Chapter 3

Author: Wavy
Martin rambled on, "If you want to blame someone, blame yourself for being too dull and too domineering. Lily is gentler than you, and she understands how to care for a man better than you do. She's different from you.

"Just die in peace. Lily will take good care of everything for you—your career, your love life…"

Feelings of despair wrapped around me like a huge net, trapping me tightly. I slid down against the shelving and sat on the floor, feeling the energy slowly drain from my body.

Just then, footsteps echoed from outside the freezer, followed by a weathered voice inquiring, "Martin, you're still not off work this late? What are you doing in the monitoring room?"

It was Wallace Carr, the night-shift security guard!

A flicker of hope ignited in my heart. I mustered all my strength, grabbed the walkie-talkie, and screamed, "Wallace! Save me! I'm locked in the freezer!"

As soon as my cry for help rang out, Martin's calm voice came through the walkie-talkie, "Hey, Wallace, you're still on duty? We're just working overtime here."

Martin seemed to have switched the walkie-talkie off the public channel, which meant Wallace hadn't heard my plea.

Martin added, "Oh, Sierra is inside doing the final inventory check. It's the final shipment before Independence Day, and she didn't feel at ease, so she insisted on personally supervising it. We're just here keeping her company in case something happens and she needs assistance."

Lilian immediately echoed his sentiments in an overly sugary tone, saying, "Yeah, Wallace. Sierra is so dedicated. We all tried to persuade her to rest early, but she just refused. She even said the freezer is cool and helps her think about work calmly."

Wallace seemed convinced by them, and his tone showed his approval. "Oh, Sierra is really responsible. You've all worked hard, too.

"Alright, I'll leave you to it, then. I'll make my rounds elsewhere."

The sound of footsteps gradually faded away.

My last shred of hope was destroyed by them so casually. I slumped on the floor and stared hopelessly at the tightly shut door.

The walkie-talkie was switched back to the private channel, and Martin's mocking laughter came through clearly.

"Did you hear that, Sierra? Everyone thinks you're a workaholic and a tough woman. Even if you freeze to death in there, you'll just be seen as a model worker who died on duty. You'll even become a positive example for educating new employees."

Lilian's laughter became even more uninhibited. "Sierra, listen. The number one donor just gifted ten more roses! He said if you get on your knees right now and bark like a puppy a few times, he'll have Martin raise the temperature a bit. How about that? You want to consider it?"

This was humiliation, just blatant humiliation. Not only did they want to take my life, but they also wanted to trample and crush my dignity before I died.

I gritted my teeth, and the taste of blood spread in my mouth. My body grew colder, and my eyelids felt as heavy as if they were lead-filled.

I knew these were signs of hypothermia progressing to mid or late stages. If this continued, it wouldn't be long before I fell into a coma, and then my heart would stop.

Was I really going to die here? In a trap carefully designed by my own fiance and his mistress?

I couldn't accept it. I was really unwilling to accept this!

Summoning the last bit of my strength, I gripped onto the shelves and staggered to my feet.

Since they left me no way out, then we could all go down together!

Just as I was about to slip, I used the final ounce of strength in my body to steady my hand holding the gun.

I no longer aimed at that test tube. Instead, I raised it slightly, aiming at the yellow, deadly insulation layer above the shelves.

Martin finally seemed to sense that something was wrong based on my actions, and his arrogant laughter stopped.

"You… Are you being serious?"

For the first time, a hint of genuine panic appeared in his voice.

I didn't answer him. I simply used all my strength to pull the trigger.

A muffled gunshot rang out, and a blinding red flame—like an angry, fiery snake—instantly shot toward that yellow foam!

In the next second, flames erupted with a loud bang.

A heart-wrenching scream from Lilian sounded through the walkie-talkie.

"Fire! Ah!"

Following that was Martin's terrified roar. "Hurry! Put out the fire! Damn it!"

However, it was all too late.

The piercing fire alarm, loud enough to be heard throughout the entire factory floor, was instantly triggered.

That sound drowned out all the maniacal laughter and screams.

The "heir" that Martin had so fervently longed for had, from the very beginning, no connection to him whatsoever. The "haven of a warm home" he dreamed of was nothing but the delusion of a foolish and greedy woman. His life, his pride, and everything about him had utterly become a joke.…Martin learned about all of it in prison. His lawyer had told him during a meeting.I didn't know what expression he had at that time. I only knew that from that day on, he went insane. He started constantly attacking others in prison, lashing out at anyone he saw.He always kept repeating only one phrase."My son…"Later, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and transferred from prison to a mental hospital. The Clays faced their complete downfall after that. Due to excessive shock, Mr. Clay suffered a stroke and became partially paralyzed. Mrs. Clay couldn't bear the blow. She cried all day long and told everyone that I was a jinx, while Lilian was a vixen. As for Lilian, after the hospital

"What?" I walked to Lilian's bedside and looked down at her. "Don't recognize me?"Lilian bit her lip and remained silent."The baby is very cute."I looked at the infant and said softly, "It's just that the skin tone doesn't really resemble Martin's.""Nonsense!" Lilian yelled, suddenly becoming agitated. "He's Martin's child! He is!""Is that so?" I smiled. "That's really interesting then. The 'heir' that Martin longed for so much that he was willing to kill his fiancee turns out to be… mixed-race?""I didn't do it!"Lilian had a complete emotional breakdown at that. She grabbed a pillow from the bed and threw it at me."So what if the child is different than usual? That's still top-tier genetics! It's a hundred times better than a woman like you who can't have children!"Her words silenced the entire room.Martin's parents stood frozen in place as if struck by lightning.Top-tier genetics? That phrase felt so familiar.Suddenly, I recalled something. That once-in-a-centu

The alleged "tribal chief's son" was simply a story Ms. Jameson fabricated to cover her tracks. She wouldn't dare let this matter be investigated further. After a long moment, she took a deep breath and said to her lawyer, "We're dropping the lawsuit."…When I walked out of the courthouse, the sunlight was blinding.I had won.Although I lost my job, used up all my savings, and was saddled with debt, I had survived. I also didn't have to go to prison or bear tens of millions of dollars in debt. That was enough for me.I went to a restaurant and ordered a plate of piping hot pasta. As I ate, tears started spilling out. I didn't know why I was crying. Was it for the love that had died? For the shattered trust? Or for myself, having narrowly escaped death?…I very quickly found a new job. It was at a small logistics company, and I was still working in quality control. It was hard, but I managed to live a stable and honest life.Lilian still sent me messages from time to time.

Having damaged company property, a civil lawsuit was unavoidable. After confirming her "precious son" was safe and sound, Ms. Jameson finally remembered my existence. The cost of repairing the insulation and cooling system was an astronomical figure, and so she brought me to court. On the day of the hearing, Martin's parents also attended the proceedings. They rushed up to me, hitting and cursing at me."You jinx! You've ruined our family!""You got my son sent to prison! What more do you want?""Pay up! Compensate us for wasting our son's youth!"The bailiffs stopped them.As I looked at their twisted expressions, I only found the whole thing ridiculous. Their son tried to kill someone, yet they saw no wrong in it. I destroyed some things to save my own life, yet I became an unforgivable criminal. In court, Ms. Jameson's lawyer was aggressive in his delivery."Sierra, as the company's quality control supervisor, you were fully aware of the importance of the freezer's insulati

The interrogation room at the police station was dimly lit. I watched Martin and Lilian in the next room through the one-way glass. They were still putting on their act."Officers, we've been falsely accused! We really were just joking with her!""Yeah, it's that kind of prank on a live stream. It's very popular online now. We never thought she'd take it seriously, let alone set a fire.""She's usually under too much pressure and is a bit mentally unstable."Their excuses were exactly the same as what my parents had said back then.As I looked at them, my heart felt as though it was being gripped tightly by an invisible hand. The police officers took out a tablet and played a video. It was a screen recording from the live stream platform that had been provided by an anonymous source. In the video, Martin's wild laughter and Lilian's playful grumbling were crystal clear."We're live-streaming and challenging the company's 'Ice Queen' to be locked in the freezer. Let's see how lo

Martin and Lilian walked in, and behind them were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clay."Ira, you're awake! Thank God!"Mrs. Clay rushed to my bedside and squeezed out a few crocodile tears. "Sierra, why did you take things so seriously? Even if you didn't agree with Martin and Lily's relationship, you shouldn't have set a fire to kill yourself!"I looked at her speechlessly. The whole family was really good at twisting the truth.Mr. Clay had a stern expression as he said in a sagely tone, "Sierra, you've gone too far with this! The company suffered heavy losses, and Ms. Jameson is very angry. Martin and Lily lost their jobs and are facing huge compensation claims! Are you satisfied now?"I looked at them coldly. "What are you talking about?"My voice was hoarse, almost sounding as though it was rubbing against sandpaper. "What do you mean I set a fire to kill myself?"Lilian immediately hid behind Martin and put on an aggrieved expression. "Sierra, we know you're angry, but you can'
