The Kitchen After Close

Virelle’s POV

The first night I baked in that kitchen, I told myself it didn’t mean anything. I just needed something to do with my hands that wasn’t doing math in a notebook or refreshing a court docket that never seemed to change fast enough to give me an answer. Baking was simple. Flour, sugar, butter, heat. Things that behaved the way they were supposed to when I did everything right.

I waited until the diner closed and Ezra had gone upstairs, and I let myself in th

Lawyers, Not Love Virelle’s POVI was in the chair outside the NICU window when the man in the gray suit found me. I didn’t see him as a threat at first. Hospitals were full of men in suits, doctors’ husbands, insurance reps, chaplains who dressed too formally for a place that smelled like antiseptic and fear. He walked with a clipboard and an envelope, and he checked a name off a list before he even looked at my face.“Virelle Hartwell?”My whole body went still.“I’m Daniel Ruiz,” he said, not unkindly, just efficient, a man doing a job he’d done a hundred times before. “I’m a process server. I need to hand you this in person and confirm you’ve received it.”“I’m not…” I started, the old instinct rising fast, the lie ready on my tongue.“Ma’am, the hospital’s already confirmed your identity through the admission paperwork. I just need you to take this.”He held out the envelope. My hands were shaking so badly it took me two tries to grab it.“You’ve been served,” he said. “Have a g

The Leak Kael’s POVVivian called at nine in the evening, which should have told me right away this wasn’t a routine update.“I need you to come to the office,” she said. “Tonight. This can’t wait until morning.”“Just tell me over the phone.”“Kael. Come to the office.”Something in her voice made my stomach drop before I even had a reason to know why. I was in a car within ten minutes. Her office lights were still on when I arrived, the building mostly dark around it, and she was waiting behind her desk with a folder open in front of her, a paralegal I didn’t recognize sitting stiffly in the corner chair like she’d rather be anywhere else.“What is it,” I said, not bothering to sit.Vivian slid the folder toward me. “My team runs routine cross-checks against hospital billing databases across the tri-state area as part of discovery. It’s standard practice in cases like this. Tonight, we got a flag.”I looked down at the paper. A name. An admission date. A hospital in Queens.Virelle

The Smallest Fight Virelle’s POVThey wheeled me down a hallway I didn’t remember agreeing to go down, my heart slamming so hard against my ribs I thought it might crack them.“Is he okay?” I kept asking, grabbing at sleeves, at rails, at anything solid. “Please, just tell me if he’s okay.”“He’s stable right now,” the nurse said, not slowing down. “His oxygen dropped for a moment during the transfer to the NICU. The team’s got him. I just need you close by.”Close by turned out to be a chair pressed against a wall of glass, looking into a room full of machines and wires and the smallest human being I had ever seen in my life, lying under a warming light with tubes taped gently across his tiny face. I put my hand flat against the glass.“Lucien,” I whispered, the name slipping out of me before I’d even decided to say it out loud, no ceremony, no perfect moment, just me standing in a hospital hallway crying so hard I could barely see him clearly. “That’s your name. Lucien. I’m not wai

Too Soon Virelle’s POVThe pain came in waves that didn’t give me time to breathe between them. Desmond drove faster than I’d ever seen anyone drive in Queens traffic, running two lights I was sure were red, one hand on the wheel and the other reaching back every few seconds to check I was still upright in the passenger seat.“We’re almost there,” he kept saying. “Almost there, Vera, hold on.”I didn’t remember much of walking into the emergency room. I remembered hands, a lot of hands, lifting me into a wheelchair, someone asking questions I couldn’t focus on long enough to answer, and then a doctor’s face close to mine, calm in a practiced way that scared me more than panic would have.“You’re thirty-one weeks,” she said. “Your labor’s progressing fast and it’s not stopping. We’re going to prepare you for delivery. I need you to try to stay as calm as you can, for you and for the baby.”“It’s too early,” I said, my voice cracking apart. “It’s too early, isn’t it, please, tell me i

Six Weeks Virelle’s POVDesmond spread the papers across his desk like he was laying out a battlefield, which, I supposed, was exactly what it was.“Six weeks,” he said. “That’s what we’re working with now. Two paths from here, and I need you to understand both of them clearly before you decide anything.”“Okay.”“Path one. You respond formally. You appear in court. That means using your real name, your real location gets entered into the record whether you want it there or not, and once that happens, there’s no putting it back. Kael knows where you are. Ravenscourt knows where you are. Every part of the life you ran from gets a straight line back to you.”I felt my stomach twist. “And path two?”“Path two, you stay hidden. You don’t respond, don’t appear, and you gamble that we can either run out the clock on their service window or that something changes before the hearing. But if we’re wrong, if they manage to serve you or convince the judge sufficient effort was made, the court

Cutting the Clock Kael’s POVMarcus Vell called again that week with nothing new to say, which was becoming a pattern I was starting to hate.“Still no confirmed location,” he said. “I’ve got a few soft leads I’m chasing, but nothing solid enough to act on yet.”“You’ve been saying that for weeks.”“These things take time, Mr. Hartwell.”I hung up before he could finish whatever practiced line came next. I’d heard enough variations of it by then to recite them myself.I sat in my office that night longer than I needed to, staring at nothing, thinking about how many weeks had passed since I found that box under the bed. How many weeks Virelle had been carrying my child somewhere I couldn’t see, couldn’t help, couldn’t even confirm was safe.I called Vivian the next morning before I’d fully decided what I was going to say.“I want to file for an expedited hearing,” I told her. “I want this moving. I can’t keep waiting on Vell to find something. I need this resolved.”There was a pause
