The words still echoed through Ethan’s mind.

The house had gone completely dark.

The security alarm screamed somewhere upstairs.

Ava grabbed Ethan’s arm.

“Lily.”

“I know.”

He turned toward the staircase.

“Marcus!”

“Where are the children?”

“Lucas and Noah are with Olivia.”

Ava's voice shook.

The screen went black.Ethan didn't move.Neither did Ava.Sophia's last words remained in the room like a threat that had acquired a voice. You can only choose one.Lily.Or the truth.Ava was the first to speak.“She thinks you're going to choose the truth.”Ethan's eyes remained fixed on the dead screen.“She doesn't know me.”Ava looked at him.“Doesn't she?”He finally turned.“What does that mean?”“She knows exactly where to hurt you.”Ethan's expression hardened.“She knows about the archive. She knows about Room Thirteen. She knows my father.”“And she knows Lily.”His face changed. That was the only thing that mattered.Ava stepped closer.“We're getting Lily.”Ethan nodded.“Then we find Sophia.”“No.”Ava frowned.“You heard her.”“I did.”“She has Lily.”“Which is why we don't do what she wants.”Ava stared at him.“She wants you to choose between your daughter and the truth.”“I know.”“Then what are you going to do?”Ethan looked toward Marcus.“Find both.”Marcus nodde

59:59.The numbers glowed on Ethan's phone. For several seconds, no one spoke.Ava stared at the photograph of Lily as if staring long enough might somehow pull her daughter out of it. The room around her—the lights, the security officers, Marcus speaking urgently into his phone—seemed to recede until there was nothing left except that small face on the screen.Lily was alive. That should have been enough to bring relief.Instead, Ava felt something colder.Someone wanted them to see her.Someone wanted them to know they were in control.Ethan took the phone from Ava before her trembling fingers could drop it.“What does it mean?” she asked. He looked at the message again.ETHAN BLACKWOOD WAS NEVER THE FATHER THEY WERE AFRAID OF.He was the child they were trying to protect.“I don't know.”Ava turned sharply.“You don't know?”His gaze lifted to hers.“No.”For the first time since she'd known him, there was no carefully constructed answer behind Ethan's expression. “Mommy!”The scream tore through the house.Ava ran.Ethan reached the bedroom first. The door flew open.Lucas was standing on the bed, clutching his blanket.Noah was beside him, crying.Lily was nowhere in sight.Ava stopped so abruptly that Ethan nearly collided with her.“Lily?”No answer.“Lily!”Ava rushed into the room. The window was open. The curtains were moving in the night air.Lucas pointed toward it with a trembling hand.“She took Lily.”Ava's face went white.“Who?”“I don't know!”Ethan crossed the room in two strides and looked outside. The window opened onto the backyard.Empty.No movement. No footsteps.Nothing.Then he noticed something on the floor.A small pink hair clip.Lily's.Ava snatched it up.“No.”Her voice broke.“No, no, no.”Ethan caught her shoulders.“Ava.”“She was right here.”“I know.”“She was sleeping.”“I know.”“They took my daughter.”Ethan looked directly into her eyes.“We're getting her back.”Ava stared at him.For one brief second, th

“I was running from your father.”Ava's words settled between them.Ethan didn't move. For several seconds, the only sound was the quiet hum of the lights overhead.Olivia stood behind Ava, watching both of them.Ethan looked at the woman he had spent five years blaming.“Why?”Ava's fingers curled against the sleeve of her nightgown.“Because he found out about the babies.”Ethan's expression hardened.“When?”“Before they were born.”“You knew he knew?”“Yes.”“And you still stayed in my house?”“I didn't know what he was planning.”“Then why didn't you tell me?”Ava laughed softly. There was no humor in it.“Tell you?”Her eyes lifted to his.“You mean the night I tried to tell you I was pregnant?”Ethan went still. The memory returned with brutal clarity.Ava standing outside his study. The trembling in her hands. The question she had asked him.Would you choose me if you had the choice? He had answered badly. He had believed she was being emotional. He had never known she was car

Ethan stared at the document until the letters blurred.Mother requested immediate release.Beneath it was Ava's signature. He knew that handwriting. He had watched her sign birthday cards, hotel documents, checks, wedding papers. He had once watched her sign his name beside hers on their marriage certificate. There was no mistaking it.Ava had signed this. But why?Why would a woman who had just given birth to triplets request the immediate release of one child? And why had she never told him?Ethan closed the file.“Marcus.”“Yes, sir?”“Send me everything.”“Everything?”“Every document from that night. Every admission record, discharge form, transfer request, physician note, security recording, payment, signature, phone call, visitor log.”He paused.“And don't leave out anything because you think it isn't important.”Marcus understood.“I'll have it within the hour.”Ethan looked again at Sophia's image on the security footage. Then at Ava's signature. Two women. Two secrets. One
