After moving out of the Blackthorn main house, I settled into my parents' apartment on the western edge of the territory. Silas, as usual, did not contact me.

That day I was walking through Market Street with my best friend, Freya. She scrolled through her phone while cursing Silas, then suddenly went quiet.

"I saw Iris’ update," she said cautiously. "She is at Moonstone Hot Springs with Silas. In the photo, he is smiling."

I said nothing. In the past, after every time I gave way, I compulsively checked Iris’ updates. I zoomed in on every photo, staring at his expression until my eyes ached. This time, I did not.

Freya softened. "You gave way again?"

Only she knew the history. Every step aside, every reconciliation, every time I thought it would be the last.

"Yes."

She sighed, offering a few comforting words. I listened without emotion. I had intended to tell her about leaving Blackthorn, but her phone vibrated. Her expression changed as she looked at it.

"Calla, look at this."

It was an official announcement from the Blackthorn Pack:

[Luna duties suspended due to political conflict. Iris Nightingale to reside in Alpha residence as a protected ward, effective immediately.]

Comments had already appeared. Some asked who Iris was. Some speculated what had happened. Others accused the announcement of simply giving a new title to a mistress.

Freya clenched her teeth. "He even had you sign off on this. Who does he think he is?"

I did not answer. I handed her a document from my bag.

"The mate bond release agreement," I said. "I registered it at City Hall this morning. It will take effect in seven days."

Freya froze. "You… you are serious?"

"Yes."

She knew me long enough to understand how I reacted after signing authorization papers. I would cry, yell, lock Silas’ gifts away, then take them out a few days later. This time, she saw nothing.

She flipped the document several times, then sighed. "So the authorization Silas signed before… it was actually this?"

"Serves him right," she added.

I smiled slightly. Yes, it did.

We walked along Market Street. Moonlight glimmered on the cobblestones. The air smelled of moon herbs and earth. My wolf rested quietly in my chest.

"By the way," Freya said, "what were you going to say earlier?"

"Nothing," I replied. "I will tell you later."

Soon, the mate bond termination would take effect, and I would leave this territory. There was no rush.
