Chapter 5

Author: The Sunchaser
Thirteen hours later, the plane landed.

The second I stepped outside, a freezing gust smacked me in the face. I hugged myself tight.

Then—bam—a warm coat landed on my shoulders.

"Bella."

I looked up.

Ronan Reid.

Calm, steady, exactly how I remembered.

"Leo got pulled into a meeting. He sent me instead," he said. "Welcome home."

That last word cracked something in me. My eyes burned, and the tears just came.

Ronan didn't ask. Just wiped them away, his fingers warm, steady—not like Jack's grabby, calloused hands.

"Don't cry," he murmured. "I've got you."

I nodded, lip trembling, but the floodgates were already open.

Ronan let out a quiet sigh and pulled me in, his hand patting my back just like when we were kids and I'd wipe out on my bike.

"It's okay. It's over."

His voice was barely above a whisper, but it steadied me.

I clung to his coat and finally let go, sobbing into his chest.

He brought me home.

Jack crumpled to the floor, lips trembling, totally speechless. His secretary hovered, panicking. "Mr. Prescott! The board's waiting! If you stall any longer, it's over for real!"Jack suddenly looked up, eyes wild. "Bella! You're really gonna wipe me out?!"I stared him down. "Wipe you out? Jack, you lied for three years, treated me like a joke—and now you want mercy?"Ronan pulled me closer, voice steady. "Business is war, Mr. Prescott. You lost."Jack lunged, reaching for my wrist.Ronan kicked him back.He hit the ground hard, suit dusty, not even a shadow of who he used to be."Bella, please..." His voice broke. "Give me a way out..."I looked down at him and honestly couldn't help laughing. The guy I once gave everything to, now on his knees like a washed-up loser."A way out?" I chuckled. "Sure."His eyes lit up, like he thought I was about to save him.I pulled out a document and dropped it in front of him. "Sign it. Whatever's left of Prescott Corp goes to Beaumon

I spotted Jack outside the Prescott Corp conference room. His face lit up like I was some miracle. He rushed over, grabbed my hand."Bella, you came back for me, didn't you? I knew you weren't that cold."Ronan stepped in, cool and steady. "Back off.""Move!" Jack shoved him.Ronan caught his wrist and twisted, easy.Jack winced but kept staring at me, all desperate. "It's just you now. I don't care about money or status. I just want you."I smirked. "Really, Jack? You think you still deserve me? You're exactly where I was—just sincerity and nothing else. What else you got?""I promise—""Jack." I cut him off and pulled a folder from my briefcase. "I'm here representing Beaumont Group. This is the takeover."His face went blank. "W-What?""My brother said," I said, smoothing the file, "a small acquisition like this is perfect practice."Jack backed up, face draining. "No way... Beaumont Group... you're—"Ronan slid an arm around my waist. "Let me introduce her properly. Th

A year later, Ronan and I flew back for a corporate takeover.Evening breeze hit as we landed—Bexmoor still smelled like street smoke.Ronan walked close, casually blocking the crowd from bumping into me."Hungry?" he asked, voice low. "Wanna hit Vorough Street?"I froze.Vorough Street—where I busted my back and saved every dime for Jack.Ronan caught the pause, gently lacing his fingers with mine. "We don't have to."I gave his hand a quick squeeze. "No... let's go."Vorough Street at night was buzzing—same chaos, same noise.Ronan led me through the crowd, stopping at a little jewelry stand."This suits you." He held up a silver hairpin with tiny pearls, catching the light just right.I laughed. "When did you get good at picking out girl stuff?"He looked down, smirking. "Always was. Just never got to show you."My chest tightened, warm and full. I leaned in as Ronan slid the pin into my hair, his fingers brushing through like he was afraid to break me."Bella...?"Th

On a stormy night in Bexmoor, Jack stumbled into his busted-up rental. The place still smelled like old grease—Bella's ghost. He dropped onto the bed, fingers grazing the worn sheets. She used to be here."Bella..." His voice was wrecked, barely a whisper. An empty bottle clinked to the floor. He tipped back the last swallow of cheap liquor. It burned going down, but his chest still throbbed. For three months, Jack scoured every corner of Bexmoor. He hit up their old skewer joint—new name, new owner.Camped outside the bank, hoping to spot the girl who once saved every cent for him.Even crawled back to that nasty canal, knee-deep in muck, clawing for the silver ring he'd tossed like an idiot."I screwed up," he muttered, face in his hands, shoulders trembling. "God, I really screwed up..."Memories hit like a wave.Bella hustling behind the grill. Burn marks on her arms. That look in her eyes when she counted coins like they meant something. And that moment—her soaked in

"Bella."My brother Leo walked in, all business, and pulled me up for a quick once-over. "You've lost weight."My nose stung. I didn't even get a word out before he frowned. "Why are your eyes red? Who made you cry?"I shook my head, forcing a weak smile. "I'm fine. Just tired."Leo snorted. "Yeah, well, I heard all about that loser Jack Prescott."I stiffened, glancing at Ronan without meaning to.Ronan cleared his throat and looked away.Leo shot Ronan a look, then burst out laughing. "Cut the act, man. You've been sneaking off to Bexmoor every month to check on her. Who else knows all the tea?"My head snapped up. "Wait—what?"Ronan's ears flushed red. "Just business trips," he said coolly, turning away."Business trips?" Leo raised a brow. "Every month for three years, and you just HAPPENED to land in front of Bella's skewer joint?"I went still.So... it wasn't random. The stranger with the umbrella on rainy days. The quiet guy always lingering when I locked up.The
