Chapter 2

Author: Amber Fleck
Before I received a reply, Isaac came storming into the hospital, carrying an unconscious Candy in his arms. The moment our eyes met, he grabbed me by the collar.

"I only asked you to lend Candy your lucky charm for a couple of days, and you put yam powder on it so she'd have an allergic reaction?"

"Am I supposed to be a psychic?" I shot back. "How could I have known you were going to take it today?"

My indifferent gaze made him pause.

"Candy probably found out you'd worn it and pretended to have an allergy attack to throw a tantrum." He rubbed his temples and added, "She can be dramatic. Just let it go. Apologize to her so she doesn't make an even bigger scene and hurt herself."

With that, my phone buzzed with another transfer notification of 100 thousand dollars.

I looked at my account's transaction history. The compensation payments for apologizing to Candy were nearing a million dollars by now.

The first payment came after she found Isaac's and my marriage license in our house. She cried and accused me of leaving it out on purpose to mark my territory.

That very day, Isaac forced me to hold a press conference and publicly announce that we'd already divorced and were living separately. Then, I had to apologize for trying to drive a wedge between them.

The second payment came when Candy lost the necklace Isaac had given her as a token of his love. She insisted I had stolen it.

To calm her down, Isaac bought another identical necklace and made me pay for it. Candy reported me to the police anyway, and I spent 15 days in custody before I was released.

The third payment came after Candy nearly missed a step while walking downstairs. She immediately claimed I'd covered the staircase in wax in an attempt to kill her.

While Isaac forced me to clean the stairs and apologize, Candy kicked me down the staircase. I injured my spine and nearly became paralyzed.

Isaac casually responded, "Nothing actually happened. Don't hold a grudge against a young woman."

When Isaac saw that I wasn't moving, he grew impatient. Just as he reached for me, Dr. Lawson walked past.

"Mr. Jones, you're here? Perfect. There are a few things I need to discuss. Your wife is…"

Only then did Isaac seem to notice I was still wearing a hospital gown.

I immediately cut Dr. Lawson off. "We can talk later. We have something to deal with first."

"Grace, are you not feeling well?" Isaac pressed a hand against my forehead, then took my hand and held it against his cheek. "Or are you pretending to be sick because Candy is here so I'll pay attention to you?"

My phone vibrated in my pocket. It was probably a reply to my text message.

I had no interest in arguing with Isaac any longer. Without another word, I walked toward Candy's hospital room.

"I'm sorry for causing your allergic reaction," I said with a polite bow. Then, I turned to Isaac and asked, "Is that enough?"

Candy immediately threw herself into his arms as tears welled up in her eyes.

"Isaac, your ex-wife nearly got me killed, and all you're making her do is say sorry? If you had just told me you two still have feelings for each other, I wouldn't have humiliated myself by coming here."

Isaac glanced at me awkwardly, then signaled for his assistant to close the door.

"What are you doing, Isaac? You said all I had to do was apologize."

When I saw the large glass of mango juice in his hand, I stumbled backward in horror. I was severely allergic to mangoes. Even the smell could make it difficult for me to breathe.

"You have to suffer as much as I did for it to count as an apology!" Candy yelled from her hospital bed.

"Just do it for show. Once you're done drinking it, I'll give you an anti-allergy injection. You'll be fine," Isaac whispered. Then, he grabbed my jaw and forced the mango juice down my throat.

A fiery pain surged through my mouth and down into my chest. I collapsed to my knees in agony. Within seconds, everything went dark.

Isaac's eyelids trembled."Who the hell are you? Don't touch my wife!"After taking over his family's business, Skylar had gradually expanded its operations overseas. It wasn't surprising that Isaac had never met him.Skylar took a huge diamond ring and slipped it onto my ring finger, saying, "I'm Grace's fiance." Then, he wrapped an arm around my shoulders and guided me away.By the time Isaac recovered and ran after us, all he got was a face full of exhaust fumes. In the car, my face burned red. I quickly took the ring off."Thank you for helping me back there, but it's a little inappropriate for me to wear this ring."When I'd contacted Skylar, I was just looking for help. We hadn't seen each other in years, so I'd never dared imagine he still had feelings for me.We were just kids when we parted. From the way he'd spoken recently, I assumed he already had a partner whom he loved and intended to marry. The thought made my heart sink.Skylar laughed softly and took the ring

When I returned to that familiar house, I heard Isaac's voice before I even stepped through the gate."I'm not selling it! Are you deaf? I'm not selling it to anyone!"A property manager was thrown out the door, along with his contract."Isaac." I picked up the document and walked inside. At the sound of my voice, he spun around in disbelief. "Grace?"He rushed toward me, opening his arms to pull me into a hug. However, I stepped aside, leaving him embracing empty air."Grace, I've been looking for you this whole time. Where have you been?"His eyes were bloodshot, and his jaw was rough with stubble."Dr. Lawson told me what happened. She said you aborted our baby. I was a bastard. I didn't know you were pregnant. I already got rid of Candy. From now on, I'll stay by your side, and we'll live a good life together, alright?"He eagerly began gesturing around the house and continued, "Look here—and here. I restored everything to exactly how it used to be. I never threw away your

Grace's POVAfter the final shovelful of earth landed, I handed the man a bottle of water.Skylar Stone accepted it but didn't drink. Instead, he stood quietly beside me in front of my parents' new graves. The sunflower I'd saved had already been planted beside my mother's headstone."My family has owned this land for years. I had it prepared in advance," Skylar said. "When this sunflower produces seeds again, I'll have the gardeners collect them and replant the field."After removing his gloves, Skylar gently ruffled my hair. "By next summer at the latest, your sunflower garden will be back.""Thank you."The moment I spoke, tears spilled down my face. I hurriedly wiped them away, only for more to follow.I hadn't cried in a very long time. When Candy appeared, and the other high-society wives mocked me for having a worse life than my husband's mistress, I didn't cry. When Isaac dragged me through eight divorces and eight remarriages, and even the courthouse staff looked at

Third-person POVIsaac stood frozen in place. A loud ringing filled his ears.Dr. Lawson's lips continued moving, but he couldn't hear a single word she was saying. With trembling hands, he dialed Grace's number, but the call wouldn't connect. He immediately called his assistant instead. "After Grace came out of the river, which hospital was she taken to? Was she seriously injured?"The assistant sounded startled as he said, "Mr. Jones… We waited by the river all afternoon that day. Ms. Stewart never came back up. We were afraid something had happened, so we called a search and rescue team. "We practically searched the entire river, but we never found her… And later, when you told us to prepare the proposal venue, we stopped searching…"By then, Isaac was gripping his phone so tightly it looked ready to shatter."Search every hospital in the city! If you don't find Grace, you're all fired!"After hanging up, Isaac sped toward the house Grace's parents had left behind. If she

I stared at Candy silently, then started unbuttoning my shirt."Grace!" Isaac yelled. However, before he could say anything else, Candy's eyes reddened."Isaac, I knew you still had feelings for this old woman. You said you stayed in this city for work, but really, you stayed so you could keep sneaking around with her, didn't you? If that's the case, maybe I should just leave!"Isaac rushed to stop her. Turning his back to me, he couldn't even bring himself to look at me.Ignoring their argument, I continued unbuttoning my shirt. As my clothes fell to the ground one after another, Candy's smile grew wider, and Isaac's expression grew darker."Who said you could stand here watching? All of you, get lost!" he roared at the butler and staff. When I was down to just my underwear, Isaac suddenly grabbed my wrist, saying, "That's enough. I didn't buy that."A cold gust of wind swept over me. Clenching my teeth, I carefully dug up the last surviving sunflower and transferred it to a p

When I opened my eyes again, an IV was hooked up to my arm. Isaac sat beside the bed, gripping my fingertips. His eyes were bloodshot. The moment he saw that I was awake, he hurriedly handed me a glass of warm water. However, I shoved it away in disgust and immediately looked around for my phone."Grace, are you still having trouble breathing? I put ointment on all the hives. The itching should be gone now, right?"My phone wasn't anywhere nearby. I pulled the IV needle from the back of my hand and got up from the bed. That was when I felt something was wrong."Where am I? Don't tell me you gave my parents' house to Candy too."A flicker of guilt crossed Isaac's face as he tried to explain, "Candy never sleeps well at our place. It's quieter here and better for her recovery. I just let her stay for a little while…"My entire body began to shake. I looked around my bedroom. The vanity my father had handcrafted for me was gone, ripped apart and turned into a doghouse. The doll m
