And I still do it every day, don't I?"

I stared at him in disbelief.

"Evan, you're the one who offered to drive me to and from work every day. I never put a gun to your head!"

Evan sighed.

"I didn't say I don't want to drive you. I'm saying if I'm already picking you up, bringing along a couple of coworkers doesn't change anything.

"Denise's husband works out of town. She's raising a kid mostly on her own. If we can make her life a little easier, why wouldn't we—"

"Stop the car!"

I couldn't stand to hear another word.

I'd never told him not to give his coworkers rides. All the times he'd done it before, I hadn't said a thing.

Tonight was different. I was sick, and I wanted to get home early. And he'd turned that into a moral failing.

I couldn't take it anymore. As his wife, I didn't get a single bit of special treatment. I was dead last on his list.

"Let me out!"

Evan pulled over. I slammed the door and, under his stunned stare, turned and walked into the storm.

"Mara! Why do you have to be so dramatic?"

He leaned on the horn behind me, but I didn't look back.

I paid twice the normal fare for a private ride home.

After a hot shower, I locked the bedroom door, took some ibuprofen and cold medicine, and fell into a heavy sleep.

By the next morning, the dragging ache in my lower abdomen hadn't eased. It was worse, as if someone were carving at me from the inside with a knife.

I didn't even have the strength to stand. I called in sick and lay in bed, drifting in and out until the pain knocked me out.

When the pain woke me again, it was six in the evening.

Cold sweat kept breaking out all over me, and I was burning up. Every time I moved, a tearing pain shot through the lower right side of my abdomen.

This wasn't period cramps!

With shaking hands, I called Evan to ask whether he was off work and could take me to the hospital.

There were two seconds of silence. Then his irritated voice came through the phone.

"Can you stop? I'm still mad about yesterday, and now you're faking being sick to get sympathy?"

I screamed at him. "I'm actually sick! Come home and take me to the hospital right now!"

Evan paused.

"I can't today. I took Denise to pick up her daughter from preschool.

"There's a parent event at the preschool. It ends in half an hour, and then I have to take them home."

I was so angry I wanted to throw my phone.

"Evan! Which one of us is your wife, me or her?

"Why is she more important than me? I'm sick. I need to go to the hospital. Are you coming home or not?"

Evan was clearly furious too. His voice rose.

"You're getting more unreasonable by the day!

"How can your mind go somewhere so dirty? Denise is way older than me! Her husband's never around, and she's raising a kid on her own. What's wrong with me helping out? Can you stop being so unreasonable?"

I took a deep breath, pressing hard on my cramping stomach.

"Fine. Maybe I was wrong. Come home and take me to the hospital, and I'll believe there's nothing going on between you two."

That only made him angrier.

"Mara, what happened to you?

"You can't even keep your lies straight. You've never had bad period cramps in your life. You used that excuse yesterday, and I didn't even bother calling you out on it. I can't believe you're trying it again today."

My stomach hurt so much I thought I was dying, and he was still lecturing me.

All the hurt I'd been holding in crashed over me at once. I broke down and screamed into the phone.

"Evan, are you coming or not? If you don't come home, we're getting a divorce!"

The only answer was the call ending.

Right before he hung up, I heard a little girl ask, "Mr. Evan, are you fighting with somebody?"

"Some crazy person called the wrong number," Evan said.

I looked in the mirror. Pale face, cracked lips, hair a mess. I really did look like a crazy person.

I wiped away my tears and picked up my phone to call an ambulance. Then I thought about how much it would cost, and ordered a rideshare to the hospital instead.

As I was leaving the apartment, Evan sent me a message.

After that, Evan stopped bothering me.I thought we'd go our separate ways and each get on with our lives. I never imagined the last news I'd hear about him would come in such a horrific way. That day, the office gossip group chat suddenly blew up, and a shocking piece of news spread through the entire building.Evan Lawson was dead. He'd died in a car crash that was as absurd as it was horrific. As the gossip kept coming, the truth gradually came out. After I left him for good, Evan had been depressed for a while. But deep down, his compulsive need to please everyone and play the savior hadn't changed. Not only had he not learned his lesson, he'd doubled down, trying to prove his worth by "helping" people.Soon, he was back to playing the nice guy at work. This time, the person he drove to and from work every day was Chloe, an intern fresh out of college.Chloe's boyfriend, Tyler, was controlling and extremely petty. When Tyler saw Evan picking his girlfriend up and droppi

After the move, I made new friends and also picked up a new admirer: Reid Fletcher, a director at the company next door.Reid was cheerful and knew how to respect boundaries. He drove a Porsche, yet he was always finding excuses to bum a ride in my new car to and from work."Ms. Pierce, my car's in the shop again today. Mind giving me a lift?"He always came up with some lame excuse, smiling, before settling into my passenger seat like he owned it and handing me a bouquet of flowers and a cup of herbal tea at just the right temperature.I knew what he was after, and I didn't turn him away.Adult flirtation usually lives in what both people understand but never say out loud. Then one day, as Reid opened my passenger door as usual, a dark figure suddenly charged out from the side and punched him in the face.It was Evan."What are you doing?"I cried out and scrambled out of the car.Evan looked much more worn down than before, his eyes bloodshot. He pointed at Reid and roare

Not long after that, my company moved offices, and on my very first day in the new building, I heard the latest gossip about that day at the mall.As it turned out, our new office was right above Evan's company. In the elevator, I heard how things had played out for Evan and Denise. After the fight at the mall, Doug couldn't let it go. He took the whole thing straight to Evan's company and demanded that HR investigate whether the two of them were having an inappropriate relationship at work.Under pressure, the company actually did it. They went through the security footage, the chat logs, and even the expense reports. Two employees wearing badges from the company downstairs were in the elevator, discussing it heatedly."I heard they've been investigating for days. Did they find anything?""That's the hilarious part! They spent two weeks going through the footage and the chat logs, and there was nothing. Nothing inappropriate at all. They really were just coworkers!""Wait, ser

Apparently, the universe didn't think Evan had been punished enough. One weekend, I met a friend to go shopping at a mall downtown. We were just stepping off the escalator when I heard a shrill argument and a child crying nearby.I followed the sound and, to my surprise, saw Evan.Standing in front of him was Denise Harper, the coworker who was always hitching rides in his car, with a little girl of five or six beside her.And the man jabbing a finger in Evan's face, cursing him out, was big and burly, his face twisted with rage."Who the hell do you think you are? My wife and kid don't need you driving them around every day!"He roared and grabbed Evan by the collar.Evan's face turned red as he tried to explain."Look, man, you've got it all wrong! Denise and I are just coworkers. I know it's hard for her raising a kid while you're away so much. I was only trying to help...""Help? Screw your help!"He punched Evan in the face. Evan staggered and fell to the floor, blood t

"Let's go straight to the county courthouse and file for divorce."Oh, and how much was gas? I'll pay you back my share. There were three of us in the car, though, so I'm only covering a third."Evan froze."Why? Your grandpa's fine, isn't he? Why do you still want a divorce?"His words made all the fear I'd been holding back hit me at once. I glared at him, my eyes stinging."My grandpa's fine because he got lucky!"If something had happened to him today, I might have missed my last chance to see him, all because I was riding in your car!"I'm your wife. Why do you always put me behind everyone else?"I'm sick and tired of living like this!"Evan just stared at me blankly. "Why are you divorcing me?"Changing how someone sees the world is next to impossible, and Evan wasn't worth the effort of arguing. So I slapped him hard across the face."Enough talking. Drive to the courthouse!"In a daze, Evan followed me to the courthouse. When we came out after filing the paperwork

After I was discharged, I went home, packed my things, and moved out.Once I'd blocked Evan's number, he couldn't reach me, so he went to my parents instead. My mom tried to talk me out of it."We watched Evan grow up. He's a good-hearted boy. There isn't a soul in our neighborhood who doesn't like him."She was right. Everyone said Evan was a good guy. That was why I'd agreed when my parents set us up, and why I'd ended up marrying him.It was only after the wedding that I realized being married to a saint was the dumbest thing a woman could do.I'd made up my mind, and eventually my mom stopped pushing. What I didn't expect was for her to have Evan pick me up the next morning for the drive back to my hometown over Memorial Day weekend. When I got into the car, I saw there was someone else inside. It was a woman I'd never seen before.Seeing me look at her, Evan explained nervously."Mara, this is Erica. She's new at the company, and she's from your hometown too. She heard
