Chapter 4

Auteur: Willow Branch
A resounding slap landed hard on my face.

Samson glared at me fiercely, his eyes filled with resentment for my exposing him like that.

"You're talking absolute bullshit! You're only making a fuss because you can't bear to see me doing so well without you!"

I stumbled from the slap, and Janice immediately burst into tears in my arms.

"Mommy!"

Bernice and Eunice screamed in unison as they ran up to me and pushed Samson out of the way, hammering their tiny fists on him.

"You're a bad daddy! You can't hit Mommy! Bad Daddy!"

A fleeting look of panic and regret crossed Samson's eyes for just a second, but it was quickly replaced with deeper frustration and embarrassment.

"You're being ridiculous!"

After that, he turned on his heels, shoved Maya and Patricia out of the way, and rushed out the door.

Maya clicked her tongue at me. "Hah. You brought this on yourself."

She pursed her lips together and hooked her arm around Patricia, who was still a little stunned.

"Let's go, Mom. The vibes in this place are horrible. Don't let it get to you, or you'll fall sick. I'm sure that Sam's gone back to my place."

Patricia then glared at me, spat on the floor, and turned to leave with Maya.

After the commotion was finally over, I slowly crouched over on the ground and pulled my trembling daughters into my arms.

Just then, I received a text message notification from Fred.

"The lawsuit has been submitted to the court."

I smiled in relief, gently patting my daughters' backs as I said firmly, "It's alright, girls. Don't cry anymore. I will take you all away with me.

"We'll have a new home soon, and there'll be no more fighting or shouting or slapping. Just your mommy who loves you very much."

The next afternoon, Samson returned to the house with a rarely-seen gift box in his hands.

He unlocked the door and walked in.

The expected aroma of dinner didn't waft to his senses. He also didn't hear his daughters excitedly chattering or running up to him for hugs.

"Alexa?"

There was no response.

He frowned and changed into his indoor slippers before walking in.

The living room had been tidied up very neatly without a single speck of dust. A sudden wave of uneasiness washed over him, but it was quickly replaced by that of his usual impatience and annoyance.

He first pushed the bedroom door open and instinctively opened the wardrobe doors.

It was empty.

It wasn't just that a few articles of clothing were missing. Instead, the entire wardrobe had been emptied out.

Only a handful of his dress shirts and suits were still hung up on hangers. Even the other seasonal clothes stashed away in the corner had all disappeared.

Samson was completely taken aback.

He turned and rushed into the girls' bedroom.

Similarly, the blankets on the beds were gone, and the doodles and drawings that used to be hung all over the walls were gone, too.

A sudden wave of panic gripped him, piercing right into his chest.

He went back to the living room and realized for the first time that the house was so big and empty without anyone else there. It had never been like this in the past ten years.

It used to be filled with children's laughter, the sound of my footsteps, the pleasant aroma of food in the air, and the warm presence of people.

Even if he returned home in the dead of the night, or we gave each other the cold shoulder, at the very least, it was still a lively home. But now, it was dead.

He finally realized that I had really left him this time and taken the kids with me.

"Damn it! How dare she! She doesn't have a penny to her name. What does she think, that she and the kids will live on without me? They won't survive!

"Yeah, there's no way she actually left me! She can't afford to leave me! She's just throwing a tantrum as always!"

He kept mumbling to himself as he tried to call my number, but kept getting a busy signal instead.

The sound of bells and carolers drifted in from the streets. He slammed down the gift box in anger, striking the letter I had left him on the coffee table.

His heart jerked in his chest as he practically dashed to the table and snatched up the envelope.

There was only a single piece of paper inside, with a few cold lines written on it.

"My lawyer will be in contact with you. All matters concerning the divorce, child custody, division of marital property, and recovery of improperly disposed marital assets between you and Ms. Maya Taylors will be handled by him.

"Don't try to contact me. Regards, Alexa Cohen."

"Hey, Alex! There's a flea market in town this afternoon. Wanna come along?" Crystal asked. "Let's go find some cute and interesting trinkets for your girls!""Sure," I said, waving my mug of coffee at her.Life was like a slow and calm river, carrying my daughters and me toward a stable future together. My phone vibrated on the table just then, and it was an email from Fred. The divorce case was a success, and I was legally divorced. The joint marital property Maya had taken has now been returned to my account.Several photos were also attached to the email. They were of Samson walking out of the courthouse alone, his back slightly hunched over. He was clutching the mediation agreement in his hand as he slowly made his way toward a plain cab parked by the roadside.Neither Maya nor Patricia was with him. It was just him by himself.I heard from my friends back home that Maya had made a huge scene after he kept chasing her for the money back, and she'd even spread his scandal a

Samson had been out there having a blast, while I was struggling to make ends meet at home.He used our shared marital assets to please another woman, while I had to use my savings to cover gaps in household expenses. And yet, he'd never even noticed any of it.His phone rang again, and this time, it was from Patricia."Sam? Maya just called me crying, saying that you yelled at her. You mustn't be foolish! That Alexa is clearly a cunning woman who planned ahead of time, waiting for a chance to use against you so that she can steal half your assets for herself!""Mom," Samson said, with a helpless sigh. "Do you even know what kind of life Alexa had been living at home for the past ten years?"Every time you come over, you'd pick on her and criticize her cooking, blame her for not giving you a grandson, and always scream in her face, calling her a 'good-for-nothing' lazyass."Did you ever think that she probably never had it easy taking care of three children at home by herself wh

There was also a small line of text written in red next to it."Samson worked a lot of overtime this month, so I bought him some steak as a nice surprise. It was 30 dollars per pound. I'll just skip lunch to make up for the difference."His fingers paused for a second before he continued reading down the page."February 14th. Valentine's Day. He gave me an LV lipstick today, saying that it was recommended to him by a female colleague. It was 160 dollars. I like it, but it's too expensive. Gotta be more thrifty in next month's spending."Side note, he remembered that it was Valentine's Day, and I'm really happy that he did. I'm secretly knitting a scarf for him. Spent 25 dollars on yarn."May 12th. He spent 2,000 dollars on a gift for his mom's birthday today. We only have 500 dollars left in emergency funds this month. But Bernice's school fees need to be paid next month."Side note, Patricia called and praised Samson for being thoughtful, but never mentioned me."August 23rd. H

The outcry in the family group chat only got louder and louder, and Samson soon stopped replying altogether.I could imagine his state right now. He was probably confused and bewildered, wondering how I, who should have been completely dependent on him for survival, found the nerves to run away from him like this. Also, he was probably cracking his head open, wondering where I'd even gotten the funds that even gave me the courage to leave him in the first place.…Samson paced around anxiously in the huge, empty house. A copy of the lawsuit had been sent to him, and it was displayed on his phone screen right now.The lawsuit had phrases like "improper disposal of marital property", "gross fault", "compensation for emotional distress", and the like.He rushed into the bedroom all of a sudden and began rummaging through the drawers and cabinets. My side of the wardrobe was completely empty, with just a few lone hangers hanging on the pole. He then pulled open the drawer on my beds

The weather in the mountains was crisp, clean, and refreshing.I posted three more photos of me and my daughters on my private, close friends' stories. The first one was a photo of Bernice, Eunice, and Janice at the airport, dressed in light-blue down jackets as they huddled close to me like three little bear cubs who'd just emerged from their caves, with the huge flight information screen behind us.My caption read, "Just finished unlocking the new map."The second photo showed Bernice stumbling and falling at the ski resort, her little face flushed despite the stubborn look in her eyes. Beside her, Eunice handed her a pair of gloves, while Janice stuck out her tongue to catch a falling snowflake.Under it, I wrote, "Nothing can stop us—except for the snow. The snowflakes taste sweet here."The third photo showed the terrace of our rented cabin, with a freshly baked apple pie, a mug of hot chocolate, and an open children's book on the table. My caption read, "The scenery is for
