Chapter 2

Author: Heroic Thief
Smiling, I pointed at the employee handbook. "I'm just pointing out a contradiction in your logic. How does that count as insubordination?"

"You…" Finley's finger trembled with rage as he pointed it at me.

Sensing disaster, the assistant manager, Edward Perry, rushed to play peacemaker. "Mr. White only has our best interests at heart. The company does need everyone to pitch in and care for it.

"Mr. White, Asher is still young. If there's something he doesn't understand, we can guide him. Let's all just take a seat first."

As Edward said that, he gently guided Finley back into his chair, then turned to me with a smile. "And Asher, there's no need to get so worked up. Young people tend to be too impulsive. That's not necessarily a good thing.

"By the way, aren't we here to review the proposal for Apex Group? Asher, I believe you're in charge of it. Why don't you walk us through it?"

With Edward taking the lead in defusing the tension, my team lead quickly jumped in to help me out. "Right, yeah! Asher's been pulling a lot of late nights on this proposal. Asher, go ahead and give everyone the breakdown."

Seeing Finley still glaring daggers at me, I rolled my eyes, grabbed my proposal, and walked up to the front of the room.

"Apex Group's goal for this campaign is pretty straightforward. They want to showcase their brand identity and core product highlights within a tight window…"

Since I had completed the proposal on my own, I explained the details with confidence and ease.

By the time I wrapped up, Finley's expression was still sour, but Edward was already smiling and clapping. "Excellent! This is a phenomenal proposal. The signing with Apex Group this afternoon is sure to be a success!"

I never started trouble unless provoked. Since Edward was keeping things civil, I offered him a polite smile in return.

"Appreciate the vote of confidence, Mr. Perry."

"Alright, everyone. Let's give it one last push today. Once we secure this deal, dinner is on me tonight!" Edward announced, earning an appreciative round of cheers from the rest of the room.

"Yes!"

"Thanks, Mr. Perry!"

The moment the meeting adjourned, I left the room, sat back down at my desk, and started fine-tuning a few minor details in the proposal.

When Joel got back to his desk, he nudged me and dropped his voice to a whisper. "Dude, you're an absolute legend. You should've seen Finley's face. It was as dark as a thundercloud. He's literally staring you down right now!"

I raised an eyebrow and glanced toward the manager's office. Sure enough, the door was shut and the blinds were drawn, but someone was peering through a tiny gap in the plastic slats, glaring directly at my desk.

Shit! That scared the crap out of me!

I rolled my eyes in sheer annoyance. Was he trying to give me a heart attack?

"Let him watch all he wants. We're doing our jobs. Who cares?"

Joel shot me a suspicious look. "Be honest with me, Asher. Do you have family on the board or something?"

I chuckled and started stacking my papers neatly. "Oh, totally. My dad owns the whole company."

Noticing how casually I said it, Joel figured I was just joking. He cracked a few more jokes and went back to work.

Mom and Dad took the situation incredibly seriously and made it clear they'd be heading down to the office the very next day to see for themselves.I was actually a little curious. Finley had been targeting me for so long. Just what kind of expression would he have when he found out the entire company belonged to my family?I'd never been interested in corporate management. My plan had always been to start from the bottom.Being a regular employee was much more relaxing than pulling grueling hours as a CEO like Eliza. Besides, the company shares were split right down the middle, so it wasn't like I was losing out.Because I kept a strictly low profile and dressed like any average guy, nobody in the office had a clue that the massive Saunders Group belonged to my family. When I'd mentioned being related to Eliza the other day, my coworkers just assumed I was talking nonsense. I didn't bother correcting them. I was pretty happy at the company anyway, aside from that toxic individual

Finley nodded with a cold sneer. "If you can't even handle a simple task like this, why do you deserve your paycheck? What, you think the company just gives out free handouts?"I smiled, pulled a few files out of the stack, and tossed them onto the desk. "I think these documents require a manager's review and signature. Since you're dumping your workload onto me, are you giving me your salary too? Or do you just find your seat uncomfortable and want to trade places with me?"I didn't bother lowering my voice, and everyone in the surrounding cubicles turned to look at us."You…" Finley was visibly embarrassed. He pointed a finger at me and started yelling, "So you're starting to make excuses when I assign you a little bit of work? Do you even want this job? Do you even want to work at this company anymore?"His words made me laugh. "Like I said before, if you have a problem with me, give me a month's notice in writing. And since it would be a termination without cause, you'll need t

The moment I said that, the whole group burst out laughing.I couldn't help but roll my eyes. Why was no one believing me when I was actually telling the truth? But either way, after that incident, no one dared to mess with me anymore. Aside from Finley, everyone else in the office treated me with a decent amount of respect.Finley kept looking for any opportunity to drag me down again, but he just couldn't find anything to use against me.Instead, rumors started circulating around the office that Ms. Saunders and I had some kind of secret relationship. Some people even claimed they saw the two of us getting into the same car in the underground parking garage.Lately, the way they looked at me had shifted. They were treating me like some useless guy living off a sugar mommy.I didn't even bother explaining myself. Rumors lost their power among the wise. However, if someone lacked the brains to think, no amount of explanation would ever suffice. The days rolled by, and I took on

Everyone liked that proposal at the time, but Finley kept making me revise it over and over again. I wouldn't have minded doing revisions if he had actually offered any constructive feedback. But every single note he gave was absolute nonsense. It was always either the font was wrong, or the color palette was off. Eventually, I snapped, refused to change a single thing, and submitted the exact same file. The idiot didn't even realize it was identical to my first draft. He actually sat there looking incredibly smug, claiming that the only reason we locked down the Apex Group account was because of his brilliant revisions. It was honestly hilarious.I hadn't cared enough to call him out before, but that didn't mean I was blind. Arguing with an idiot like him would just be a waste of my time."That's a lie!"Finley's face turned bright red. He was completely caught off guard by my bluntness.Ms. Saunders nodded slightly, gave Finley a look, and said, "Regardless, he's made a majo

Before I could respond, Ms. Saunders let out a soft laugh. "If he's really that incompetent, then who approved his hiring in the first place?"That single question made Finley's expression freeze. He forced a dry chuckle, completely at a loss for words.I smiled and chimed in. "Mr. White, if I remember correctly, you were the one who interviewed me. What was it you said back then? Oh, right. You said the company desperately needed fresh blood like me, and that I was exactly the kind of top-tier talent you were looking for. Isn't that right?"I was smiling, but the mockery in my words was impossible to miss.Finley gritted his teeth at me, but with Ms. Saunders standing right there, he managed to squeeze out a strained smile. "If I'd known what kind of person you really were back then, I never would have let you through the door. Hiring you is my biggest regret."I had to suppress a laugh. He was regretting it now? He certainly didn't seem to regret it when I completed that proposa

"Who's throwing their weight around?"Right in the middle of my standoff with Finley, a highly familiar voice rang out from behind me.I turned to find a very familiar face, and I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. The woman looked surprised to see me too, but Finley was already practically sprinting over to her with a sycophantic grin."Ms. Saunders! What brings you here for an inspection today?"The woman addressed as Ms. Saunders gave a brief nod. "Just doing a walkthrough. I happened to catch something about someone throwing their weight around. What's going on? Is there an issue here?"Finley was nothing like the arrogant figure he had been earlier. Instead, he forced a flattering smile."Oh, it's nothing major. Just dealing with a problematic employee who refuses to follow the rules."I found his words hilarious. I simply stood there with my hands in my pockets, staring at him. "Yeah. I just didn't realize a manager had the authority to fire someone on a whim. Especially
