Chapter 5

Author: Cece West
“Five million dollars,” the man said. “That’s what it costs for you two to go home alive.”

Leah’s lips had gone pale.

“He won’t come.”

The man laughed.

“Then let him tell me himself.”

The first call was rejected.

The second went unanswered.

Leah watched the screen until it went dark. For five years, she’d waited for that number to light up her phone. Now she was praying someone would answer it.

The man lost patience.

He grabbed Finn and dragged him away from her.

The boy struggled, scraped his hand, and cried for his mother.

Leah lunged after him.

Someone forced her back onto the floor.

“Don’t touch him! I’ll call again!”

She kept calling.

When Matteo finally answered, she could barely get the words out.

“Matteo, someone took me and Finn. They want a ransom. Please listen—”

“Haven’t you had enough?”

Nothing in his voice but irritation.

Leah went still.

“This isn’t a game. Finn’s hurt. They said—”

“First you leave the house. Then the amusement park. Now you’ve hired people to stage a kidnapping.”

He gave a cold laugh.

“You expect me to believe this?”

The kidnapper snatched the phone.

He named an old debt, something only people inside the family would know.

“Vitale. You know who we are. Pay what you owe if you want them back.”

For a moment, the line went quiet.

Leah lifted her head.

She thought he might at least ask where Finn was.

Instead, she heard Bianca.

“Matteo, Nico’s waiting.”

“I’ll be right there,” he said softly.

Then his voice hardened again.

“Don’t use her to test me. I’m not sending my men out for this little performance.”

The kidnapper held the phone to Finn’s mouth.

“Dad…”

Finn was crying too hard to breathe properly.

“I want to go home.”

Leah’s tears struck the floor.

“Did you hear him? That’s Finn. Please—”

“Leah, I don’t have time to play along.”

A pause.

“If you really want to hurt them, go ahead.”

The call ended.

Finn’s muffled sobs filled the warehouse.

The man stared at the dead screen, then kicked over a chair.

“He doesn’t even want his own son.”

Leah didn’t ask him to call again.

She crawled toward Finn until her shoulder touched his.

“Look at me.”

Her voice shook.

“Don’t be afraid. Look at Mom.”

His little hand was bleeding. She couldn’t reach it with her wrists bound.

He tried to lean closer anyway.

The men dragged them outside.

At the edge of a cliff above the sea, wind forced Finn’s eyes shut.

Leah pressed against him.

Someone cursed behind them.

Then the ground vanished.

As they fell, she used everything she had to pull Finn into her arms.

She didn’t wonder whether Matteo would regret it.

Before the sea filled her mouth and nose, she thought only of her son.

He was still so small.

He hadn’t even opened his new toy.

***

A monitor beeped.

Leah woke and tried to sit up.

“Finn!”

A nurse caught her shoulders.

“He’s next door. He’s out of danger. A coastal patrol found you both and brought you in.”

Leah barely heard the rest.

She got out of bed and made her way along the wall to the next room.

Finn sat on the bed, his hand bandaged, staring at the doorway.

When he saw her, he reached out.

“Mom.”

She crossed the room and held him carefully.

He didn’t burst into tears this time.

He kept gripping her clothes, checking that she was really there.

She let him.

For a long time, neither of them spoke. She could feel his fingers tightening whenever she shifted, so she stayed still.

Finally, he looked up.

“Can we stop calling Dad?”

She rested her cheek against his hair.

“We’ll never call him again.”

During their stay, the police took her statement. Her attorney came to help with what followed.

Leah didn’t contact Matteo.

When the divorce judgment arrived, she sat beside Finn’s bed and read the electronic copy from beginning to end.

Five years of marriage.

Finally over.

She checked the names, the dates, the arrangements for Finn.

Nothing on the page required her to wait for Matteo to come home.

Nothing asked her to try harder.

She saved the file.

Then she looked at her son.

He was asleep, his bandaged hand resting on the blanket. The bruises were still there. So was the stitched cut on his forehead.

A court document couldn’t undo those things.

But she could make sure he never went back.

Once the doctors cleared them both for discharge, Leah took the paperwork and returned to the basement apartment.

Finn sat on the bed while she opened their suitcase.

There wasn’t much to pack.

A few changes of clothes. His sketchbook. Their documents.

And the toy car, still sealed in its packaging.

Slowly, Leah took Adrian’s hand and laced her fingers through his.“If Finn asks about him one day and wants to know, you can tell him the truth,” she said softly. She looked up into her husband’s eyes.“Just don’t let him feel that any of it was his responsibility.”Finn was ten now—tall for his age, warmhearted, and quick to laugh. He had school friends, weekend soccer games with Adrian, and grandparents who still tried to pile too much food onto his plate every Sunday. His childhood had finally been given back to him.She wouldn’t let a shadow from the past weigh on his shoulders again.Adrian nodded solemnly.“I know. I’ll handle it carefully when the time comes.”Leah leaned close and kissed his lips lightly.“Some people can only stay in the past.”Adrian’s expression softened, and he held her securely in his arms.“Ready to go home?” he asked.“Ready. Dad called earlier to say he bought fresh salmon again, and Finn told him to save the biggest piece for me.”Adrian laughed and o

Three years later, outside a hospital clinic in St. Louis, Leah stood under the shade of the walkway looking at the test results in her hand. Her fingers trembled slightly against the edge of the paper.“What did the doctor say?”Having just parked the car, Adrian rushed over from the lot, his jacket open and his breath slightly quick as he took the slip from her hand.“Sorry, sweetheart, there were too many cars today. Parking took forever, and I was worried you’d be waiting alone—”His voice cut off mid-sentence.When he saw the words printed on the page, he stopped short, stared for two full seconds, and then broke into wild joy. With tears shining in her eyes, Leah nodded at him.“I’m pregnant.”Adrian carefully folded the report into his pocket first so he wouldn’t crumple it, then pulled her excitedly into his arms, laughing like a child.“That’s wonderful! Finn is going to have a little brother or sister!”“He’ll be thrilled,” Leah said, laughing against his shoulder. “He’s been

Hundreds of miles away at the Vitale estate, the curtains in the study were half drawn.Matteo sat alone behind his wide desk, watching the wedding clip on his phone. It was a short video a guest had posted on a social media account earlier that afternoon. In the frame, sunlight fell over the lawn. Leah was smiling with her head tilted slightly toward Adrian, and Finn stood between them in his small white suit, holding both their hands. No one in that picture was afraid. No one was looking at the doors for guards, and no one was being forced to stay.Matteo watched the clip through to the end three times before he slowly shut off the screen. In the black glass of the phone, he saw only his own hollow face.He rose, walked to the tall window, and looked out at the clear sky above the iron gates.“How good it would be if I were the one holding her hand and kissing her.”He took a slightly worn photograph of Leah from his inside pocket and gently stroked her smiling face with his thumb.I

There were no family interests tied to this wedding, no business partners waiting in side rooms to sign agreements, and no one judging whether a former driver’s daughter was worthy of the groom. Her mother sat in the front row dabbing at her eyes with a handkerchief while her father beamed and clapped harder than anyone else.Neighbors from their street, colleagues Leah had earned the respect of through her own work, and friends who genuinely cared for them filled the seats.Everyone who had come was there to give them their blessing.Adrian crouched down in front of Finn so they were at eye level and smiled.“Would you like to call me something different today?”Finn looked at him, his small hands tightening around the ribbon on the bouquet.“Dad.”Finn looked startled himself after saying the unfamiliar word out loud. For a second, the lawn seemed to go quiet around them. Then Finn’s ears turned pink, and he repeated it more firmly.“Dad.”Watching him, Leah shed tears.“Finn, that’s

“Don’t make me hate you.”Leah bit her lip until it hurt.He smiled with extreme gentleness, even as blood slipped down his wrist.“Hating me is fine too. It’s better than forgetting me.”“You’re truly insane.”“Yes, I’m insane.”Matteo looked at her with near obsession.“Only you can make me stop.”For a long moment, Leah said nothing. The scent of roses and blood hung together in the quiet chapel. She looked at the man in front of her—the man she had loved with all the courage of her youth, and the man who had taught her, piece by piece, how to stop loving him. Then she took a deep breath.“I refuse.”All color drained from his face at once.“I stopped loving you a long time ago, and I don’t care about what you call compensation.”Her voice was steady, clear enough for everyone by the door to hear.“Your life belongs to you, Matteo. Whether you live or die has nothing to do with Finn and me anymore. Nothing you do will change my decision.”At her signal, the doctor and bodyguards rus

“When I investigated her recently, I found out the Bellandi family had arranged that kidnapping from start to finish.”His voice shook with self-mockery.“No one was ever going to hurt her. They staged the whole thing because they wanted the Vitale family to owe them a life debt, and they wanted me to remember her forever.”Leah froze for a heartbeat, then let out a cold laugh.“So because you were lied to as a child, you took the methods they used on you and used them on Finn and me?”Her eyes were bright and merciless.“When you loved her, why didn’t you gamble with your own life? Why did you gamble with ours?”“Why was it Finn on that hospital bed? Why was it Finn bleeding in the go-kart lane? Why was it Finn crying into the phone on that cliff while you told the kidnappers to do whatever they wanted?”“I’m sorry.”Tears fell down Matteo’s face.“I was blind. I pushed away the people who truly loved me and kept the ones who were scheming against me by my side.”“I heard you begging
