Chapter 1

Author: Anna Smith
The wedding was supposed to begin at ten that morning.

By ten forty, the groom’s place beside the altar was still empty, and my brother had not returned either.

The church was filled with guests from every major family in Chicago.

The Moretti and Russo family crests hung above the altar, symbolizing the alliance this marriage was meant to seal.

Now, every person in the church was waiting for Dante.

Grace, the wedding planner, approached me for the third time.

“Miss Moretti, would you like to keep waiting?”

I did not answer. I simply lowered my eyes to the family group chat on my phone.

Forty minutes earlier, Bianca had posted a photo.

Her white sports car was stopped at the side of the road, one of its doors badly dented.

[A black SUV hit my car and fled the scene.]

[I’m not sure whether the Falcone family was behind it.]

Dante had pulled half the security detail away from the church, and Julian had followed him with a medical kit.

Before leaving, Dante had taken my hand.

“Stay here. I’ll come back as soon as I know Bianca is safe.”

But twenty minutes ago, Caleb, the head of security, had already uncovered the truth.

A delivery van had backed into Bianca’s car. The black SUV captured on the security footage belonged to the hotel and had no connection to the Falcone family.

There had been no attack.

No one had been injured.

I called Dante.

“We know what happened now. When are you coming back?”

Bianca’s broken sobs came through the phone.

“The ceremony was supposed to start forty minutes ago,” I said.

“Give me a little longer.” Dante lowered his voice. “What happened brought back the day Bianca’s parents were killed. She still hasn’t calmed down.”

“Julian can stay with her.”

Silence fell on the other end of the line.

Then Bianca spoke through her tears.

“Dante, you should go back. I don’t want to ruin your wedding with Elena.”

“Don’t be afraid.”

Dante’s voice softened as though he were comforting a frightened child.

“I’m not leaving you alone like this.”

Only then did he speak to me again.

“Tell the priest and the guests to wait a little longer. Nothing will happen if the wedding is delayed for a few hours. Bianca is in a terrible state right now.”

My hand moved unconsciously to my lower abdomen.

A gift box tied with a silver ribbon was still sitting on the vanity in the bridal suite.

Inside were my pregnancy report, a blurry ultrasound image, and a card I had written by hand.

Happy wedding day. Soon, our family will grow by one.

I had planned to give it to Dante as a wedding present after we exchanged our vows.

Instead, he had chosen to stay with another woman, leaving both me and our unborn child waiting for him at the altar.

I asked quietly, “What about me?”

“What do you mean?”

“This is our wedding. You left me here alone. Do you think I don’t need you too?”

A trace of exasperation entered Dante’s voice.

“You’re inside the church. The Moretti and Russo families are both there to protect you.”

“Bianca’s situation is different.”

So as long as I was not physically injured or sobbing so hard that I could barely breathe, my pain would never count as an emergency.

“I understand.”

I ended the call.

This was not the first time.

On the fifth anniversary of my mother’s death, Bianca had a nightmare. Julian stayed at the estate with her while I went to the cemetery alone.

Three years ago, when I woke up after surgery, Dante had already left the hospital because Bianca claimed someone was following her.

Neither of them had ever said that I did not matter.

They simply believed that because I was the Moretti family’s biological daughter, I had the family name, the inheritance, and a place no one could ever take away from me.

Therefore, I was expected to be more understanding than Bianca.

When the priest asked whether the wedding was still going ahead, I removed my veil.

“Cancel it.”

I signed the cancellation papers, slipped off my engagement ring, and placed it beside the documents.

My phone lit up almost immediately.

[Bianca has calmed down.]

[I’ll be back at the church in twenty minutes.]

A few seconds later, Dante sent another message.

[Don’t worry. I’ll explain everything to the guests. No one will dare make fun of you.]

Even now, he still believed that public humiliation was the only reason I might be upset.

I closed our messages and opened the formal offer that had been sitting in my inbox for the past month.

A pharmaceutical research institute in London had invited me to join a ten-year drug-development project.

I had been unable to bring myself to accept because I could not bear to leave Dante or my brother.

Now I pressed Accept.

The confirmation email arrived almost immediately.

[Welcome to the institute. We look forward to your arrival in London.]

I booked a flight departing in thirty-six hours, put away my phone, and walked down the aisle alone.

Dante had chosen to stay with Bianca.

I would let him.

From now on, he would never have to come back for me.

I would not be waiting anymore.

Ten months later, the institute’s new drug project completed its first clinical evaluation phase. On the day of the presentation, I stood backstage while my assistant straightened my collar. The repaired ruby necklace rested against my collarbone. The crack was still there. The jeweler had asked whether I wanted the entire setting replaced. I had refused. Some things could be repaired, but that did not mean we had to pretend they had never been broken.Three months earlier, I had given birth to a daughter in London.Dante came to the hospital that same night after my attorney notified him.He did not bring his bodyguards into the maternity ward or demand that the doctors disclose my condition. He waited in the hallway for nine hours. Only after I gave permission did he hold our daughter for the first time.Afterward, he fulfilled every responsibility outlined in our agreement. He scheduled every visit in advance and never used our daughter as a reason to demand that I return to Chicago

While Dante remained in London, Julian returned alone to the Moretti estate.Bianca’s belongings had already been removed from Elena’s room. The wardrobe had been cleared, and Elena’s bed and desk had been brought back. But the nail holes in the walls, the missing shelves, and the scratches across the floor reminded Julian that the room would never be exactly as it had been.Several servants carried boxes out of storage.Inside were Elena’s awards, research materials, and childhood photographs. After their mother died, Julian had promised that he would always protect her.But after Bianca moved into the estate, he gradually began to take everything Elena had for granted.Because she was the family’s biological daughter, she was expected to give way to Bianca.Because no one could take the Moretti name from her, a little unfairness was not supposed to matter. Not until she decided she no longer wanted this family at all.Julian opened the family group chat. The last messages he had sent

By the time Dante arrived in London, it was already the following afternoon. His private jet had barely landed before he headed straight to the research institute, only to be stopped by security outside the lobby.“I’m sorry, but Miss Moretti has made it clear that she will not receive personal visitors without an appointment.”Dante’s expression darkened.“Tell her I came from Chicago.”“She has already been informed. Miss Moretti said she is working.”For the past ten years, Elena had always left a light on for him, no matter how late he arrived.Even after an argument, she would open the door if he appeared with a slice of chestnut cake. Now he had traveled nearly four thousand miles, yet he needed permission just to see her.Dante refused to leave. He ordered his bodyguards to wait across the street and remained outside the institute until evening. At six, Elena finally walked through the glass doors. She wore a light gray coat and carried several folders in her arms as she reviewe

Dante closed the pregnancy report and immediately turned to Caleb.“Get the jet ready.”“I’m going to London.”Bianca’s expression shifted.“Dante, Elena is pregnant. Chasing after her now will only put more stress on her.”Dante ignored her and placed the ultrasound image back inside the gift box.Julian looked at the date on the medical report.Elena had just left her prenatal appointment yesterday morning when they cornered her outside the university. They had assumed that selling her apartment, turning off her phone, and packing her belongings were all tactics meant to force them to give in.His expression suddenly turned cold.“Pull the security footage from the stairwell.”Bianca’s fingers tightened.“Julian, you don’t believe me?”“If Elena pushed you, the cameras will show it.”“There was no one else there. Elena is already gone. Why are you investigating me now?”“Get the footage,” Dante ordered.Caleb soon brought the recording to the study. On the screen, Bianca approached E

It was nearly midnight when Bianca woke up.After examining her, the doctor confirmed that she had no broken bones or head injuries, only a few minor scrapes.“She can leave whenever she’s ready.”Dante stood beside the hospital bed, staring at his phone.Elena had not responded to either of his messages.[Bianca is awake. Come to the hospital and apologize to her.][If she forgives you, the wedding can still take place in three days.]Dante called her again. An automated voice answered.“The number you have dialed is currently unavailable.”His brows drew together sharply.Julian could not reach Elena either.“She did this on purpose.”He put away his phone, his expression cold.“She thinks cutting us off will force us to go after her.”Bianca rested against the pillows, her face still pale.“Is Elena still angry?”“I really don’t blame her. Please stop being angry with her.”Dante did not answer. For some reason, he suddenly thought of the ruby necklace that had shattered on the stai

The next morning, I went to the hospital alone. While I waited for my appointment, two women nearby recognized me.“Isn’t that Dante Russo’s fiancée?”“It must just be someone who looks like her. Do you really think Dante would let his fiancée come to a prenatal appointment alone?”I lowered my head and pretended not to hear them.I had once believed he loved me that much too. That changed five years ago, when Bianca took a bullet for him during an ambush. After that, every cough and every nightmare she had became more urgent than anything involving me. I became the one expected to understand and keep giving way.The examination confirmed that I was eight weeks pregnant and that the baby’s heartbeat was steady. The doctor reviewed the precautions I needed to take on a long-haul flight and reminded me to schedule a follow-up appointment after I arrived in London. When I left the hospital, I returned to the university to collect the original copies of my research papers and the data requ
