Chapter 2

Author: Wavy
"You madwoman! Sierra, you're a madwoman! Martin, what should we do? The viewers in the live stream are going wild, and the number one donor even says he wants to see her actually shoot…" Sierra whined.

"Shut up!" Martin yelled back.

"Three… Two…"

Just as I was about to pull the trigger, Martin almost roared out, "Don't! I'll open it! I'll open it right now!"

I breathed a sigh of relief, but my body trembled even more violently from the release of tension.

However, half a minute had passed without anything happening. By now, I was even finding it hard to breathe.

The heavy freezer door remained completely motionless.

Martin's voice came through the walkie-talkie again, "Oops, Sierra, I'm really sorry. I was too nervous just now and entered the wrong electronic lock password three times. The system has automatically locked down.

"Now… we'll have to wait for an engineer to come and unlock it."

After hearing what he said, I felt my heart sink into the abyss. The nearest engineer to the company would take at least an hour to arrive.

"Martin, are you messing with me?" I questioned.

"How can you say that?" His voice held unconcealed delight, as if he was savoring my despair. "This is called fate. God wants you to cool off properly in there."

Lilian also pretended to weakly cut in. "Sierra, since you can't get out anyway, why not go along with our live stream? The viewers all say they want to see the pitiful and frail look of the Ice Queen in the freezer.

"The number one donor just sent ten more rockets and said if you dance, he'll send ten more!"

I shook with rage, though I couldn't actually tell if it was because of the cold or my fury.

They never intended to let me out from the very beginning. The "wrong password" was just an excuse to buy time and continue this cruel live stream!

"Martin, aren't you afraid I might actually destroy this thing?"

I raised the flare gun again, but this time, my hand shook so badly that I could barely hold it.

"You won't," Martin replied.

He showed no trace of panic anymore and only said with certainty, "Sierra, I know you too well. You're very responsible, and you value the company's interests more than your own life. Last time, in order to rush a shipment, you stayed at the warehouse even with a high fever. This time is the same.

"You can't bear to destroy it. You wouldn't dare to."

His words were like a knife, precisely stabbing into my heart.

It was true that he understood me, but he was using my sense of responsibility to put me in a fatal situation.

"Moreover, I advise you not to act recklessly," he added, his voice turning cold.

"I've already reported to Ms. Jameson that you're doing a routine check and that to ensure everything is perfect, you'll be on duty in the freezer area tonight. Ms. Jameson even praised your dedication and said she'd give you a bonus.

"If you dare touch that thing, how will you explain it when Ms. Jameson arrives?"

How shameless! He twisted the truth and blocked all of my paths out.

If something were to happen to me here, it would be an accident as a result of "dedication". But if I destroyed the cargo to survive, it would be "internal theft and malicious sabotage". No matter what the outcome was, I would lose.

A chill rose from the soles of my feet and quickly spread throughout my body, even seeping into my bones. I felt my consciousness beginning to blur and my vision growing dim.

No, I couldn't die here!

I leaned against the cold shelves and forced myself to stand steady.

"Martin… for the sake of our upcoming marriage…" I spoke with a hint of pleading in my voice—this was my last hope. "If you just let me out, I could pretend today never happened."

There was a moment of silence on the other end of the walkie-talkie.

I almost thought he would soften, but a casual remark from Lilian completely shattered my illusion.

"Oh, Sierra, you still don't know? Martin has decided to call off the engagement with you. He said being with you was too exhausting, as though he were treasuring an ice block that couldn't be warmed. Besides…"

Lilian deliberately drew out her words, her tone filled with boasting and pride. "I'm already pregnant with Martin's child. We're getting engaged next month."

With an imaginary explosion going off inside my head, I felt my mind go blank.

Pregnant? Martin called off the engagement?

So, all of this hadn't been a spontaneous prank. Instead, it was a premeditated murder. They wanted me dead so they could be together legitimately.

"Sierra, don't blame me," Martin said again, his voice icy and devoid of any emotion.

The "heir" that Martin had so fervently longed for had, from the very beginning, no connection to him whatsoever. The "haven of a warm home" he dreamed of was nothing but the delusion of a foolish and greedy woman. His life, his pride, and everything about him had utterly become a joke.…Martin learned about all of it in prison. His lawyer had told him during a meeting.I didn't know what expression he had at that time. I only knew that from that day on, he went insane. He started constantly attacking others in prison, lashing out at anyone he saw.He always kept repeating only one phrase."My son…"Later, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and transferred from prison to a mental hospital. The Clays faced their complete downfall after that. Due to excessive shock, Mr. Clay suffered a stroke and became partially paralyzed. Mrs. Clay couldn't bear the blow. She cried all day long and told everyone that I was a jinx, while Lilian was a vixen. As for Lilian, after the hospital

"What?" I walked to Lilian's bedside and looked down at her. "Don't recognize me?"Lilian bit her lip and remained silent."The baby is very cute."I looked at the infant and said softly, "It's just that the skin tone doesn't really resemble Martin's.""Nonsense!" Lilian yelled, suddenly becoming agitated. "He's Martin's child! He is!""Is that so?" I smiled. "That's really interesting then. The 'heir' that Martin longed for so much that he was willing to kill his fiancee turns out to be… mixed-race?""I didn't do it!"Lilian had a complete emotional breakdown at that. She grabbed a pillow from the bed and threw it at me."So what if the child is different than usual? That's still top-tier genetics! It's a hundred times better than a woman like you who can't have children!"Her words silenced the entire room.Martin's parents stood frozen in place as if struck by lightning.Top-tier genetics? That phrase felt so familiar.Suddenly, I recalled something. That once-in-a-centu

The alleged "tribal chief's son" was simply a story Ms. Jameson fabricated to cover her tracks. She wouldn't dare let this matter be investigated further. After a long moment, she took a deep breath and said to her lawyer, "We're dropping the lawsuit."…When I walked out of the courthouse, the sunlight was blinding.I had won.Although I lost my job, used up all my savings, and was saddled with debt, I had survived. I also didn't have to go to prison or bear tens of millions of dollars in debt. That was enough for me.I went to a restaurant and ordered a plate of piping hot pasta. As I ate, tears started spilling out. I didn't know why I was crying. Was it for the love that had died? For the shattered trust? Or for myself, having narrowly escaped death?…I very quickly found a new job. It was at a small logistics company, and I was still working in quality control. It was hard, but I managed to live a stable and honest life.Lilian still sent me messages from time to time.

Having damaged company property, a civil lawsuit was unavoidable. After confirming her "precious son" was safe and sound, Ms. Jameson finally remembered my existence. The cost of repairing the insulation and cooling system was an astronomical figure, and so she brought me to court. On the day of the hearing, Martin's parents also attended the proceedings. They rushed up to me, hitting and cursing at me."You jinx! You've ruined our family!""You got my son sent to prison! What more do you want?""Pay up! Compensate us for wasting our son's youth!"The bailiffs stopped them.As I looked at their twisted expressions, I only found the whole thing ridiculous. Their son tried to kill someone, yet they saw no wrong in it. I destroyed some things to save my own life, yet I became an unforgivable criminal. In court, Ms. Jameson's lawyer was aggressive in his delivery."Sierra, as the company's quality control supervisor, you were fully aware of the importance of the freezer's insulati

The interrogation room at the police station was dimly lit. I watched Martin and Lilian in the next room through the one-way glass. They were still putting on their act."Officers, we've been falsely accused! We really were just joking with her!""Yeah, it's that kind of prank on a live stream. It's very popular online now. We never thought she'd take it seriously, let alone set a fire.""She's usually under too much pressure and is a bit mentally unstable."Their excuses were exactly the same as what my parents had said back then.As I looked at them, my heart felt as though it was being gripped tightly by an invisible hand. The police officers took out a tablet and played a video. It was a screen recording from the live stream platform that had been provided by an anonymous source. In the video, Martin's wild laughter and Lilian's playful grumbling were crystal clear."We're live-streaming and challenging the company's 'Ice Queen' to be locked in the freezer. Let's see how lo

Martin and Lilian walked in, and behind them were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clay."Ira, you're awake! Thank God!"Mrs. Clay rushed to my bedside and squeezed out a few crocodile tears. "Sierra, why did you take things so seriously? Even if you didn't agree with Martin and Lily's relationship, you shouldn't have set a fire to kill yourself!"I looked at her speechlessly. The whole family was really good at twisting the truth.Mr. Clay had a stern expression as he said in a sagely tone, "Sierra, you've gone too far with this! The company suffered heavy losses, and Ms. Jameson is very angry. Martin and Lily lost their jobs and are facing huge compensation claims! Are you satisfied now?"I looked at them coldly. "What are you talking about?"My voice was hoarse, almost sounding as though it was rubbing against sandpaper. "What do you mean I set a fire to kill myself?"Lilian immediately hid behind Martin and put on an aggrieved expression. "Sierra, we know you're angry, but you can'
