MasukKatherine’s POV
“Luna Queen! We are under attack!”
Outside, the loud screech of grinding steel echoed through the courtyard as our men tried desperately to close the giant metal gates.
But it was already too late.
A chorus of blood-curdling howls shattered the night air. The rogues were already inside.
My mind raced, cold and sharp. I wondered why they would come here if Alexander had already given their leader gold to keep the peace.
And more importantly... how did they know that the Alpha King was not here?
Did they plan this attack from the very beginning?
It had already been two weeks since Alexander left the capital, and I was sure he had already arrived at the Southern Border by now. This wasn't a random raid.
This was a highly coordinated, two-front war. Someone on the inside had tipped them off.
I gasped in a sharp breath and commanded, “Prepare the archers! Coat every arrow with wolfsbane and fire! Burn them from the walls, and don’t let anyone get near my babies!”
I walked outside, my stride murderous and unbothered, while a massive group of royal guards, led by the Beta and Gamma, moved in a defensive formation toward the West Wing, protecting my pups and Sofia’s pup with their lives.
I took a deep, steadying breath as I stepped outside onto the grand balcony overlooking the carnage.
The courtyard was a chaotic sea of blood and shifting wolves, but my eyes locked instantly onto one figure.
I saw a man standing perfectly still in the middle of the crowd. He wasn't fighting or shifting. He was looking up at the balcony, completely calm, as if he’d been waiting for me to step out all along.
“Who the hell are you?!” I demanded.
My fangs elongated, and the bones in my hands cracked as I let my beast rise to the surface. Half of my body was already shifting into the Silver Queen as I marched directly towards him, my fur rippling under the moonlight.
He merely raised a single hand, and instantly, all of his rogues stopped fighting and dropped into a disciplined silence to listen to him.
My royal guards immediately fell into a defensive wall behind me, their weapons drawn, ready to fight the second I told them to.
“I am Darius Evander… King of the Rogues,” he said, his voice smooth and dripping with mock respect.
He bowed his head deeply, introducing himself to me like a fucking perfect noble instead of a warlord standing in a pool of my people's blood.
I took a deep, steadying breath and grabbed a heavy silver sword in one hand.
My other hand flexed at my side, the longest claws fully extended, ready to slash his neck open if he stepped even one inch forward.
Darius slowly straightened up, his eyes scanning the grand architecture of the palace before locking back onto me.
"I came here to see the great capital for myself," Darius purred, stepping casually over the body of a fallen guard. "It is truly beautiful. And remarkably unprotected. I must thank that pathetic little border Omega I caught last week. He screamed quite a bit, but before I gutted him, he was very eager to tell me the truth—that the great Alpha King had taken his army on a little journey to the South."
My grip on the silver sword tightened until my knuckles turned white.
"Your King gave me a fortune in gold to stay in the shadows and keep the peace," Darius continued, a wicked smirk playing on his lips. "But a few days ago, I received a very interesting letter from Nikolai... along with a caravan that completely doubled Alexander’s gold."
He chuckled.
"So, as you can see... there is no peace tonight. Nikolai wants the King broken, but I? I want the crown. And to lure Alexander Grey to his death..." Darius's eyes dragged slowly over my body, gleaming with dangerous, greedy intent. "...I just need to take the one thing he values most in this world."
I shook my head, my grip on the silver hilt tightening until my knuckles ached. “I will never give you what you want.”
He tilted his head, a hollow, soulless smile creeping across his face. “Really? Even when the gutters of this beautiful palace run black with your people's blood? Even when I slaughter every last child cowering behind these walls?”
Before I could answer, a piercing wail echoed from the upper floor. My heart stopped. It was the nursery.
My babies were screaming, terrified by the deafening sounds of the slaughter below. I instinctively took a step back, my eyes darting toward the balcony above.
Darius heard it too. His ears twitched, and his eyes darkened with a sick, predatory delight. He let out a slow, dramatic sigh.
“Or perhaps…” he whispered, his gaze shifting up to the nursery window. “…I should start with your pups.”
“Take one step toward my children, and I will rip your spine out through your mouth,” I snarled, sweeping my silver sword up and pointing it directly between his eyes.
He just chuckled, completely unfazed. But then, his gaze flicked past my shoulder, catching movement near the grand staircase.
His cruel smile widened into something truly monstrous.
“Well, well…” Darius crooned, his voice dripping with sadistic warmth. “Oh, Sofia! Don't tell me you've forgotten me?”
I glanced back. Sofia’s eyes were blown wide in paralyzing horror. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her as pale as a corpse.
Her knees buckled, and she collapsed against the stone pillar, her entire body trembling so violently she looked like she might shatter.
She clutched her own throat, hyperventilating, completely unable to take a single step backward. She was looking at Darius as if the devil himself had just walked out of hell.
So, this wasn't just the Rogue King. This was the rogue. The monster who had abducted her, chained her like a plaything, and nearly tortured her to death before Alexander’s men found her.
Katherine’s POV“I am not Darius,” Augustus said. “I have no desire to throw my people into a meat grinder just to feed an ego. I don't want your Alpha slaughtering my men, and I take no pleasure in spilling his.”He reached up and pulled back the collar of his heavy leather armor. Beneath the steel plates, his skin was a brutal map of old scars—deep claw marks, sword slashes, and faint silver burns crisscrossing his shoulders and chest.“I am tired of fighting,” he whispered, staring down at me with dark, hollow eyes. “I’ve been fighting every single day of my life.”I stared at the thick, faded silver lines carved into his skin, the battle rage in my chest momentarily faltering. For the first time, I didn't just see a rogue Beta—I saw a soldier who had been dragged through hell. A cold, reluctant pang of understanding settled in my chest. Maybe he wasn't lying. War took everything from a person. Endlessly tearing flesh and spilling blood wears away at your very soul, especially whe
Katherine’s POVI raised my burning hand, the roaring flames licking the ceiling of the cavern. The front line of feral rogues charged the entrance, and I braced myself, fully prepared to incinerate every single one of them. But before I could unleash the fire, the solid stone beneath our feet suddenly gave way.Sofia and I both screamed, plunging into the deep. We fell through a massive hole in the earth, hitting the lower cavern floor, and our bones cracked. My vision exploded with white stars. The impact knocked the breath from my lungs, and the fire in my palm instantly sputtered and died in the damp dirt.I groaned, my head spinning wildly as I tried to push myself up on trembling arms. Heavy boots instantly surrounded us, and torches flared to life.Standing directly over me was the Beta. He brushed the rock dust from his heavy armor, a dark, triumphant smirk on his face. He hadn't chased us into the cave entrance—he had tracked us from the upper tunnels and used his sheer, un
Katherine’s POVI always thought the hardest target on a battlefield was the king. But as I stood over Darius's shattered body, watching the shock slowly melt away from his soldiers' faces, I realized the bitter truth. Kings are actually incredibly easy to kill. It is their people who are the nightmare.Men like Darius—arrogant, cruel, claiming a crown out of ego—never truly fight their own wars. They hide behind the impenetrable wall of their own armies. They use the loyalty, the hunger, and the blind rage of their followers as a shield, just so they can sit on a stolen throne and take whatever they want.So many leaders in this world are exactly like him. They project a terrifying illusion of power, but the moment you strip away their guards, you discover the pathetic reality. The loudest kings are almost always the weakest men in the kingdom.A low, collective growl began to vibrate through the freezing mud.All around me, the paralysis finally broke. One by one, hundreds of rog
Katherine’s POVMy claws were already primed, aching to tear straight through his throat. I didn't give him a single second to call for his guards. I lunged.I didn't fully shift into my massive beast—there were too many soldiers, and I needed agility over size. Instead, I let my inner wolf violently merge with my human skin.A partial shift. My bones cracked and reinforced themselves under my skin. Long, lethal fangs dropped over my bottom lip, and my vision sharpened as my eyes flared with a silver light. My nails elongated into sharp claws, dripping with deadly intent.I crashed into him like a falling star.Darius barely managed to cross his thick, muscular forearms to block my strike. My claws dug deep into the thick leather of his armor, tearing right through to the flesh underneath. The impact of my strike sent him skidding backward through the freezing mud.He roared, his own eyes flashing with black rage. He was massive, built like a mountain, relying purely on unrefined br
Katherine’s POVI had lost count of the days by the time the carriage finally ground to a forceful halt. When the wooden doors were shoved open, I stepped out into the biting wind, the thick silver chains rattling loudly against my wrists and ankles. My eyes immediately swept over Darius’s territory, and a sickening knot tightened in my stomach. This was not the crude, muddy wasteland Sofia had cried about to the elders a few weeks ago. It was a heavily fortified stronghold. Sturdy timber watchtowers, massive stone fire pits, and long rows of forged weapon racks lined the encampment. The vast fortune in gold Alexander had paid Darius to keep the peace hadn't bought peace at all. It had funded an empire. My mate's own gold had built his enemy's fortress. But while the camp thrived, its lowest people were rotting alive.Everywhere I looked, I saw them. Slave Omegas. Their bodies were dangerously emaciated, their skin bruised and smeared with soot. They moved like terrified ghosts thr
Katherine’s POVThe smartest predator doesn't bare her fangs while the trap is being set. She plays the docile prey, hiding her strategy in the shadows, and waits to show the hunter her teeth until they are already buried in his throat.Darius shoved me and Sofia violently into the dark, cramped interior of his armored carriage. Outside, I could hear the heavy clanking of metal as his men wrapped the palace gates in thick silver chains, slathering the locks in highly toxic, burning fire-wolfsbane. Any royal guard who touched that metal would have the flesh melted right off their bones. By the time my men managed to break through the poison, our carriage would be miles deep into the dead of the night, completely out of sight. The carriage lurched forward, the wooden wheels grinding against the dirt road.Across from me, Sofia’s hands trembled. She pressed her spine into the far corner of the carriage, trying to make herself as small as possible. Her wide, terrified eyes never left Da
