Chapter 1

Author: Heroic Thief
I reached the office at 8:59:59 am.

"Beep! Clock-in successful!"

I swallowed the last bite of my bagel, tossed my empty soy milk carton into the trash, and slid into my chair.

Everything was perfect. Impeccable timing.

I was a fresh college graduate working at one of the leading companies in the industry. It had taken two rounds of interviews just to get my foot in the door.

My campaign pitches were solid. Three months in, I'd already racked up compliments from four different clients, and one of them even demanded that I be their sole point of contact moving forward.

That instantly made me the most outstanding newcomer in my batch.

Last month, thanks to my bonuses and commissions, I actually earned more than my manager, Finley White.

Naturally, that put a massive target on my back. Finley started gunning for me, constantly dumping grunt work on my desk that nobody else wanted.

He took plenty of other petty shots at me too, but I didn't care. As long as I did my job, everything else was none of my business.

I was in the middle of editing a proposal when a notification popped up in the company group chat, announcing that there would be a meeting in the conference room in ten minutes.

My coworker, Joel Howard, glanced at me before looking toward the office. He pursed his lips and said, "Watch your back. He's probably going after you again."

I nodded with a knowing smile. To be envied was a privilege reserved for the talented. Nobody would bother to envy the mediocre.

I stayed behind for a minute to gather my notes, so I arrived a little late. By the time I walked in, almost everyone was seated.

Finley sat at the head of the table with an irritated expression.

"Ahem."

He cleared his throat, waiting until everyone's attention was locked onto him before speaking.

"This is just our standard Monday meeting, but there are a few things I need to address. Some people are getting too complacent. I'm seeing a severe issue with people clocking in late and leaving early. I expect every team lead to go back and have a serious talk with their members.

"Don't think that just because you have a little talent, the rules don't apply to you. This is a company, not your house!"

Nobody said a word, but nearly everyone glanced in my direction.

I flashed a grin. "Mr. White, why are we talking in riddles? Who exactly are you calling out?"

The entire conference room went dead quiet. Out of Finley's line of sight, Joel gave me a thumbs-up.

Finley frowned. "Asher, what is that supposed to mean?"

Smiling, I dropped my printed proposal on the table. "You know exactly what I mean. If you want to call me out, just say my name. Why talk in riddles?"

Finley clearly didn't expect me to say that. His expression darkened. "Asher, this is an official meeting! Drop the divisive attitude right now! Like I said, this is a company. Stop acting like you own the place!"

That actually made me laugh. I pulled out the company handbook right away, and the first rule stated, "The company is our home. Protecting it is everyone's duty."

"That's funny. When you want us to put in unpaid overtime or clean up the breakroom, the office is our home. But now suddenly it's not? Mr. White, it's better not to have such double standards."

Now it wasn't just Joel. Half the room was staring at me like I was some kind of hero.

Finley's face flushed a deep shade of purple. He slammed both hands on the table and stood up. "Asher Saunders! What is wrong with you? This is insubordination! You're slandering this company!"

Mom and Dad took the situation incredibly seriously and made it clear they'd be heading down to the office the very next day to see for themselves.I was actually a little curious. Finley had been targeting me for so long. Just what kind of expression would he have when he found out the entire company belonged to my family?I'd never been interested in corporate management. My plan had always been to start from the bottom.Being a regular employee was much more relaxing than pulling grueling hours as a CEO like Eliza. Besides, the company shares were split right down the middle, so it wasn't like I was losing out.Because I kept a strictly low profile and dressed like any average guy, nobody in the office had a clue that the massive Saunders Group belonged to my family. When I'd mentioned being related to Eliza the other day, my coworkers just assumed I was talking nonsense. I didn't bother correcting them. I was pretty happy at the company anyway, aside from that toxic individual

Finley nodded with a cold sneer. "If you can't even handle a simple task like this, why do you deserve your paycheck? What, you think the company just gives out free handouts?"I smiled, pulled a few files out of the stack, and tossed them onto the desk. "I think these documents require a manager's review and signature. Since you're dumping your workload onto me, are you giving me your salary too? Or do you just find your seat uncomfortable and want to trade places with me?"I didn't bother lowering my voice, and everyone in the surrounding cubicles turned to look at us."You…" Finley was visibly embarrassed. He pointed a finger at me and started yelling, "So you're starting to make excuses when I assign you a little bit of work? Do you even want this job? Do you even want to work at this company anymore?"His words made me laugh. "Like I said before, if you have a problem with me, give me a month's notice in writing. And since it would be a termination without cause, you'll need t

The moment I said that, the whole group burst out laughing.I couldn't help but roll my eyes. Why was no one believing me when I was actually telling the truth? But either way, after that incident, no one dared to mess with me anymore. Aside from Finley, everyone else in the office treated me with a decent amount of respect.Finley kept looking for any opportunity to drag me down again, but he just couldn't find anything to use against me.Instead, rumors started circulating around the office that Ms. Saunders and I had some kind of secret relationship. Some people even claimed they saw the two of us getting into the same car in the underground parking garage.Lately, the way they looked at me had shifted. They were treating me like some useless guy living off a sugar mommy.I didn't even bother explaining myself. Rumors lost their power among the wise. However, if someone lacked the brains to think, no amount of explanation would ever suffice. The days rolled by, and I took on

Everyone liked that proposal at the time, but Finley kept making me revise it over and over again. I wouldn't have minded doing revisions if he had actually offered any constructive feedback. But every single note he gave was absolute nonsense. It was always either the font was wrong, or the color palette was off. Eventually, I snapped, refused to change a single thing, and submitted the exact same file. The idiot didn't even realize it was identical to my first draft. He actually sat there looking incredibly smug, claiming that the only reason we locked down the Apex Group account was because of his brilliant revisions. It was honestly hilarious.I hadn't cared enough to call him out before, but that didn't mean I was blind. Arguing with an idiot like him would just be a waste of my time."That's a lie!"Finley's face turned bright red. He was completely caught off guard by my bluntness.Ms. Saunders nodded slightly, gave Finley a look, and said, "Regardless, he's made a majo

Before I could respond, Ms. Saunders let out a soft laugh. "If he's really that incompetent, then who approved his hiring in the first place?"That single question made Finley's expression freeze. He forced a dry chuckle, completely at a loss for words.I smiled and chimed in. "Mr. White, if I remember correctly, you were the one who interviewed me. What was it you said back then? Oh, right. You said the company desperately needed fresh blood like me, and that I was exactly the kind of top-tier talent you were looking for. Isn't that right?"I was smiling, but the mockery in my words was impossible to miss.Finley gritted his teeth at me, but with Ms. Saunders standing right there, he managed to squeeze out a strained smile. "If I'd known what kind of person you really were back then, I never would have let you through the door. Hiring you is my biggest regret."I had to suppress a laugh. He was regretting it now? He certainly didn't seem to regret it when I completed that proposa

"Who's throwing their weight around?"Right in the middle of my standoff with Finley, a highly familiar voice rang out from behind me.I turned to find a very familiar face, and I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. The woman looked surprised to see me too, but Finley was already practically sprinting over to her with a sycophantic grin."Ms. Saunders! What brings you here for an inspection today?"The woman addressed as Ms. Saunders gave a brief nod. "Just doing a walkthrough. I happened to catch something about someone throwing their weight around. What's going on? Is there an issue here?"Finley was nothing like the arrogant figure he had been earlier. Instead, he forced a flattering smile."Oh, it's nothing major. Just dealing with a problematic employee who refuses to follow the rules."I found his words hilarious. I simply stood there with my hands in my pockets, staring at him. "Yeah. I just didn't realize a manager had the authority to fire someone on a whim. Especially
