Chapter 2

作者: Cookie
I peered out through a gap in the break room window.

At the end of the hall, two men with guns were kicking open one office door after another. "If you find anyone alive, shoot them on sight!"

They were less than 30 feet away from me.

I shoved the couch against the door, pried the steel column out of an office chair, and crouched in the corner, gripping it.

My heart was pounding out of my chest.

Without thinking, I called Leo.

He spoke in a rush before I could get a word out. "Chiara, hang on, I'm a little busy right now..."

I pulled myself together and kept my voice down. "Leo, they're inside the building. They're right outside my door. I..."

It took him a moment to answer. "Outside what door? You're home, aren't you? Then stay put. I'll come by tomorrow."

I could hear drinks being poured on his end, then the clink of glasses.

Then Lena's voice, teasing. "Leo, this cocktail is way too strong. You've gotten me drunk."

Leo sounded exasperated but fond. "My fault. I'll make you a weaker one next time."

"Not next time. Later tonight!"

Leo laughed. "What am I supposed to do with you?"

Everything I'd been about to say died in my throat.

That was when I finally understood.

After five years together, I still came second to his coworker.

"Chiara, Lena's drunk. Whatever it is, it can wait until tomorrow."

He hung up on me.

The footsteps in the hall kept coming. I tightened my grip on the steel post and edged behind the door.

The instant the handle started to turn, a shot went off outside.

Then came the dull thud of two bodies hitting the floor.

I looked through the crack in the door to make sure they were both dead. Only then did I let myself lie down on the couch.

All at once, the tension drained out of me, and I began to feel drowsy.

Half asleep, I thought about the first time Leo had mentioned Lena, three years earlier. He'd sounded so fed up with her.

He said she was his new assistant. When she first started, she got the numbers wrong on a contract and cost him five percent of the profit.

He said she'd accidentally spilled coffee on him, ruining the coat I'd given him.

For a long time, he sighed every time her name came up.

Then he took me to the company's end-of-year party, and I met her for the first time.

She was a year younger than us.

Leo walked me over, introduced me as his girlfriend, and told her, "Say hello."

She greeted me sweetly by name, just as he'd told her to.

The way he looked at her that night made me uneasy. Looking back, maybe that was when things between them started to change.

Two months later, I asked Leo to come with me to an art exhibit.

He said Lena's laptop had stopped working and he needed to fix it because all the important contracts were on it.

Three months later, a nice indoor golf center opened near his office. I asked if he wanted to go.

He said he'd already been with Lena.

After that, he started driving her home. He knew when her period was due. He remembered to tell the staff about her peanut allergy in advance.

There had been so many signs that something was wrong.

At some point I drifted off, into a long dream that left me exhausted.

When I woke up, it was light out. The shooting had stopped, and the street was noisy with people again.

I went home, took a shower, and changed.

I was coming out of the bathroom when Leo let himself in.

He looked relieved to see me. "Nothing happened to you yesterday, right?"

"No," I said calmly.

He nodded and moved in to hug me. I stepped out of the way.

I kept my voice low. "I have things to do."

He stopped me, hesitating. "Chiara, about dinner with your parents next Wednesday... could we push it back a little?"

I looked at him, my face blank. "Why?"

"Next Wednesday is the anniversary of Lena's mother's death. She's in a bad place. She wants me to go into town with her and take her mind off it."

I fought to stay calm. "This is the fourth time you've canceled on them. My parents' flights were booked ages ago."

He cut me off, impatient. "So I'm supposed to do nothing? We work together!"

But I was his girlfriend.

I didn't say it out loud.

All the tension from yesterday had left my temples throbbing. I rubbed them. "Go, then."

He brightened. "I knew you'd understand. Don't worry, next time I'll go see your parents myself."

His phone rang with a ringtone I knew all too well, and he answered right away. "Chiara said yes. Wednesday, I'm all yours."

Meanwhile, I texted my mom. "Mom, you know that arranged marriage you keep bringing up? Let's meet him next Wednesday."

Rachel rolled her eyes. "How would I know? Ask yourself."All I know is she was happily waiting for her boyfriend to pick her up, but instead she got trapped in that building and was nearly killed by those mafia soldiers!"Do you have any idea how frightened she was that night? And what were you doing?"He shook his head, muttering to himself. "That's not possible! How could she have been at the office? I sent her a message!"His hands shook as he unlocked his phone and scrolled back through their thread. At last, he found the message that had failed to send. "Chiara, something came up. Take a cab home and be careful."Beside it were a bright red alert icon and the words Not Delivered. He swayed on his feet, all the color draining from his face. The message had never gone through. So Chiara had never received it. She'd waited at the office for him to pick her up.But he had never come.Rachel watched his reaction, then went on. "Chiara took a few days off to be with her parents.

Everyone in the office froze.Turned down in front of all of them, Lena felt her face burn. She looked at him, wounded. "Why? You drove today, didn't you?"He glanced at her, impatient. "I'm picking Chiara up from work."Across from him, one of the others hesitated. "Leo, haven't you always said Chiara is independent and doesn't need you picking her up?"That stopped him. "I said that?"Everyone nodded. One of the women spoke up."I still remember Chiara's birthday last year. You stood in this office and said you were taking her out for a nice dinner, and then..."She shot Lena a look of disgust. "Lena had a low-grade fever that afternoon, and you got so worked up that you insisted on driving her to the hospital yourself. We got word that a rival family had their sights on Chiara, and we told you the second we heard. And what did you say?"You said she was from a mafia family and could handle a little thing like that. You said celebrating her birthday the next day would be just as goo

Leo sat in his office staring at his phone. Two days had gone by since Chiara had warned him to stop messaging her.He assumed Chiara was still angry and that once she cooled off she'd be the one to reach out. That was how it had gone so many times before. No matter how angry she got, she'd come around and make up with him within two days. This time, though, he felt a panic he'd never known before. In that private room, Chiara had looked at him coldly. There had been no trace of a smile, but no resentment or blame either. To her, he might as well have been a complete stranger. She used to lose her temper, cry, make a scene, and ask him over and over whether he'd stopped loving her.It irritated him a little, but part of him was quietly pleased. It meant she really loved him. He'd taken that love for granted and ignored her feelings as if he had every right to.He always chose Lena over Chiara.Whenever something happened to Lena, he left Chiara behind and rushed to her.The way he saw

After dinner, Dante drove my parents and me back to the hotel.Leo's messages didn't stop all night. He knew I wouldn't answer his calls, so he kept texting."Chiara, is this because I asked you to clear things up for Lena? I honestly didn't think you'd care this much about it. I already had her delete the post.""Or is this about her party? That was the others' idea. If it bothers you, I won't go to anything like that again.""You can be angry. Just don't talk about breaking up, all right?""You never used to... no matter how angry you got, you never brought that up."He was right. No matter how angry I got, I never brought it up.Which was why Leo was so sure he could hurt me over and over. But that was only because I couldn't bear to give up what we had.I couldn't let go of the man who'd burned his hands several times learning to cook healthy meals for me.When a rejected proposal had forced me to work all night, he'd put all his international meetings on hold to stay by my side, q

My parents were at the table with a man who had a commanding presence. It was Dante Vitale, the new Don of the Vitale family. He sat beside me and slid a glass of water with honey toward me. "Chiara, you sound a little hoarse. Have some of this."Across from us, my mother, Isabel Barone, smiled at my father. "I didn't expect Dante to be so thoughtful."My father, Marco Barone, nodded, pleased.Leo looked at us, caught off guard. "Chiara, what... what is all this? And who is he?"That was when the rest of us noticed him.My mother's smile faded, and she said nothing. My father gave him one cold glance.I couldn't blame either of them for not liking him.Two years ago, they had asked more than once to meet Leo. They were even ready to put him in charge of their North District business so the two of us would be secure after we married.By then we'd been together more than three years.Leo always agreed to meet them, then canceled at the last minute because something had come up at the off

Leo was watching the door and didn't even turn around."I forgot to tell you. Lena closed that deal she was working on, so I'm promoting her."This party is for her."You're always saying I never bring you along when I'm out with the guys, so this time I invited you."His attention was all on the other side of the room. He had no idea how upset I looked."Leo, do you remember what today is?"He gave me a blank look.I kept my voice calm. "Leo, we're done."Pop!"Congratulations to Lena on landing her first deal!"The poppers and cheers drowned out my words.Leo rushed over to Lena and pulled her into a one-armed hug.I took one look at the two of them in each other's arms, dropped my popper, and walked out of the room. There was a text from my mother, sent half an hour earlier. "Your father and I are on the plane. I'm glad you finally came around, Chiara."The man my parents wanted me to marry happened to be in the North District too. My mother said he'd already agreed to dinner on Wed
