Chapter 3

Autor: Cookie
By the time I got to the office, workmen were patching the bullet holes in the hallway.

Everyone was still rattled.

"Thank God we got out early. I heard several people died."

One of my coworkers saw me and said hello. "Chiara, your boyfriend picked you up yesterday, right?"

I smiled a little. "No. He was busy driving a coworker home."

The office went quiet. Someone asked carefully, "So you got a cab home by yourself?"

"I spent the night in the break room."

Nobody breathed for a second.

A few minutes later, one of them patted my shoulder. "It's over now."

Near the end of the day, Leo texted me. "I'm downstairs."

He hadn't picked me up from work in almost a year.

He'd promised to plenty of times, only to cancel because something had come up with Lena.

I went downstairs and saw his car.

I walked straight over. Just as I reached for the passenger door, the window rolled down, and there was Lena.

"Hi, Chiara."

Leo spoke up. "Lena says there's a great new seafood place by your office. I booked us a table. Come with us?"

I kept my face blank. "Leo, I'm allergic to seafood."

Leo blinked, and he had the grace to look embarrassed. "Sorry. I forgot."

"It doesn't matter anymore."

I didn't look at either of them again. I turned and left.

Leo and I didn't speak for three days.

Then, just as I was about to tell him it was over, he said there was something important happening on Saturday. He told me to be there on time.

That threw me.

Saturday was our fifth anniversary.

So he did remember.

He used to plan all kinds of surprises for our anniversary in advance.

He once rented out an entire harbor just to set off fireworks for me.

He spent three months making me a pink diamond necklace himself.

But starting three years ago, every anniversary got cut short.

Three years ago, Lena was sick. He said we'd have plenty of other anniversaries, and he felt sorry for her lying in the hospital all alone.

Two years ago, she said someone was following her, and he left the cake half-cut and rushed over to her.

A year ago, she got drunk at a bar. He said he was only driving her home. He didn't come back all night.

This time, I wasn't expecting anything. I just wanted to get through one entire meal and end things properly that day.

Leo told me to be there at ten. There was a little traffic, and I didn't arrive until half past ten.

I pushed open the door to the private room and heard a pop. Streamers shot into the air and fell onto my face.

The room was full of people I didn't know. They all froze when they saw me.

"Oh. It's not Lena."

"You're the one who said the footsteps sounded like her!"

"Reset everything, quick! The next one through that door has to be her."

I stood there, confused, until Leo pulled me aside and pressed a party popper into my hand. "I told you to come early. Here, hold this. When Lena walks in, twist this part."

I laughed out loud and looked at him. "What is all this?"

Rachel rolled her eyes. "How would I know? Ask yourself."All I know is she was happily waiting for her boyfriend to pick her up, but instead she got trapped in that building and was nearly killed by those mafia soldiers!"Do you have any idea how frightened she was that night? And what were you doing?"He shook his head, muttering to himself. "That's not possible! How could she have been at the office? I sent her a message!"His hands shook as he unlocked his phone and scrolled back through their thread. At last, he found the message that had failed to send. "Chiara, something came up. Take a cab home and be careful."Beside it were a bright red alert icon and the words Not Delivered. He swayed on his feet, all the color draining from his face. The message had never gone through. So Chiara had never received it. She'd waited at the office for him to pick her up.But he had never come.Rachel watched his reaction, then went on. "Chiara took a few days off to be with her parents.

Everyone in the office froze.Turned down in front of all of them, Lena felt her face burn. She looked at him, wounded. "Why? You drove today, didn't you?"He glanced at her, impatient. "I'm picking Chiara up from work."Across from him, one of the others hesitated. "Leo, haven't you always said Chiara is independent and doesn't need you picking her up?"That stopped him. "I said that?"Everyone nodded. One of the women spoke up."I still remember Chiara's birthday last year. You stood in this office and said you were taking her out for a nice dinner, and then..."She shot Lena a look of disgust. "Lena had a low-grade fever that afternoon, and you got so worked up that you insisted on driving her to the hospital yourself. We got word that a rival family had their sights on Chiara, and we told you the second we heard. And what did you say?"You said she was from a mafia family and could handle a little thing like that. You said celebrating her birthday the next day would be just as goo

Leo sat in his office staring at his phone. Two days had gone by since Chiara had warned him to stop messaging her.He assumed Chiara was still angry and that once she cooled off she'd be the one to reach out. That was how it had gone so many times before. No matter how angry she got, she'd come around and make up with him within two days. This time, though, he felt a panic he'd never known before. In that private room, Chiara had looked at him coldly. There had been no trace of a smile, but no resentment or blame either. To her, he might as well have been a complete stranger. She used to lose her temper, cry, make a scene, and ask him over and over whether he'd stopped loving her.It irritated him a little, but part of him was quietly pleased. It meant she really loved him. He'd taken that love for granted and ignored her feelings as if he had every right to.He always chose Lena over Chiara.Whenever something happened to Lena, he left Chiara behind and rushed to her.The way he saw

After dinner, Dante drove my parents and me back to the hotel.Leo's messages didn't stop all night. He knew I wouldn't answer his calls, so he kept texting."Chiara, is this because I asked you to clear things up for Lena? I honestly didn't think you'd care this much about it. I already had her delete the post.""Or is this about her party? That was the others' idea. If it bothers you, I won't go to anything like that again.""You can be angry. Just don't talk about breaking up, all right?""You never used to... no matter how angry you got, you never brought that up."He was right. No matter how angry I got, I never brought it up.Which was why Leo was so sure he could hurt me over and over. But that was only because I couldn't bear to give up what we had.I couldn't let go of the man who'd burned his hands several times learning to cook healthy meals for me.When a rejected proposal had forced me to work all night, he'd put all his international meetings on hold to stay by my side, q

My parents were at the table with a man who had a commanding presence. It was Dante Vitale, the new Don of the Vitale family. He sat beside me and slid a glass of water with honey toward me. "Chiara, you sound a little hoarse. Have some of this."Across from us, my mother, Isabel Barone, smiled at my father. "I didn't expect Dante to be so thoughtful."My father, Marco Barone, nodded, pleased.Leo looked at us, caught off guard. "Chiara, what... what is all this? And who is he?"That was when the rest of us noticed him.My mother's smile faded, and she said nothing. My father gave him one cold glance.I couldn't blame either of them for not liking him.Two years ago, they had asked more than once to meet Leo. They were even ready to put him in charge of their North District business so the two of us would be secure after we married.By then we'd been together more than three years.Leo always agreed to meet them, then canceled at the last minute because something had come up at the off

Leo was watching the door and didn't even turn around."I forgot to tell you. Lena closed that deal she was working on, so I'm promoting her."This party is for her."You're always saying I never bring you along when I'm out with the guys, so this time I invited you."His attention was all on the other side of the room. He had no idea how upset I looked."Leo, do you remember what today is?"He gave me a blank look.I kept my voice calm. "Leo, we're done."Pop!"Congratulations to Lena on landing her first deal!"The poppers and cheers drowned out my words.Leo rushed over to Lena and pulled her into a one-armed hug.I took one look at the two of them in each other's arms, dropped my popper, and walked out of the room. There was a text from my mother, sent half an hour earlier. "Your father and I are on the plane. I'm glad you finally came around, Chiara."The man my parents wanted me to marry happened to be in the North District too. My mother said he'd already agreed to dinner on Wed
