Chapter 1

"Uh, Mara? I'm just going to close the door, okay? The rain's blowing in, and it's freezing."

The woman speaking was Denise Harper, one of Evan's older coworkers. I knew her. Ever since Evan bought his car, she'd treated him like her private chauffeur.

I caught the door before she could shut it.

"Denise, please get a rideshare home tonight. My umbrella broke, and I don't feel well. I really need to get home."

She didn't move. Instead, she turned to Evan with an awkward look.

"Evan, um... you told me you'd take me home every time. You can't suddenly kick me out in weather like this. It's pouring."

Evan frowned. He got out of the car and held a new umbrella out to me.

"You know how bad traffic is around here on a normal day, and getting a ride in the rain is even harder. Be reasonable. Go back to your office for a little while, and I'll come get you after I drop them off."

I forced myself to stay calm.

"Evan, I've had bad period cramps all day, and now I'm soaked. I feel awful. I need you to take me home now."

His expression darkened. He tried to push the umbrella into my hand.

"Can't you hold out a little longer? Everyone in the car works with me. Making them get out now would look really bad."

I slapped his hand away.

"Then maybe you shouldn't have played the nice guy and offered half your office a ride. If you love driving people around so much, why don't you just go drive for Uber?"

I leaned toward the back seat.

"I'm sorry, but I really don't feel well tonight. Whoever lives farther away, please get home on your own. Evan can give you a ride another day."

Denise immediately called to the young woman in the front passenger seat.

"Kayla, why don't you and your friend head out on your own? The train station's just up the street, and if you're going downtown, the Red Line will take you straight there."

Kayla Brooks rolled her eyes, grabbed her friend's arm, and climbed out.

"Unbelievable. He's the one who pulled over and insisted on giving us a ride, and now that we're in, suddenly there's a problem?

"It's a beat-up car. What's he so full of himself about? Letting this person ride, kicking that person out. Who does he think he is? Come on, Holly. We'll take the train."

The front passenger seat was finally empty. I got in, one hand pressed to my stomach.

The spare towel Evan kept in the car was already soaked from Kayla using it, so I sat curled up in my seat, shivering in my wet clothes with my hair dripping.

Evan got back behind the wheel, his face grim.

Another woman in the back seat, one who looked vaguely familiar, spoke up timidly.

"Evan, my place is pretty far too. Why don't you just drop me off at the station up ahead? I can take the train home."

Evan stepped on the gas. "No. I said I'd take you home, so I will."

My hand tightened over my stomach, but I swallowed my irritation.

Fine. At least I had a seat and was out of the rain. If I got home late, so be it.

Evan glanced at me, clearly annoyed.

"Mara, I'm really disappointed in how you acted tonight. It's pouring. I gave a few coworkers a ride home on my way. What's wrong with that?

"Was it worth throwing a fit and kicking people out of the car?"

I bit the inside of my cheek. His coworkers were still sitting behind us, and I didn't want to fight with him in front of them.

But Evan didn't hold back at all. If anything, he was just getting started.

"When I first met you, you weren't like this. You were so kind back then, always ready to help people. When did you get so selfish?

"Remember that time an old man collapsed on the sidewalk? Everyone else was too scared to go near him, but you were the first one to run over and—"

"Shut up!"

I cut him off mid-rant.

"Turn right at the next intersection. Take me home first, and then you can drive those two wherever they need to go."

Evan ignored me and drove straight through the intersection.

I turned to glare at him, but his eyes stayed on the road.

"I'm taking Denise home first. Her kid's at home waiting for her."

After that, Evan stopped bothering me.I thought we'd go our separate ways and each get on with our lives. I never imagined the last news I'd hear about him would come in such a horrific way. That day, the office gossip group chat suddenly blew up, and a shocking piece of news spread through the entire building.Evan Lawson was dead. He'd died in a car crash that was as absurd as it was horrific. As the gossip kept coming, the truth gradually came out. After I left him for good, Evan had been depressed for a while. But deep down, his compulsive need to please everyone and play the savior hadn't changed. Not only had he not learned his lesson, he'd doubled down, trying to prove his worth by "helping" people.Soon, he was back to playing the nice guy at work. This time, the person he drove to and from work every day was Chloe, an intern fresh out of college.Chloe's boyfriend, Tyler, was controlling and extremely petty. When Tyler saw Evan picking his girlfriend up and droppi

After the move, I made new friends and also picked up a new admirer: Reid Fletcher, a director at the company next door.Reid was cheerful and knew how to respect boundaries. He drove a Porsche, yet he was always finding excuses to bum a ride in my new car to and from work."Ms. Pierce, my car's in the shop again today. Mind giving me a lift?"He always came up with some lame excuse, smiling, before settling into my passenger seat like he owned it and handing me a bouquet of flowers and a cup of herbal tea at just the right temperature.I knew what he was after, and I didn't turn him away.Adult flirtation usually lives in what both people understand but never say out loud. Then one day, as Reid opened my passenger door as usual, a dark figure suddenly charged out from the side and punched him in the face.It was Evan."What are you doing?"I cried out and scrambled out of the car.Evan looked much more worn down than before, his eyes bloodshot. He pointed at Reid and roare

Not long after that, my company moved offices, and on my very first day in the new building, I heard the latest gossip about that day at the mall.As it turned out, our new office was right above Evan's company. In the elevator, I heard how things had played out for Evan and Denise. After the fight at the mall, Doug couldn't let it go. He took the whole thing straight to Evan's company and demanded that HR investigate whether the two of them were having an inappropriate relationship at work.Under pressure, the company actually did it. They went through the security footage, the chat logs, and even the expense reports. Two employees wearing badges from the company downstairs were in the elevator, discussing it heatedly."I heard they've been investigating for days. Did they find anything?""That's the hilarious part! They spent two weeks going through the footage and the chat logs, and there was nothing. Nothing inappropriate at all. They really were just coworkers!""Wait, ser

Apparently, the universe didn't think Evan had been punished enough. One weekend, I met a friend to go shopping at a mall downtown. We were just stepping off the escalator when I heard a shrill argument and a child crying nearby.I followed the sound and, to my surprise, saw Evan.Standing in front of him was Denise Harper, the coworker who was always hitching rides in his car, with a little girl of five or six beside her.And the man jabbing a finger in Evan's face, cursing him out, was big and burly, his face twisted with rage."Who the hell do you think you are? My wife and kid don't need you driving them around every day!"He roared and grabbed Evan by the collar.Evan's face turned red as he tried to explain."Look, man, you've got it all wrong! Denise and I are just coworkers. I know it's hard for her raising a kid while you're away so much. I was only trying to help...""Help? Screw your help!"He punched Evan in the face. Evan staggered and fell to the floor, blood t

"Let's go straight to the county courthouse and file for divorce."Oh, and how much was gas? I'll pay you back my share. There were three of us in the car, though, so I'm only covering a third."Evan froze."Why? Your grandpa's fine, isn't he? Why do you still want a divorce?"His words made all the fear I'd been holding back hit me at once. I glared at him, my eyes stinging."My grandpa's fine because he got lucky!"If something had happened to him today, I might have missed my last chance to see him, all because I was riding in your car!"I'm your wife. Why do you always put me behind everyone else?"I'm sick and tired of living like this!"Evan just stared at me blankly. "Why are you divorcing me?"Changing how someone sees the world is next to impossible, and Evan wasn't worth the effort of arguing. So I slapped him hard across the face."Enough talking. Drive to the courthouse!"In a daze, Evan followed me to the courthouse. When we came out after filing the paperwork

After I was discharged, I went home, packed my things, and moved out.Once I'd blocked Evan's number, he couldn't reach me, so he went to my parents instead. My mom tried to talk me out of it."We watched Evan grow up. He's a good-hearted boy. There isn't a soul in our neighborhood who doesn't like him."She was right. Everyone said Evan was a good guy. That was why I'd agreed when my parents set us up, and why I'd ended up marrying him.It was only after the wedding that I realized being married to a saint was the dumbest thing a woman could do.I'd made up my mind, and eventually my mom stopped pushing. What I didn't expect was for her to have Evan pick me up the next morning for the drive back to my hometown over Memorial Day weekend. When I got into the car, I saw there was someone else inside. It was a woman I'd never seen before.Seeing me look at her, Evan explained nervously."Mara, this is Erica. She's new at the company, and she's from your hometown too. She heard
