Chapter 4

Author: Underwater Autumn
“I got rid of some old things I didn’t need anymore.”

Luca looked as though he wanted to ask more, but before he could, Vivian suddenly struggled to breathe and clutched her chest. He immediately went over to support her.

It wasn’t until she sat down that I noticed her arms and legs were covered in scars from cuts.

Her face was pale as she gave me a faint smile. “The past few years have been awful. I’ve been through a lot.”

It turned out that her Family had offended a powerful Mafia Family in New York, forcing her mother to take her abroad and go into hiding. They had spent their days constantly looking over their shoulders, barely able to afford decent food or clothing, while Vivian also had to fend off homeless men who harassed and groped her on the streets.

Living that way for so long had taken an increasingly heavy toll on her mental state. Eventually, she had turned to Luca for help.

“The only reason we’ve been able to find our footing in New York all these years is because of Luca’s help.”

The moment she said that, I clearly felt Luca’s body stiffen.

No wonder Vivian had managed to return to Italy at exactly the right time for our wedding. They had never actually lost contact all these years.

“When I told Luca I wanted the South District deal, he diverted Family funds and helped me secure it outright.”

“That was how my Family finally managed to recover.”

My hand froze around my glass of water. So that explained the sudden fifty-million gap that had appeared in the Romano Family’s accounts back then, as well as why the deal they had been certain to win had somehow ended up in the Marino Family’s hands.

I truly hadn’t realized just how much Luca had done for her.

“Diana, I’ve never wanted to compete with you for anything.”

“Everything that happened before was just a coincidence.”

“Why don’t we try to be friends from now on?”

Her words sounded respectful on the surface, but the smugness and provocation beneath them were impossible to hide. Luca sat beside her without saying a word, silently condoning every absurd thing she said.

In the past, I would already have been red-eyed, demanding to know what Luca meant by all of this and fighting with him over Vivian.

Now, there was no point wasting another word on either of them. I was stepping aside.

“Sure. From now on, just treat this place like your own home.”

That night, Vivian slept in the master bedroom. Luca explained that her condition was unstable and that he was worried she might have another episode during the night, so he gave her the master bedroom to keep her away from me in case she lost control.

I agreed.

Later that night, Luca wrapped his arms around me from behind as he always did. The cool scent of pine clinging to him reached me as his chest pressed against my back.

I was almost asleep when his next words brought me fully awake.

“Diana, the only reason I agreed to pretend to be Vivian’s boyfriend is because we grew up together. She’s in trouble, and helping her is the right thing to do.”

“She can barely hold her ground in her Family right now. Once she gets through this, I’ll finally be able to marry you without worrying about anything else.”

“I’ll spend the rest of my life by your side. You understand, don’t you?”

He must have noticed how distant I had been lately and assumed that a few sincere words would be enough to make me forgive him the way I always had before.

This time, I simply remained silent.

Just as I was drifting off again, Luca got out of bed and left. The crisp click of the closing door echoed through the quiet bedroom.

The next morning, I came face-to-face with him as he walked out of the master bedroom. His expression was perfectly composed.

“Vivian had an episode last night. I was afraid she might hurt herself…”

I only nodded calmly.

At breakfast, Vivian said in a sweet, coaxing tone that she wanted something Luca had cooked himself. I was about to tell her that he didn’t know how to make breakfast. Then the man who had never once stepped into our kitchen began skillfully cooking her steak and warming some milk.

“I could never get used to the food in New York, so Luca learned to cook food that suited my tastes.”

“I really envy you. You get to eat his cooking every day.”

The satisfaction in her voice was unmistakable, as though she were the woman who had been living with Luca all along.

Luca noticed where I was looking and said softly, “Once we’re married and I have the time, I’ll make breakfast for you too.”

I said nothing, because there was no future left for us. I was leaving today.

An officer brought Luca in to see me.I looked at the man standing before me, worn down and hollow-eyed, and found my emotions more complicated than I had expected.“Were you trying to kill me?”I forced the question out despite the dull ache spreading through my chest.Luca managed a strained smile. “Diana, is that really what you think of me?”“Why would you assume I wanted to kill you instead of protect you?”His words sent a shock through me, followed by a chill that spread from my heart to every part of my body.“That bastard Zane forced Vivian to pose as a figure model for him when they were in New York. Now that he can’t find her, he decided to go after you because he knows how close you are to me.”Only then did I remember meeting a strange painter during a trip to New York years ago. Looking back, Zane must have noticed me even then.“So when he found out I was here, he couldn’t get to Vivian and decided to ruin me instead.”For the first time, Luca’s calm expression cracked,

Victor’s words cleared some of the haze from my mind.I brushed him off with a joking tone. “Forget it. I’m perfectly happy on my own right now, and Luca won’t be able to bother me for long.”Victor showed little reaction, as though he had already expected that answer, and simply stayed beside me until the music festival came to an end. After I returned home, I began sorting through my luggage and decided that I would leave Mavino after a while. The house was so quiet that the only sound came from leaves rustling outside the window. As I packed, Luca’s cold, resolute expression from that afternoon suddenly flashed through my mind, and my hands slowed as I remembered what he had said when I turned away from him.“Diana, I’ll only lower myself enough to beg you to take me back once.”“If you still say no, I won’t keep chasing you. This will be the last time you ever see me.”At the time, I had assumed his pride had been wounded and that he was only saying those things to save face, so I

A flicker of irritation crossed Luca’s face, but he quickly forced it down.“Diana, why are you bringing her up? I came here for you.”His reaction surprised me for a moment. Apparently, he had come here without Vivian.“Why didn’t you bring her with you? She has bipolar disorder. What if she has an episode and hurts someone?”I wasn’t trying to provoke him. Vivian’s mental state was unstable, and if something happened while Luca was here, I had no doubt he might come back and tell me that she had hurt someone because he had been busy looking for me.That would only drag me into another round of entanglement, and I wanted nothing more to do with either of them.“What does it have to do with me if she hurts someone? Diana, I already ended things with her.”He said it without hesitation, but a chill settled in my chest. For the first time, I felt as though I were truly seeing the man in front of me for who he was.Luca didn’t love anyone because he had never understood what love was. A person really could change when their surroundings changed.Luca still crossed my mind occasionally, but my new life kept me busy enough that I rarely had time to dwell on him.Despite his young age, Victor could identify more than a thousand different plants, and every species required a different method of care. I had been away from gardening for years, so I needed to relearn everything, from the temperature each plant preferred to how much water it needed and whether it required fertilizer.I had always been competitive, and whenever I chose to do something, I wanted to do it well. These hands had been stained with blood, and I had spent most of my life moving through the shadowy side of the Family business, yet now I carried a notebook everywhere. Patience had never been one of my strengths, but I followed Victor around every day, asking him the name of every plant I saw and how it should be cared for.If any of my old friends had seen me like this, they probably would have thoug

My flight landed in Russia. The moment I stepped out of the airport, a gust of icy wind swept toward me. I pulled my coat tighter around myself, and before I had gone more than a few steps, the bodyguards my father had sent appeared behind me.A black Maybach was waiting quietly by the wide road.Alfred, our longtime driver, spotted me and immediately opened the door. After loading my luggage into the car, he turned to me.“Miss Norelli, your father and I have both been trying to call you, but we couldn’t get through.”“He was worried something might happen on the way, so he specifically sent me to pick you up.”I rubbed my temples wearily. My father hadn’t come to the airport himself.“Is my father not in Russia?”Alfred chuckled. “He isn’t.”“The head of the Family knew you needed some time away, so he arranged something for you to do while you clear your head.”Warmth stirred in my chest. After being given another chance at life, I really did need time to rest.We drove for so long

Vivian had barely eaten a few bites before saying that her head hurt.I had no appetite either, so I took my suitcase and prepared to leave for the airport. What I hadn’t expected was for Luca to come back for something just then. The moment he saw me with my luggage, he stopped short.“Are you going somewhere?”“Yeah,” I replied flatly.Maybe he was too worried about Vivian. Normally, the slightest hint of distance in my voice would have put him on alert, but this time he merely asked, “How many days will you be gone?”I was about to tell him I wasn’t coming back when his phone rang and cut me off. There were only two hours left before my flight.I had imagined this moment countless times before. I thought that when the day finally came for us to part, I would scream myself hoarse, my eyes red, unable to let him go.I never imagined I would feel this calm. After ending the call, Luca looked back at me. “What were you about to say?”I shook my head. “Nothing.”He didn’t press me any fu
