Chapter 7

Author: Ginger
After that day, Charles shut himself in his room for a long time.

When he came out, even the way he looked at me was humble and eager to please. "Zoe, what do you want to eat? Let me cook for you, okay? We could go to the mall. Anything you like, I'll buy it."

He never brought up what he had done to me again. He never asked what I intended to do about it. He simply turned the page on the ugliest thing about himself and tried to make up for it by being good to me.

I didn't object to any of it. I

The full truth about my mother's fake death came out too. She had been an Alpha's mate, yet she had done something monstrous to deceive her own daughter. The pack spat her out. Before Charles killed her, Vivian had already spread the story. The reason was simple. Marlene had appeared to come to her senses and had stopped taking Vivian in. Vivian had always been a rogue, and once she lost her protection, she went on a campaign of revenge. Now my mother had been driven out of the pack as well. A dead woman has no standing in any pack.So she came to me. At the sight of me, her legs buckled and she collapsed to the floor, her face a mess of tears and snot."Zoe! Forgive me! Vivian lied to me. She told me what she and Charles had was real love, and you were always so suspicious of everything, so I..." She wept and begged, more abject than I had ever seen her. "Zoe, please forgive me. You're the Alpha's heir. If you say yes, I can still live here. Otherwise, I honestly don't know where I'd

After that day, Charles cut off all contact with Vivian.Vivian had lived entirely off a man and no longer knew how to survive on her own. After he turned her away twice in a row, she snapped.A few days later, almost everyone in the pack received explicit photos of the two of them in bed. That was how she meant to force Charles to come to her.Charles hunted her down and demanded to know why, shaking with rage. Vivian only smiled a little and let him see exactly who she was. "You're the Alpha of this pack. Once your people see you like that, do you think anyone will follow you? If their own Alpha can't be loyal, nobody is going to be loyal to him.""What the hell do you want from me!"Vivian swung her hips against him and hooked her arms around his neck, and he threw her off. It didn't bother her. Her smile only got lovelier. "A hundred million dollars and I disappear. I don't imagine you want your enemies getting a look at these pictures."Charles stared at the beautiful woman in fro

I treated him as a live-in servant I didn't have to pay. When I ate the steak he cooked, he was thrilled, sure I had forgiven him. But I refused to respond to anything he said, and I never gave him another look. It broke him.One day, while he was working through a new recipe, someone knocked.Even with a closed door between us, my body moved without my mind's permission. When I opened it, a woman stood there whose clothes and overall appearance were unfamiliar to me. But I knew who she was: the m

After a night under observation at Dr. Merrick's, Charles brought me back to his pack. Everything there felt foreign to me, and a deep, instinctive revulsion stirred inside me.At a loss, he watched me stand in the middle of the living room, then squeezed out a smile. "Do you remember, Zoe? This whole place was decorated the way you like it."I contradicted him at once. "That's impossible. Nothing in here feels like me."His hand stilled as he made the coffee. Something had occurred to him. When the house was being decorated, he had in fact asked me what style I wanted. But Vivian had been right there the whole time, "helpfully" chiming in. "Zoe would love this couch. The curtains should be this color. The table would be better in something antique..."And he had listened to every word she said and never once asked my opinion. He had made me live for four years in a home designed by someone else.It landed on him then, and he panicked. He was regretting it, and he was afraid. Regrettin

"Zoe, it's me. It's Charles!" He forced out another strained smile and reached for my face.I recoiled at once and watched him warily. But he kept coming closer, and a violent fear rose up in me."Help!" I screamed, leaped out of bed barefoot, and ran straight into Dr. Merrick.I hid behind her and clung to the hem of her coat. "Who is that man? Why is he here? Make him leave, make him leave!"Charles looked helplessly at Dr. Merrick, asking her without words. She sighed and shook her head with regret. "Charles, as you can see, Zoe has lost her memory.""What?" Charles had gone white. "What do you mean, lost her memory?"Dr. Merrick spread her hands. "She's had a severe shock. Her wolf is completely gone, and she can't feel the bond to her mate or to her family at all. Her mind is in chaos, and it has torn out the memories that were hurting her."She sighed again. "She doesn't know you. That means you are the memory that was hurting her. She chose to forget. It's the body protecting it

That evening Charles dropped me at home and left, but not before making me a cup of coffee. But I had seen him slip sleeping pills into it. Only after I pretended to take a sip did he leave, apparently satisfied.Once he was gone I spat the coffee out, took the plainest car in the garage and followed him. Exactly as I expected, he did no work at all. He drove out to an estate on the edge of town.I followed at a distance, and the closer we got to his destination, the stronger my unease became.I couldn't shake the sense that this was not simply a date with Vivian. There had to be someone else waiting there.I watched Vivian come running out of the house and throw herself into his arms, and I watched the two of them kiss like nothing else existed.Charles walked her inside with his arm around her, and through the huge floor-to-ceiling windows I could see everything. The place was furnished more finely, more lavishly, than the house I shared with him. Under the crystal chandelier stood a
