Everyone in Harbor City knew that my father maintained two households, one in the north and one in the south. My mother and I lived in Northport, while he kept his lifesaver and her daughter in Southport Years ago, Evelyn Hart took a knife meant for him during an explosion at the docks. He promised her his devotion for life. My mother fought with him over it for more than a decade. The women in their social circle mocked her for clinging to her position as Mrs. Lawson when she could not even drive his so-called lifesaver away. That changed when my mother became pregnant with my little brother. Evelyn flew into a hysterical rage over the phone and pressured my father to give her an answer. That very night, my father took my mother to the hospital and forced her to terminate the pregnancy. "Ava, we can have more children in the future, but I can’t abandon her and her daughter." The night my little brother was gone, my mother suddenly stopped crying. She simply held me and whispered. "Minnie, I’m going home." I knew that my mother was a system agent. She would survive as long as she gave my father a son and a daughter. But now, the mission had failed. The countdown above my mother’s head kept ticking down day by day. I called my father again and again, crying and begging him to come home and see my mother. However, he only snapped coldly. "Hasn’t your mother caused enough trouble after all these years? Tell her to stop using you and her life to compete for my affection." But this time, my mother truly had not been bluffing. The day the countdown reached zero, she slowly stopped breathing in my arms. I wiped away my tears and called the hospital. From that day on, I had neither a father nor a mother.

Chapter 1

"One of the family members needs to sign here. The cremation requires confirmation from an immediate relative."

The on-call doctor pushed the death certificate toward me.

I gripped the pen and wrote the name Minnie Lawson on the form.

The doctor frowned.

"Young lady, where are your parents? This is a serious matter. A legal guardian needs to handle it."

I shook my head and handed over the completed paperwork.

"That won’t be necessary. I have no other family."

Several hours later, I walked out of the crematorium with a black, square urn in my arms.

A light drizzle fell from the sky. I wrapped the urn tightly in my coat and hailed a taxi by the roadside.

By the time I returned to the hillside villa, it was completely dark.

The moment I pushed open the living room door, I saw the lights blazing inside.

Dad sat beside the dining table, while Evelyn Hart and her daughter, Winnie, sat beside him. The three of them chatted and laughed together.

They all looked up when they heard the door open.

For a moment, I was dazed into thinking that I was the outsider who had intruded.

Dad looked surprised when he saw me.

"Minnie, why are you soaking wet? Go take a shower. Then ask your mother to come downstairs and help Winnie cut her cake."

Mom died earlier that day.

Yet he had wasted no time bringing the mother and daughter from Southport over to celebrate Winnie’s birthday.

I stood in the foyer and stared coldly at them.

"Mom isn’t coming downstairs."

Dad frowned, his voice turning impatient.

"Is she still throwing a fit?"

He stopped cracking open a lobster and glanced at the urn wrapped in my old clothes.

Then he casually looked away.

"Tell her that playing the victim too often will only make people sick of her."

Winnie carefully stepped forward and placed several boxes of nutritional shakes on the coffee table.

“Minnie, my mom specially had someone buy these. They’re for Ms. York to regain her strength.

"I know Ms. York resents Mom and me, but her depression flared up this month. She only wanted to spend more time with Mr. Lawson. She didn’t mean to disturb you."

I carried the urn upstairs.

"Take those nutritional shakes away. She can’t have them."

Dad suddenly yanked off his tie.

"Minnie Lawson, she completely ruined you! Whatever happens between adults is none of your business. You have no right to give me that attitude!"

He pointed at the tightly closed door of the master bedroom upstairs.

"Evelyn is already in poor health. What’s wrong with me spending one more day with her? Did your mother really have to make such a scene and force me to come home?"

Evelyn gently tugged at his sleeve.

"Justin, don’t be angry. Ava lost her child, so it’s understandable that she’s upset."

She bit her lip, and her eyes grew slightly red.

"Why don’t I move back to Southport? Seeing me here will only upset Ava more."

Dad grabbed her wrist, his voice firm.

"This is your home too. If Ava wants to make a scene, she can stay in her room until she comes to her senses."
