Chapter 3

Author: Wayne Sloane
[I agree with the comment above. How would someone like a god ever fall for an ordinary person?]

-

The fire in the forest kept spreading.

The ragdoll and I were terrified it would draw even more players, so we decided to move somewhere else to scare people.

According to the system map, there was a small wooden cabin about two miles to the east.

New players always passed through that area when they entered the dungeon, so weaker monsters were supposed to lie in wait there.

We followed the map for over an hour, but still ended up lost.

At one point, we even got startled by a group of passing players.

Their clothes and weapons were splattered with blood from recent kills. Honestly, they looked scarier than we did.

[Hahaha, since when did the monsters in this dungeon get so cowardly? They’re supposed to scare us, but we actually scared them instead.]

[This is next-level dumb. Getting lost in a dungeon is embarrassing.]

[Those poor things. They had better hide. Anyone else might let them go, but if they run into Big V, they’re dead before they know it.]

[Come on, Big V only hunts the nastiest bosses. He wouldn’t even bother with trash like that. They would scare themselves to death first.]

[Am I the only one who thinks the girl monster is kind of cute? She even braided her new hair just to run faster.]

Most of the chat was laughing at me.

Some people sounded like they couldn’t wait to see me get ripped apart by players.

I had no idea any of that was happening.

All I knew was that a much bigger problem had appeared: a player who clearly had no intention of letting the ragdoll or me walk away.

-

'Are you a player?'

He was tall and broad, built like a tank, with eyes as sharp as a hawk’s.

My hair was braided now, and aside from being a little pale, I didn’t look much different from a player.

But his mouth curved into a strange, knowing smile.

'You have beautiful eyes.'

Players had black eyes. Only monsters had gray ones.

He had already figured me out.

'I never thought an SSS dungeon would have such a pretty ghost. I wonder what you feel like under me.'

He licked his lips and stepped closer.

The chat erupted.

[This guy is gross. He will even harass monsters!]

[Honestly, most SSS dungeon monsters are hideous. Anyone would react like this after meeting a cute ghost girl.]

[She’s not getting away. I know him. He’s ranked 23rd on the leaderboard. He’s good, but he’s also famous for being a creep.]

[I don’t think I wanna watch this anymore. Ghost girl, run!]

[You’re feeling sorry for a monster now? Well, I’ve never seen people do it in a dungeon. My pants are off. Showtime!]

[You’re worse than the monsters. Keep it in your pants!]

I tried to run, but the man blocked my path in one step.

The ragdoll jumped in front of me and shouted for me to go.

Then it threw itself at him.

Its mouth split open, ready to swallow him whole.

The man sneered and whipped out a knife, slashing across its mouth and eyes in a single motion.

'With skills like that, you should be ashamed to show your face.'

Then he looked at me sinisterly.

'If you do as I say, you won’t end up like this doll. I promise I’ll be gentle with you, sweetheart.'

Some people in the chat couldn’t stand it anymore and told me to run.

I didn’t move.

The man kept walking closer, his gaze crawling over me.

'Smart move. You can’t escape anyway. Might as well make it easy for both of us.'

His hand reached out, then his expression stiffened.

He stared at the ice erupting across his arm, frost racing up his skin like living glass.

'What did you do to me?'

Someone in the chat finally recognized it.

[Isn’t that the Frost Curse? It’s a rare item you only get from killing the final boss in the Frostfall City dungeon!]

That was why Victor had been so angry. In the end, I still convinced the tree spirit to let me try. After all, this whole mess had started because of me.And since Victor already knew I had been working as a dungeon NPC, there was no point hiding anymore.SSS-level dungeons were brutal, but the rewards were just as insane.Ambitious players charged in knowing there was a good chance they would never make it back out.Every time one group was wiped out, another quickly took their place. On my way to find Victor, I crossed paths with a group of new players trying to escape. They had just wandered into one of the tree spirit's core zones. You could practically call it its armpit. They had barely escaped the crushing vines and looked half-dead when they stumbled out.The moment they realized I was a monster, they went for my throat. But when they saw that I was completely unharmed, thanks to my items, their expressions froze."A monster with items? And they're SSS items?"They

The ragdoll jumped in front of me to shield me.It swung its knife again and again, but there were too many vines. No matter how many it cut, more kept coming.I reached for my items to help it, but before I could activate anything, a thick vine wrapped around my body. The ragdoll lunged toward me, but it was too late.Layer after layer of forest closed in and dragged me away.-I was taken by the final boss of this dungeon. The boss was an ancient tree spirit; the forest itself was its body.It didn't kill me. It revealed itself only because I had burned part of its woods previously, leaving a huge scar across its land. And now, it demanded compensation. It wouldn't let me go until I replanted everything I had destroyed. Its voice was neither male nor female."Kid, that lunatic hacked his way through my forest just to chase you down. So you don't get to walk away from this. And don't worry. I brought your companion, too."The ragdoll was thrown out of the undergrowth.T

Before the man could finish speaking, his body flew backward. The ragdoll snapped its leg back from the kick as easily as if it had only swatted a fly.I stared in shock.Since when had the ragdoll become this strong? The man's face twisted in disbelief. A tiny doll had just sent him flying."I'm gonna kill you!"But before he could even recover, he was launched again. This time, he hit the ground harder. His face smashed into the dirt, blood running freely. He couldn't even stand.Just when it looked like the ragdoll was going to beat him to death, it suddenly stopped and grabbed my hand. Then it used my fingers to lift the knife he had dropped and plunged it straight into his heart. The familiar system chime echoed.[Player Franklin Hanson has been eliminated.]My balance shot up by several hundred coins. My eyes sparkled."Bunny, you're amazing! You even let me have the kill."The chat exploded.[Weren't these two supposed to be weak monsters? I left for a minute, a

The ragdoll kept one paw on the steering wheel and grabbed my hand with the other."I can do anything."I couldn't help laughing."Wow, you sound just like my cocky boyfriend."Victor acted cold and unreachable around other people, but he was clingy and shameless with me.Once we were far from the cabin, and with the ragdoll driving, I finally let myself relax.I removed the disguise item and returned to my real appearance. When I noticed the ragdoll staring at me, I scolded lightly, "What are you looking at? Eyes on the road."Hey, why are you squeezing into me all of a sudden? When did you get so clingy?"The ragdoll suddenly pulled the car over."I haven't seen you in so long. I really missed you."I assumed it meant the few hours when Victor had kept it away from me."Don't worry, Bunny. I would never leave you behind.""I don't know why Victor locked you up, but I'll deal with him for you one day."Ragdoll twitched its ears. Maybe the SSS dungeon had really frighte

Whoever did it had been merciless.People began whispering that the dungeon boss was sending a warning.I kept my head down.Victor had told me to sleep in his room the night before, but he never came back all night.I didn't tell anyone. After all, someone had just been killed, and everyone was on edge. One veteran even pulled out a rare item called the Specter Scanner, which could detect monsters. My heart nearly stopped.I might look human, but underneath, I was still a monster. If that scanner passed over me, my identity would be exposed instantly.I forced a cough and pretended to feel sick, then I rushed upstairs and hid in a bedroom.Thankfully, the scanner missed me.But I needed to find the ragdoll and get out of there as fast as possible. This place was far too dangerous. That night, a storm rolled in over the forest. Rain fell in thick sheets.Everyone was forced to stay one more night in the cabin. And that night felt even worse than the last.Victor was fa

[Trash like that should have logged out ages ago.]I knew Victor was a light sleeper, but I still didn't expect him to wake up before the sleeping mist had even worn off.Thankfully, I had prepared a backup plan.I had already used a disguise item to change my appearance and hide my gray monster eyes.Right now, I looked exactly like a player.Even my face was different. There was no way Victor could recognize me.I looked at him with forced fear."I'm not a monster. I'm a player.""A player hiding under a bed?"He raised a brow, his eyes never leaving me.Like he was studying something suspicious.Reminding myself to stay calm, I lowered my head to avoid his gaze."The person carrying me through the dungeon got eaten by a monster. I was so scared that I hid here and fell asleep.""You can still fall asleep while being scared, huh? That's impressive."He smiled faintly.I corrected myself softly, "Um, I actually passed out from fear."My heart was racing, but I didn't
