Chapter 4

Author: Cece West
Leah turned.

Bianca held Matteo’s arm. Nico stood between them, with two guards behind.

The attendant’s smile faltered.

Matteo stared at Finn.

“Aren’t you going to say hello?”

Finn hid behind Leah.

She took their two tickets.

“He doesn’t want to.”

Bianca touched Matteo’s arm.

“Leave it. He’s still upset.”

She bought Nico a ticket, looking every inch the reasonable one.

The two-seat cars moved slowly along an enclosed track.

Beside Leah, Finn finally relaxed enough to smile.

At the turn ahead, Nico’s car stopped.

He looked back at them, his smile changing.

“Mom says you’re the reason Uncle Matteo can’t be my dad.”

Leah’s foot moved toward the brake.

“If you died, he could be my dad!”

Nico shouted across the track.

“Go die!”

He steered his car across the narrow exit.

Leah braked, but the car behind them couldn’t stop in time.

The impact threw her forward.

She reached for Finn.

His forehead still struck the side of the car. Blood ran over his eyebrow.

He screamed.

Staff shut down the ride.

Matteo and Bianca arrived as Nico threw himself into her arms.

“She crashed into me on purpose!”

“No!” Finn sobbed. “He blocked us!”

Matteo looked at the cars.

“You’re saying a little boy planned to hurt you?”

Leah pressed a clean handkerchief against Finn’s forehead.

“Check the cameras. Ask the staff.”

Bianca’s face tightened.

“He’s still recovering. He can’t handle this fright. We should get him to the hospital.”

“Finn needs treatment, too.”

Leah lifted him and headed for the exit.

A guard stepped into her path.

She looked at Matteo.

“Move them.”

“First, explain what happened.”

“Your son is bleeding. Can’t you see him?”

Matteo glanced at Finn’s pale face.

Before he could speak, Bianca started crying.

“She was glaring at Nico. She terrified him. At least make her apologize.”

Matteo didn’t stop her.

The guards stayed where they were.

“Apologize,” he said. “Then my driver will take you.”

Finn’s voice weakened against Leah’s shoulder.

“Mom, I feel dizzy.”

Every argument died in her throat.

“I’m sorry.”

Bianca said nothing. She held Nico close, her wounded expression firmly in place.

Matteo looked at her, then snapped at Leah.

“You call that an apology?”

Leah looked at the blocked exit.

Then at the child going pale in her arms.

She dropped hard to her knees.

“I’m sorry. It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have argued. Please let me take Finn to the hospital. Please.”

Matteo’s expression changed.

He reached to help her.

She avoided his hand, pushed herself upright, and ran through the gap the guards finally left.

At the hospital, a doctor cleaned Finn’s wound and administered a local anesthetic.

Finn still shook with fear.

He wouldn’t let go of Leah’s hand.

She bent over the bed.

“I’m here. No one’s taking you away this time.”

Once he slept, she went to collect his medication.

Passing a private lounge, she heard Bianca.

“Nico was just frightened. Go check on Finn.”

A pause.

“Leah got on her knees today. I’m worried she’ll take him and leave.”

Leah stopped outside the door.

Matteo sounded certain.

“She won’t.”

“How do you know?”

“She found out I’d been lying for five years, and she stayed in that basement.”

A cup touched its saucer.

“If she can accept that, why would she leave?”

His voice softened.

“Finn’s the same. A little attention, and he’ll be fine.”

Leah tightened her grip on the medication bag.

She didn’t open the door.

She didn’t make a sound.

Back in the room, Finn was still asleep.

She sat beside him and slipped her hand under the blanket to hold his.

She’d thought Matteo couldn’t see what they sacrificed for him.

Now she understood.

He saw everything.

That was why he believed they’d stay, whatever he did.

Her phone vibrated.

The attorney said the court proceedings were nearly complete. In the submitted paperwork, Matteo had signed his agreement to the divorce and to Finn remaining in Leah’s care.

She replied:

*Okay.*

She already had a job in another city. A landlord there had confirmed their move-in date.

Once Finn could leave the hospital, they were going.

Discharge day arrived under a gray sky.

They’d barely reached the corner when a dark van stopped beside them.

The door slid open.

A hand caught Leah’s arm.

She didn’t get a full scream out before they dragged her and Finn inside.

When she regained consciousness, she was lying in a warehouse at an abandoned shipyard.

Finn lay beside her with his wrists bound, trying to cry quietly.

A man crouched in front of her, holding her phone.

“The Vitale boss’s wife and son. Not a single guard.”

He showed her Matteo’s number.

“Call him.”

Slowly, Leah took Adrian’s hand and laced her fingers through his.“If Finn asks about him one day and wants to know, you can tell him the truth,” she said softly. She looked up into her husband’s eyes.“Just don’t let him feel that any of it was his responsibility.”Finn was ten now—tall for his age, warmhearted, and quick to laugh. He had school friends, weekend soccer games with Adrian, and grandparents who still tried to pile too much food onto his plate every Sunday. His childhood had finally been given back to him.She wouldn’t let a shadow from the past weigh on his shoulders again.Adrian nodded solemnly.“I know. I’ll handle it carefully when the time comes.”Leah leaned close and kissed his lips lightly.“Some people can only stay in the past.”Adrian’s expression softened, and he held her securely in his arms.“Ready to go home?” he asked.“Ready. Dad called earlier to say he bought fresh salmon again, and Finn told him to save the biggest piece for me.”Adrian laughed and o

Three years later, outside a hospital clinic in St. Louis, Leah stood under the shade of the walkway looking at the test results in her hand. Her fingers trembled slightly against the edge of the paper.“What did the doctor say?”Having just parked the car, Adrian rushed over from the lot, his jacket open and his breath slightly quick as he took the slip from her hand.“Sorry, sweetheart, there were too many cars today. Parking took forever, and I was worried you’d be waiting alone—”His voice cut off mid-sentence.When he saw the words printed on the page, he stopped short, stared for two full seconds, and then broke into wild joy. With tears shining in her eyes, Leah nodded at him.“I’m pregnant.”Adrian carefully folded the report into his pocket first so he wouldn’t crumple it, then pulled her excitedly into his arms, laughing like a child.“That’s wonderful! Finn is going to have a little brother or sister!”“He’ll be thrilled,” Leah said, laughing against his shoulder. “He’s been

Hundreds of miles away at the Vitale estate, the curtains in the study were half drawn.Matteo sat alone behind his wide desk, watching the wedding clip on his phone. It was a short video a guest had posted on a social media account earlier that afternoon. In the frame, sunlight fell over the lawn. Leah was smiling with her head tilted slightly toward Adrian, and Finn stood between them in his small white suit, holding both their hands. No one in that picture was afraid. No one was looking at the doors for guards, and no one was being forced to stay.Matteo watched the clip through to the end three times before he slowly shut off the screen. In the black glass of the phone, he saw only his own hollow face.He rose, walked to the tall window, and looked out at the clear sky above the iron gates.“How good it would be if I were the one holding her hand and kissing her.”He took a slightly worn photograph of Leah from his inside pocket and gently stroked her smiling face with his thumb.I

There were no family interests tied to this wedding, no business partners waiting in side rooms to sign agreements, and no one judging whether a former driver’s daughter was worthy of the groom. Her mother sat in the front row dabbing at her eyes with a handkerchief while her father beamed and clapped harder than anyone else.Neighbors from their street, colleagues Leah had earned the respect of through her own work, and friends who genuinely cared for them filled the seats.Everyone who had come was there to give them their blessing.Adrian crouched down in front of Finn so they were at eye level and smiled.“Would you like to call me something different today?”Finn looked at him, his small hands tightening around the ribbon on the bouquet.“Dad.”Finn looked startled himself after saying the unfamiliar word out loud. For a second, the lawn seemed to go quiet around them. Then Finn’s ears turned pink, and he repeated it more firmly.“Dad.”Watching him, Leah shed tears.“Finn, that’s

“Don’t make me hate you.”Leah bit her lip until it hurt.He smiled with extreme gentleness, even as blood slipped down his wrist.“Hating me is fine too. It’s better than forgetting me.”“You’re truly insane.”“Yes, I’m insane.”Matteo looked at her with near obsession.“Only you can make me stop.”For a long moment, Leah said nothing. The scent of roses and blood hung together in the quiet chapel. She looked at the man in front of her—the man she had loved with all the courage of her youth, and the man who had taught her, piece by piece, how to stop loving him. Then she took a deep breath.“I refuse.”All color drained from his face at once.“I stopped loving you a long time ago, and I don’t care about what you call compensation.”Her voice was steady, clear enough for everyone by the door to hear.“Your life belongs to you, Matteo. Whether you live or die has nothing to do with Finn and me anymore. Nothing you do will change my decision.”At her signal, the doctor and bodyguards rus

“When I investigated her recently, I found out the Bellandi family had arranged that kidnapping from start to finish.”His voice shook with self-mockery.“No one was ever going to hurt her. They staged the whole thing because they wanted the Vitale family to owe them a life debt, and they wanted me to remember her forever.”Leah froze for a heartbeat, then let out a cold laugh.“So because you were lied to as a child, you took the methods they used on you and used them on Finn and me?”Her eyes were bright and merciless.“When you loved her, why didn’t you gamble with your own life? Why did you gamble with ours?”“Why was it Finn on that hospital bed? Why was it Finn bleeding in the go-kart lane? Why was it Finn crying into the phone on that cliff while you told the kidnappers to do whatever they wanted?”“I’m sorry.”Tears fell down Matteo’s face.“I was blind. I pushed away the people who truly loved me and kept the ones who were scheming against me by my side.”“I heard you begging
