Chapter 6

Author: Cece West
Matteo had left even less behind.

One old jacket. Two shirts. A razor he’d never charged.

Leah put them in a trash bag.

For years, those few things had made the apartment feel like a place he might return to. She had washed the shirts and kept the jacket where he could find it.

Now they were just things he hadn’t taken.

Behind her, the door opened.

“What is it this time?”

Matteo stood in the doorway, looking at the suitcase.

His gaze passed over the bandages on Finn’s hand.

It stopped there for a moment.

He still didn’t go to him.

“When you’re done with your little act, clean this place up.”

Leah closed the suitcase.

The zipper caught on a sleeve. She freed it carefully and pulled it the rest of the way.

Matteo came closer and grabbed her wrist.

“I’m talking to you.”

Finn jumped off the bed.

“Don’t touch my mom!”

Matteo stared at him.

The boy stood behind the suitcase, his uninjured hand clenched. He wasn’t asking when his father would come home.

He was asking him to stop.

Leah pulled free and stepped in front of Finn.

“Get out.”

Matteo looked at her as though he’d never heard her speak before.

For a few seconds, he said nothing.

Then he laughed, angry now.

“Think carefully. If you actually move out, don’t expect me to come get you.”

Leah nodded.

“I won’t be waiting.”

His face darkened.

He looked from her to Finn, as though one of them might soften.

Neither moved.

Finally, he turned and slammed the door.

He didn’t believe her.

For five years, Leah had always been the first to give in. Finn had always chased after him, asking when he’d return.

Why would this time be different?

Leah listened until his footsteps faded.

Then she took a copy of the divorce judgment from her document folder and laid it flat on the table.

At their wedding, she’d given him the only valuable jewelry she owned.

Leaving, she wouldn’t give him another plea to come back.

The papers said what needed saying.

She checked their documents once more and put the originals into her bag. Finn watched from beside the bed.

She left Matteo’s copy where he couldn’t miss it.

Then she picked up the suitcase and held out her hand.

“Let’s go.”

Finn took it.

At the doorway, Leah paused to make sure she had the keys.

Not to wait for him.

Not to leave the door unlocked in case he came home late.

Just to finish the last thing she needed to do before leaving.

They stepped outside together.

The suitcase wheels rattled behind them.

Finn stayed close as they made their way up from the basement. Leah kept his hand in hers and matched her pace to his.

He was still recovering. There was no need to hurry him.

They had spent enough of their lives hurrying for someone else.

At the airport, he sat beside her while she checked their boarding passes.

His feet didn’t reach the floor.

He leaned against her arm for a while, watching travelers pass with coats, bags, and children of their own.

Then he looked down at the toy car.

For days, he’d held it without opening it.

Now he began picking at the edge of the packaging.

Leah helped loosen the plastic, careful of his injured hand.

He lifted the little car out and turned it over.

“Mom?”

She put the empty packaging away.

“Does our new home have windows?”

Her throat tightened.

“Yes. The sun will come in every morning.”

He considered that, running a finger along the car’s roof.

“And no one will come for money?”

“No.”

“No more paying Dad’s debt?”

“No more.”

He looked up at her.

She didn’t add a promise about his father. She didn’t tell him Matteo would understand someday, or that he’d come looking once he realized they were gone.

Those weren’t things Finn needed to carry.

She could tell him about their home.

She could tell him there would be light.

That was enough for now.

The boarding announcement sounded.

Leah checked the gate number and stood.

Finn tucked the car into his pocket. This time, he reached for her hand before she offered it.

She picked up their bag.

Around them, people gathered their belongings and joined the line. No one knew what they were leaving behind.

Leah was glad.

They didn’t need to explain themselves to walk through a gate.

Finn glanced back once, toward the seats where they’d been waiting.

Then he looked ahead.

She led him toward the plane.

This time, she wasn’t leaving a door open for Matteo.

She was taking her son home.

Dad called earlier to say he bought fresh salmon again, and Finn told him to save the biggest piece for me.”Adrian laughed and o

Three years later, outside a hospital clinic in St. Louis, Leah stood under the shade of the walkway looking at the test results in her hand. Her fingers trembled slightly against the edge of the paper.“What did the doctor say?”Having just parked the car, Adrian rushed over from the lot, his jacket open and his breath slightly quick as he took the slip from her hand.“Sorry, sweetheart, there were too many cars today. Parking took forever, and I was worried you’d be waiting alone—”His voice cut off mid-sentence.When he saw the words printed on the page, he stopped short, stared for two full seconds, and then broke into wild joy. With tears shining in her eyes, Leah nodded at him.“I’m pregnant.”Adrian carefully folded the report into his pocket first so he wouldn’t crumple it, then pulled her excitedly into his arms, laughing like a child.“That’s wonderful! Finn is going to have a little brother or sister!”“He’ll be thrilled,” Leah said, laughing against his shoulder. “He’s been

Hundreds of miles away at the Vitale estate, the curtains in the study were half drawn.Matteo sat alone behind his wide desk, watching the wedding clip on his phone. It was a short video a guest had posted on a social media account earlier that afternoon. In the frame, sunlight fell over the lawn. Leah was smiling with her head tilted slightly toward Adrian, and Finn stood between them in his small white suit, holding both their hands. No one in that picture was afraid. No one was looking at the doors for guards, and no one was being forced to stay.Matteo watched the clip through to the end three times before he slowly shut off the screen. In the black glass of the phone, he saw only his own hollow face.He rose, walked to the tall window, and looked out at the clear sky above the iron gates.“How good it would be if I were the one holding her hand and kissing her.”He took a slightly worn photograph of Leah from his inside pocket and gently stroked her smiling face with his thumb.I

There were no family interests tied to this wedding, no business partners waiting in side rooms to sign agreements, and no one judging whether a former driver’s daughter was worthy of the groom. Her mother sat in the front row dabbing at her eyes with a handkerchief while her father beamed and clapped harder than anyone else.Neighbors from their street, colleagues Leah had earned the respect of through her own work, and friends who genuinely cared for them filled the seats.Everyone who had come was there to give them their blessing.Adrian crouched down in front of Finn so they were at eye level and smiled.“Would you like to call me something different today?”Finn looked at him, his small hands tightening around the ribbon on the bouquet.“Dad.”Finn looked startled himself after saying the unfamiliar word out loud. For a second, the lawn seemed to go quiet around them. Then Finn’s ears turned pink, and he repeated it more firmly.“Dad.”Watching him, Leah shed tears.“Finn, that’s

“Don’t make me hate you.”Leah bit her lip until it hurt.He smiled with extreme gentleness, even as blood slipped down his wrist.“Hating me is fine too. It’s better than forgetting me.”“You’re truly insane.”“Yes, I’m insane.”Matteo looked at her with near obsession.“Only you can make me stop.”For a long moment, Leah said nothing. The scent of roses and blood hung together in the quiet chapel. She looked at the man in front of her—the man she had loved with all the courage of her youth, and the man who had taught her, piece by piece, how to stop loving him. Then she took a deep breath.“I refuse.”All color drained from his face at once.“I stopped loving you a long time ago, and I don’t care about what you call compensation.”Her voice was steady, clear enough for everyone by the door to hear.“Your life belongs to you, Matteo. Whether you live or die has nothing to do with Finn and me anymore. Nothing you do will change my decision.”At her signal, the doctor and bodyguards rus

“When I investigated her recently, I found out the Bellandi family had arranged that kidnapping from start to finish.”His voice shook with self-mockery.“No one was ever going to hurt her. They staged the whole thing because they wanted the Vitale family to owe them a life debt, and they wanted me to remember her forever.”Leah froze for a heartbeat, then let out a cold laugh.“So because you were lied to as a child, you took the methods they used on you and used them on Finn and me?”Her eyes were bright and merciless.“When you loved her, why didn’t you gamble with your own life? Why did you gamble with ours?”“Why was it Finn on that hospital bed? Why was it Finn bleeding in the go-kart lane? Why was it Finn crying into the phone on that cliff while you told the kidnappers to do whatever they wanted?”“I’m sorry.”Tears fell down Matteo’s face.“I was blind. I pushed away the people who truly loved me and kept the ones who were scheming against me by my side.”“I heard you begging
