Chapter 1: The Night I Heard Him Say He Never Chose Me

Ava Blackwood had imagined the moment she would tell her husband he was going to be a father a hundred different ways.

In none of them did she imagine standing outside his study with tears burning behind her eyes, listening to him discuss the end of their marriage.

The pregnancy test trembled between her fingers.

Two pink lines.

Ava looked down at them again, as if the result might somehow change if she stared long enough.

It didn't.

She was pregnant.

For nearly ten minutes, she had sat on the edge of the bathroom counter, unable to move, her heart racing between disbelief and a happiness so fragile she was almost afraid to touch it.

Three years.

For three years, she had secretly wanted a child with Ethan.

She had never dared to say it aloud. Their marriage had never been the kind where dreams were discussed over breakfast or whispered beneath the sheets. Ethan was a private man, controlled and distant, the sort of man who could sit across from her at dinner and make her feel as though she were sharing a table with a stranger.

Still, Ava had hoped.

She had told herself that people didn't always fall in love at the beginning of a marriage. Sometimes love came quietly, after years of ordinary mornings and shared dinners, after learning the little things that made another person smile.

She had waited for that kind of love.

She had waited for Ethan.

And now there was a baby.

Their baby.

A smile had spread across her face when she first saw the second line.

For the first time in years, she had allowed herself to imagine that perhaps everything was about to change.

Maybe Ethan would finally look at her and see more than the woman who happened to wear his ring.

Maybe this child would open a door into the part of him he had always kept locked.

Maybe, when she told him tonight, he would actually smile.

Ava had even planned exactly how she would do it.

She would walk into his study, wrap her arms around his neck, and whisper the news against his ear. She could already picture his reaction: the brief shock in his eyes, followed by something warmer, something she had spent three years desperately trying to find.

She knew it was foolish.

She didn't care.

For once, she wanted to believe in something beautiful.

Ava slipped the pregnancy test carefully into her palm and stepped into the hallway.

Rain battered the tall windows of the Blackwood mansion, turning the world outside into a blur of silver and darkness. The house was unusually quiet, with only the distant ticking of the grandfather clock breaking the silence.

Ethan's study was at the end of the corridor.

A thin line of warm light spilled from beneath the closed door.

Ava took a breath and walked toward it.

She had almost reached the handle when a man's voice stopped her.

“And what about Ava?”

Ava froze.

It was Richard Blackwood.

Ethan's father.

She glanced at the door.

She hadn't known Richard was here tonight.

Before she could decide whether to knock, she heard him speak again.

“Are you finally going to end this marriage?”

The smile disappeared from Ava's face.

Her fingers tightened around the pregnancy test.

She knew she shouldn't listen.

This was a private conversation. Whatever they were discussing, she had no right to stand outside the door and hear it.

But something about Richard's question made her feet refuse to move.

There was silence inside.

Ava waited.

Then Ethan answered.

“I only married her because I had no other choice.”

The hallway seemed to tilt beneath her.

Ava stared at the closed door.

For a moment, she wasn't sure she had heard correctly.

Her grip on the pregnancy test loosened.

Then tightened again.

No.

Ethan couldn't have said that.

She swallowed, forcing herself to breathe.

Perhaps there was something she hadn't heard. Perhaps she had misunderstood the conversation. There had to be another explanation.

Three years ago, she had married Ethan because she believed they were building a life together.

She had never expected him to be wildly romantic. Ethan had never been that man.

But she had believed the quiet things mattered.

The dinners.

The birthdays.

The nights she waited awake until he came home.

The mornings when she prepared his coffee exactly the way he liked it.

The times she remembered which meetings mattered to him and which business trips he hated.

She had learned him piece by piece.

Had none of it mattered?

Richard's voice broke through her thoughts.

“The Lancaster family has waited long enough. Sophia has always been the appropriate choice for you, Ethan. You know that.”

Ava's heart clenched.

Sophia.

The name was enough to make an old insecurity rise from wherever she had buried it.

Sophia Lancaster was everything Ava wasn't.

Beautiful, sophisticated, accomplished, born into a family powerful enough to open doors that remained permanently closed to ordinary people.

Years ago, everyone in their social circle had assumed Sophia would become Ethan's wife.

Even Ava had heard the rumors.

She had never asked Ethan about them.

She had been too afraid of the answer.

“I'm not marrying Sophia,” Ethan said.

Ava's heart gave one painful, hopeful beat.

For one foolish second, relief flooded through her.

Then Richard laughed softly.

“You don't have to marry her. But you cannot continue pretending that Ava is part of your future.”

The hope vanished.

Ava pressed her shoulder against the wall.

Her stomach twisted.

Inside the study, Richard continued.

“You married her because of the agreement. The Blackwood family needed the Reed connection, and Ava was convenient. You fulfilled your obligation. The situation has changed. There is no reason to keep pretending.”

Convenient.

The word struck deeper than any insult could have.

Ava lowered her eyes to the pregnancy test in her hand.

Two pink lines.

Their baby.

Only moments ago, she had thought this child might be the beginning of a family.

Now she wondered whether Ethan would see the baby as another obligation.

Would he look at her pregnancy and feel trapped?

Would he resent the child because it tied him to a woman he had never wanted?

Ava's throat tightened.

She waited for Ethan to deny it.

He didn't.

The silence stretched between the two men.

“Ethan,” Richard said, his voice harder now. “You've given her three years. That's more than enough.”

Ava closed her eyes.

She hated herself for listening.

More than that, she hated herself for still hoping.

Three years.

She had spent three years convincing herself that Ethan's silence didn't mean rejection.

When he came home late, she told herself he was busy.

When he forgot their anniversary, she told herself he wasn't good with dates.

When he avoided conversations about their future, she told herself he simply needed time.

When people asked whether they were happy, she smiled and said they were.

She had protected the marriage with excuses because admitting the truth would have meant admitting that she had been fighting for something Ethan had never fought for.

Then Ethan spoke.

“I don't owe Ava a lifetime just because I signed a marriage certificate.”

Ava's eyes filled with tears.

She stared at the floor.

One tear slipped down her cheek.

Then another.

She wiped them away quickly.

She wouldn't cry for him.

Not anymore.

Richard's voice was calm now, almost satisfied.

“Then end it.”

Silence.

Ava stopped breathing.

This was the moment.

She knew it.

Some stubborn, humiliating part of her still believed Ethan would say something that would change everything.

He could tell his father that he loved her.

He could say that their marriage had become real.

He could say that Sophia was part of his past and Ava was his future.

He could say anything.

She waited.

Finally, Ethan spoke.

“I'll handle Ava.”

Four words.

That was all he gave her.

Ava felt something inside her collapse.

She stepped away from the study door.

She couldn't listen anymore.

If she stayed, she knew there would come a point when she would hear something she could never forget.

She walked away without making a sound.

The pregnancy test remained hidden in her palm as she made her way toward the staircase.

She reached the first step and stopped.

For a brief moment, she looked back.

The study door remained closed.

Three years ago, she had entered that room as Ethan's hopeful new wife, believing she had been given the chance to build a life with the man she loved.

Tonight, she walked away knowing something she should have understood long ago.

She had been married.

But she had never been chosen.

Ava returned to the bedroom and closed the door behind her.

The click of the lock sounded strangely final.

She stood there for several seconds, staring at the room she had once considered hers.

Their bedroom.

That was what she had always called it.

But now the words sounded ridiculous.

There was nothing of her in the enormous room except the belongings she had accumulated over three years and the memories she suddenly wished she could erase.

Ava walked to the dresser and placed the pregnancy test on its polished surface.

The two pink lines seemed almost cruel beneath the soft lamp light.

She sat slowly on the edge of the bed.

Her hands drifted to her stomach.

There was nothing there yet that she could feel.

No movement.

No tiny heartbeat beneath her palm.

Still, the gesture came naturally.

“Our baby,” she whispered.

Her voice broke.

She lowered her head.

“I thought he'd be happy.”

The confession came out so quietly that it barely sounded like her.

She had imagined Ethan's reaction so many times.

She had imagined him staring at the test in disbelief before pulling her into his arms.

She had imagined his hand resting against her stomach.

She had imagined him laughing for once.

She had imagined the two of them choosing a name.

A nursery.

A family.

A future.

Ava shut her eyes.

How pathetic.

For three years, she had been waiting for a man who had apparently been waiting for an opportunity to leave.

She had mistaken his tolerance for affection.

She had mistaken his presence for devotion.

She had mistaken a marriage certificate for a promise.

Ava wiped her cheeks and stood.

If Ethan wanted freedom, she would give it to him.

She crossed the room and opened the closet.

A suitcase sat on the top shelf.

She pulled it down.

Her hands were still shaking when she opened it.

She didn't know where she would go.

She didn't know how she would support herself once she left the Blackwood mansion.

She didn't know what tomorrow would look like.

But she knew she couldn't spend another night pretending she hadn't heard what she had heard.

Ava began packing.

A dress.

A pair of shoes.

A few sweaters.

Her passport.

Some personal documents.

She moved mechanically, refusing to think too far ahead.

When she opened the drawer beside the bed, she saw the diamond bracelet Ethan had given her on their second anniversary.

Her fingers paused above it.

She remembered that night.

She had been so happy.

Ethan had placed the box in front of her without ceremony.

“It suits you,” he'd said.

She had smiled for an entire week because those three words had felt like affection.

Now she understood how little it had taken to make her happy.

Ava closed the drawer.

She wouldn't take the bracelet.

She wouldn't take the expensive gifts.

She wouldn't take anything that could make Ethan believe she was leaving because she wanted money.

She wanted only one thing.

Her dignity.

She returned to the dresser and picked up the pregnancy test.

Her thumb brushed over the plastic.

“You didn't do anything wrong,” she whispered.

Her eyes burned again.

“This isn't your fault.”

She took a slow breath.

“If he doesn't want me, that's okay.”

The words hurt so much that she nearly couldn't finish them.

“I'll love you enough for both of us.”

Ava placed the pregnancy test beside the suitcase.

Then she looked around the room one last time.

Three years.

Three years of waiting for Ethan to turn toward her.

Three years of believing tomorrow might be different.

She had spent so much time wondering what she needed to do to make him love her that she had forgotten to ask the more important question.

What did she deserve?

Ava reached for the suitcase.

Then she heard footsteps.

Her entire body stiffened.

The footsteps stopped outside the bedroom.

Her heart began pounding.

The door handle slowly turned.

Ava stared at it.

The door opened.

Ethan stepped inside.

He was still wearing the black suit he'd worn to dinner, his tie loosened slightly at the collar. His expression was calm, almost indifferent, until his eyes landed on the suitcase.

His gaze moved to Ava.

“What are you doing?”

Ava couldn't answer.

She had rehearsed a hundred things she might say if Ethan came looking for her.

None of them survived the sight of him standing there.

He took another step into the room.

His eyes moved past her.

Then he saw the pregnancy test.

He stopped.

For the first time since Ava had known him, Ethan's carefully controlled expression cracked.

His eyes fixed on the two pink lines.

“Ava…”

She held her breath.

Ethan walked toward the dresser and picked up the test.

His fingers tightened around it.

He looked at it once.

Then again, as though his mind refused to accept what his eyes were telling him.

When he finally looked back at her, the coldness was gone from his face.

There was shock in his eyes.

Something else, too.

Something Ava couldn't identify.

His voice came out lower than before.

“You're pregnant?”

Ava stared at the man she had loved for three years.

For the first time that night, she realized she didn't know what his reaction meant.

Was he shocked because he was happy?

Or because the woman he had just decided to leave was carrying his child?

She swallowed the ache in her throat.

Then she looked at the suitcase beside her.

“Yes,” she whispered.

Ethan's grip tightened around the pregnancy test.

And for the first time in three years, Ava saw genuine fear in her husband's eyes.
