Chapter 4

مؤلف: September
To avoid Silas interfering, I moved out of the apartment early and stayed in a hotel a few blocks from City Hall.

I did not expect the first call would be from Iris Nightingale.

I had heard her voice in Silas’ phone before, soft and gentle, like moonlight grass swaying in the wind. This time it was different.

“Calla Hayes,” she said, her voice cold. “You gave way five times. Don’t you see who he really loves?”

I did not answer.

“The first time you said he was soft. The second time you said he had no choice. The third time you said it would be the last.” She laughed lightly. “Five times. How long will you keep lying to yourself?”

I gripped my phone tightly.

“Do you know why he chooses you each time?” Iris continued. “Because I need him. You don’t need me. You have your own territory, your own pack, the Hale Pack supporting you. I have nothing.”

“So?” I asked.

“So he will never choose you,” she said evenly. “He will only temporarily place you in that position. When I truly need him, he will give it to me. Over and over. Haven’t you realized it?”

I closed my eyes. “You called just to say this?”

“I only want you to know,” Iris said softly. “You gave way five times, not to protect me. It is because he never truly put you first.”

The call ended.

I sat on the hotel bed as the screen went dark.

I did not cry. I had cried the first time I gave way. The third time I knelt before Silas, holding his legs, asking what I had done wrong. The fifth time I had learned to pack silently, expressionless.

Iris was wrong. I was not unaware. I just did not want to see it.

I did not sleep that night. I sat on the sofa and looked at the moon through the window. Moonlight poured in, bright and cold, filling the room like an ice cellar.

Tomorrow was the seventh day.

By then, Silas would expect me to return to the main house and take back everything I had given up: the Luna title, the protection, the residency rights, the medical access, and my seat in the council.

But I would not go back.

At seven in the morning, I took a taxi to the airport.

Silas had not sent a message. I tapped on his profile and deleted it.

I boarded the plane, phone in hand. A short message had just arrived: the mate bond release agreement had taken effect. It reminded me that I was no longer bound by the wrong mate and could start anew.

A sharp, hollow ache spread through my chest. The mate bond, the invisible line connecting our wolf souls, had been severed. Not a title, not a public role. It’s something deeper, something primal. My wolf stirred, whining low in my chest before settling into quiet resignation.

I pressed my forehead against the seat in front, biting my lip to swallow the pain. The plane hummed around me. Everything I had known, everything that had held me in place, had been cut away.

Then, a new message buzzed through. The screen lit up with his name.

“Calla. Where are you?”

Driving to the Vance family territory, I regretted following him.The Vance territory lay north of Blackthorn, more than three times larger than the Hale Pack. The main house’s stone walls were covered in moonlight vines, the gates inlaid with black silver. The family flag flew above, a silver wolf howling at the full moon.I had seen Alpha territories with Silas, but Kael’s main house made his look like a small outpost.Kael, acting casual, asked, “What’s wrong?”I patted my chest.“Nothing. Just overwhelmed by all this wealth.”He laughed. “Relax. Many branches are coming. Most have never been here. Just follow me. You’re my mate. No one will question that.”I believed him.I hadn’t expected to run into Silas here.Kael said only blood relatives and claimed mates of the Vance family would attend today.Silas? He came as the Alpha of Blackthorn, an ally, not a Vance.“Calla. You really came.”Silas’ smile was ingratiating. When he saw me, his eyes gleamed with satisfaction. He reached

From that day, Kael and I spent a lot of time together.Freya scolded me for moving on so quickly.“Of course,” I said. “Why would I dwell on a former mate? The bond is broken. My wolf is free.”Freya grabbed my neck in mock outrage.“Who asked about Silas?”I laughed and freed her.“Later. We have plans at the lake today.”Freya lay back on the sofa with a sigh.“The world is harsh…”But she waved goodbye with a smile. She was the one who wanted me happy most of all. Seeing me settle into a new life, she could return to Blackthorn and handle her own affairs.Kael gave her a work offer and arranged accommodations. Once Freya returned, she wouldn’t have to deal with Iris anymore. Her eyes widened.“Didn’t expect you to be a rich heir.”“Actually,” Kael corrected. “It’s my own company.”A man who had mostly stayed in the Hale territory had a business in Blackthorn and could operate beyond Silas’ influence. I was surprised, but Kael quickly changed the topic.Kael and I spent over a year

Freya immediately handed her apartment over to an agency, leaving Iris’s harassment to them. She quickly packed her things and bought a train ticket.A week later, we met at the Hale territory station.Mom’s smile widened when she saw Freya.“You came just in time to take Calla out. She’s been cooped up here so long, she’s about to grow mold.”Freya, playful as ever, agreed at once. But I underestimated her speed. In less than three days, she knew this territory better than I did, even after I had stayed here for two weeks. Somehow, she knew so many young wolves in the pack and found ways to drag me to various gatherings every day.“Anyone good for our Calla?” Freya enthusiastically introduced me. “She needs to get out of the shadow.”Someone spoke up.“Then it has to be Kael. They can heal each other, right, Kael?”Following their gaze, a man stepped out from the crowd.Even in this casual setting, his pack insignia didn’t stand out. He was from an allied territory of the Hale Pack, a

After landing, I got a new phone number. I changed all my social accounts. I only kept in touch with Freya.I returned to the Hale Pack territory. My parents were here, my pack was here, the place where I grew up was here.Mom would get annoyed every time she saw me curled up on the sofa, staring at videos on my phone and smiling like a fool.“Go outside for once. What are you doing cooped up at home every day?”“After all those wasted years with Silas, haven’t you had enough?” I teased. She pressed her forehead against mine, scolding me with her words, but placed a small plate of sliced moonfruit in my hands.I wrapped my arms around her waist and pouted.“Because I have you and Dad at home taking care of me.”“Of course I feel safe coming back. It’s because you and Dad are here.”Mom rolled her eyes, “You’re too sweet.”She had wanted me back for years. She knew how unstable my bond with Silas had been. Giving way, reclaiming, giving way again, reclaiming again. There was never an en

The phone buzzed again. The screen lit up with his name.“Calla. Where are you?”I exhaled slowly, releasing the tension in my chest. My wolf stirred, then settled, quiet but alert.“Is this about Iris?” I asked, my voice calm in a way I hadn’t thought possible.“No. I didn’t agree to become her mate,” Silas said, urgent, almost on the verge of tears.“Today we were supposed to restore the Luna position, weren’t we?” His tone wavered, hesitant, probing. In all the years with Silas, he had never spoken to me like this. He was the Alpha of the Blackthorn Pack, the most powerful wolf in the North. He had always been proud, upright, commanding. Even in the years he loved me, he would only ever reach out from above, never on equal footing. This was the first time I heard him plead, almost crying. He knew my weaknesses better than anyone. He knew what I wanted, and how to give it to me. He simply refused. When Iris was brought to Blackthorn territory, she was quiet, gentle, and her eyes alwa
